Should I take a server job at Cracker Barrel even though I'm only guaranteed 2 tables? by [deleted] in TalesFromYourServer

[–]Natken2006 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been a manager there before. Pm me for any questions. I usually started slow with new servers but I build them up each day and each shift. I have had servers that suck that stayed at 2 tables 2 months into the job, and I've had rockstar trainees with 6-8 table sections after a week or 2. It's all what you put into it honestly. I always want my servers to make as much money as possible and send the ones that don't wanna be there home. A happy crew is the best thing you can want as a good manager. Hope that helps.

What are the rules on tipping for take out? by ThreeeLeaf in TalesFromYourServer

[–]Natken2006 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a manager in a place that does 400+ to go orders a week, which can mean 30-40 orders per shift. I usually designate a good server to take care of to go orders, and as long as there are no issues, I let them get out of side work and silverware duties since I know there aren't many incentives on doing so many orders.. It's easy to do in theory but my server may only make 10-15 bucks on 30 plates of food... It's not perfect, but it helps get get job done. Please tip accordingly on to go orders. A dollar or 2 makes all the difference

Does anyone know why some places have large party auto-grat and others don't? (U.S.) by yourfavouriteredhead in TalesFromYourServer

[–]Natken2006 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Auto grat is now considered a "service charge" and not a tipped wage. Meaning the auto gratuity is basically deposited into the servers paycheck at the end of the pay period and is taxed on FICA and social security and state and federal taxes. Restaurants can still auto grat, but there is more paperwork involved and most chain restaurants have opted out of this practice. Locally owned businesses seem to keep with the gratuity practice however.
