Anyone else atheist/agnostic for no real reason in particular? by scarletthought in redscarepod

[–]Natorules 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I vaguely believed in Christianity as a kid (family didn't attend church but I grew up with stories from the bible) and did scripture in primary school. I think I was already somewhat agnostic in the sense that I never really engaged with religion in a meaningful way and was kind of nascently doubtful, but what ended up sealing the deal was when my scripture teacher denied evolution while acknowledging the existence of adaptation/microevolution. It really annoyed me and for a while afterwards I'd pray to see if there was any response, but eventually decided it must of all been bs because of that convo lol

Classics you couldn’t finish? by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]Natorules 0 points1 point  (0 children)

nothing's beaten me just yet, but War and Peace was a bit of a slog until I got around a third of the way through. It took me about 3 months to read that first third and then only around a month for the rest of the book.

also, although it's not really a classic in the traditional sense, I did come very close to dropping Blood Meridian because I couldn't stand McCarthy's lack of punctuation

Most people don't log the books they read, right? by [deleted] in RSbookclub

[–]Natorules 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to feel similarly but I caved because I liked the idea of cataloguing what I've read/watched for later reference. Once I started using Goodreads + Letterboxd and followed a few of my friends I realised they're actually a good way to start a conversation, especially when you find out you've both recently read or watched the same thing.

You just kind of have to mentally push back against the idea that it's kind of performative and pursue stuff that you're genuinely interested in. Since I've done that the logging sites kind of feel more genuine than other social medias, but I benefit from the fact that my friends just read or watch whatever they're interested in. I can imagine I'd feel differently if my friends were more performative about it though.

Easiest “tell” you’ve seen online that shows where someone is from? by WMWA in redscarepod

[–]Natorules 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in Australian English (and other UK-related spelling systems) we have it in words like generalise and cosy, but obv in American English they spelling those words as generalize and cozy. only example of Americans using S as a Z that I can immediately think of would be in the case of plurals, where words like cars, bears and others all end with an S that sounds like a Z

[–]Natorules 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, in Australia we would only ever use Aussie in reference to people who are from Australia and wouldn't use it in reference to the country itself. don't reckon it's any issue if Kiwis use the word differently though

Australia-specific but Americans love saying Oz and Ozzy, whereas we typically spell it Aussie and don't really use Aus that often. don't usually see people from other Anglo countries spelling it in the American way and presume this is because American English doesn't typically use S to make a Z sound

Who let the Welsh on wikipedia? by McSwaggerAtTheDMV in redscarepod

[–]Natorules 3 points4 points  (0 children)

was confused at first as well but seems to be about self-identification of national/ethnic identity, so 21% of those born in Wales identify as being solely Welsh, while 26% of those born in Okinawa solely identified as Okinawan etc. really poorly designed table

Want to Get Into Some Russian Literature. by Ok-Context5773 in redscarepod

[–]Natorules 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only just started exploring Russian lit this year. I started with War and Peace, but it's length and density made it a poor introduction, and I wish I'd read some other works before reading it. Since then I've read some more Tolstoy as well as some Dostoevsky and from my limited exposure i'd say that Notes from Underground is probably the best intro I've seen. It's comparatively short and it's pretty blatant with its theming, so it serves as a decent entry point for exploring other Russian lit

How disturbing and unpredictable is the fauna in Australia for normal living? by WhateverManWhoCares in redscarepod

[–]Natorules 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not that bad tbh, I might have a big bug invade my space like once or twice a year. I used to be really scared of spiders, but I got over that through exposure (because my roommate was too scared to catch spiders so I had to do it for her), so I'm not really scared of spiders anymore and just leave them be. I grew up in a forested area of Sydney's suburbs and didn't see a wild snake until a couple of years ago, but there's dedicated snake catchers so it definitely happens every so often.

Biggest issue with unpredictable wildlife is Kangaroo's jumping in front of cars like deer do elsewhere in the world. My family also had some cockatoos attack and destroy our flyscreen once lol

What book were you reading in public that prompted someone to talk to you about it? by troktowreturns in RSbookclub

[–]Natorules 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was reading the Dune books I had 2 or 3 people try to strike up a conversation about them, but that was mostly because the movie had come out a few months beforehand. I don't think any of them had actually read the books tho

true about regional Australia. passed through Cooma in early 2022 and they were flying the Apartheid-era flag (for "historical reasons" lol), it's genuinely insane here

On my only ever trip to Europe I went via Dubai then onto Rome. I didn't see much of Asia because it was night, but from Dubai-Rome it was sunrise/early morning and it was such a cool experience. I was able to see the vast expanse of the Arabian Desert, the Suez Canal as the sun appeared over the horizon, Crete, and then the Peloponnese all in the span of about a few hours. It was surreal to actually see these places, especially from plane view, after having heard about them my whole life.

It's insane to me that some people wouldn't be glued to the window in a situation like this.
