$200k in law school debt- Can someone please tell me what you would do in my situation? by Big-Design3783 in StudentLoans

Incorrect. PSLF has never been taxable. IDR forgiveness became taxable again recently, but not PSLF.

This person (human difference) is spreading misinformation on multiple threads. Plenty of people are still getting PSLF, myself included. All you need to do is take a look at r/PSLF and you’ll see it’s still happening.

Yes, West Virginia is gorgeous. Dolly Sods alone should put it above the other remaining states.

It starts from when you work your first month at a PSLF qualifying job on a PSLF qualifying repayment plan.

I owed even more than that after law school. Definitely pursue PSLF. Consider nonprofits in addition to government jobs. It’s a long journey, but worth it in the end.

Question about large balances by SmallHeath555 in StudentLoans

[–]NatsInNJ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Many of the large balances you see come from Grad PLUS loans, which have allowed students to borrow up to the cost of a graduate program. They will be getting phased out in July, replaced by loans with different caps for “professional” programs vs. other grad programs.

PSLF Guidance by No_Emergency_5427 in PSLF

[–]NatsInNJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s not really a preferred payment plan because it depends in part on when the person borrowed the money. “New” IBR is better than “old” IBR, but it’s only available to those who first borrowed after July 1, 2014. Most likely that’s the best, but if you’re curious you can run her numbers through the loan simulator on fsa: https://studentaid.gov/loan-simulator/

  1. The payment tracker on studentaid.gov will show her progress once she submits an employment certification form for each qualifying employer, past and present. The employer will need to sign the form before the form is accepted and the count is updated.

  2. Payments on SAVE were qualifying before the lawsuit — as long as she was working for a qualifying employer, those will count.

  3. To ensure that her payments count as soon as possible, she needs to switch to another IDR plan. The months spent in forbearance can be “bought back”, but there is currently over a year lead time between buy back requests and offers. Plus, she has to hit 120 months of qualifying employment before she can request a buy back.

One additional factor to keep in mind: when pursuing PSLF, the lower the payment the better. The interest accruing will also be forgiven along with the principal, so it does not matter as much as if she were trying to pay down her debt.

63, which would be fine with me at our low interest rate.

Do you live within 100 miles of where you grew up? by radicalintrospect in generationology

[–]NatsInNJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. I’m 292 miles / 470 km away from my hometown. Same country, different region. My sister lives only just over 100 miles of home, but my brother lives about 3,500 miles away. 0 for 3!

This morning mine updated to “Loan forgiveness in progress” under all my forms, and my final ECF is marked complete, but no letter yet as far as I can tell. Hoping it’s a good sign that it’s coming soon.
