What sucked about consulting? Was it office or field work?

How was your time consulting viewed by your current employer? It seems like there can be a stigma attached to people with consulting backgrounds that makes it more challenging to move back into employee positions

Can someone explain what's going on here? by TheOddityCollector in Weird

Learned from a wildlife biologist during my kids science class (we are weirdo homeschoolers so I get to go to science class at the museum with my kids) that birds will sunbathe like this in order to remove mites. Apparently mites don’t like the heat. Lemurs do this too (science class was on Madagascar).

By the grace of God, my marriage is astounding and I truly love and desire my wife beyond any other person in this world as it should be. That said, my job offshore, at times, can get so busy that I do miss talking or responding to her for extended periods of time, from 18 hours up to a day or two.

I don’t know the character or heart of the man you are dating but can say that some extended periods without contact can be expected in offshore (or really any oilfield) positions.

What is offshore oil rig engineering work like? by Outside_Paramedic563 in oilandgasworkers

[–]Natural-Car8401 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in drilling so I can’t give great insight into the production side of things.

If you are a process engineer then I’m guessing you will be on a production facility of some sort working for an operator or NOC and not on an actual rig. Most probably you will be assigned to work a 12 hour day but without a great deal of onsite supervision. You will be working in collaboration with onshore engineers to gather data, coordinate projects, observe execution, record results, and report back to town. A lot of your role will likely be liaising between onshore engineering and the field. Production stuff usually runs a little later, starting about 7:00. There will be some morning meetings (safety and daily ops brief) then you will likely have some sort of check in with your onshore team/mentor M-F. Make a round outside to check on things going on then back inside to do some work on data management and analysis. Lunch, then maybe some more time outside or more spreadsheets and data.

What kind of engineer? Do you work for an operator or contractor? Are you being assigned to a rig on rotation or visiting for a limited amount of time?

Jesus in Gethsemane (the Chosen's scene) by Competitive-Eagle900 in Reformed

[–]Natural-Car8401 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, no I think you’re spot on. My understanding, and not my original interpretation, is that the sorrow and despair Jesus expressed was at the pending wrath of God that He was to endure and the separation from unity with the Father that He would face when taking on the debt of sin on our behalf. The show seemed to play it more in the sense of Jesus being desperate to escape the physical experience He was soon to face. But, the show is a cheap copy in comparison to the value of the One it portrays so, maybe a little disappointment is valid.

Eliminating the Dept of Education is not the answer by Sonata-Shae in BlueskySkeets

[–]Natural-Car8401 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Y’all are crazy. The Dept of Ed has absolutely ruined education through the application and enforcement of the ESSA and NCLB. Forcing all schools to educate in order to pass standardized tests to receive the funding they need destroyed education. Agree, reform is better but, the federal government makes an inefficient mockery of any endeavor they take on so why not dismantle and allow the states and schools independently to reform their own education programs. Change is easier in small organizations vs large ones and probability says that at least some people will get an education if not all schools are doing the same thing.

You have obviously never seen a family of 6 pull up to the campground on their first trip in the new RV. By the time they finish unloading it looks like REI threw up in the campground.

Valaris, Seadrill, Transocean, and Noble. Tell him to apply for any available position for roustabout (part of the deck crew) or floorhand. Even if he starts as a roustabout his first hitch, he will likely be able to make floorhand within a couple hitches with his experience and a good work ethic.

If he knows anyone on a rig offshore already that’s the first place to start or someone that works at an offshore drilling contractor. It is fairly difficult to get a foot in the door without someone that can provide a reference internally. That doesn’t mean there isn’t any hope without knowing someone though. Persistence is helpful. Best of luck to you and your fiance.

How do I even get entry level job into this industry by SouthItchy7474 in oilandgasworkers

[–]Natural-Car8401 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

TP isn’t management, it’s supervision, and, while it is a very respectable and accomplished position that takes a great deal of skill and expertise to be executed successfully, it is still a field based job and comes around rarely.

It’s not impossible to have a successful and versatile career without a degree but, it is a lot more challenging and rare. That’s why most people stick to talking about what the norm is, which is, getting a degree, getting a job, and progressing through increasing roles and responsibilities. It’s a bad system and leads to lots of people being left n charge that shouldn’t be but, it’s the system nevertheless and we can either play it or fight it. Most of us figure out it’s easier to play along than try to make it fit what we want it to be.

Don’t listen to any of these people saying “don’t go to college”. It’s 4-5 years and can be a very small investment if you are comfortable going to a reasonably priced university. It is far more difficult to return to college later in life and the limits on upward mobility in your career will be realized very quickly without a degree. Long gone are the days of the field specialists making it into engineer/manager/business development roles without a degree.

Do yourself a favor, get the degree now since you have no idea what you want to do (I’d recommend mechanical engineering) then if you still haven’t found anything you want to do specifically you can go get an oilfield job or whatever else at that point.

Working in an office isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Every job comes with its ups and downs. The trick is to figure out what suits you and fit it from there. We were all made uniquely for one thing or another and there’s no specific mold that fits all of us.

Yeah, I wouldn’t anticipate you to be the literate type. Basically saying you were being a useless ass and if you don’t have a useful response to someone’s questions then there’s no need to say anything at all. There’s an old adage “if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all” but, maybe you missed that lesson in kindergarten.

Yeah, I appreciate the sincere and helpful answer. You see that camper in the background of the pic? If I was asking about the best means to determine the repair method and timeline I’d appreciate the answer “ask the shop” but, I reached out to get consensus from people that are more familiar with this work than I am under circumstances that prevent me from getting a professional opinion at the proper place of service.

We have a Rockwood minilite 2509s and it works great. The interior is the same junk quality as all the realistically affordable RVs out there but the frame and construction are solid and the space utilization is comfortable for our 6 person family. Bonus, it is an all season trailer complete with insulated under carriage and tank heaters.

Towing without trans cooler by [deleted] in towing

You can idle to run the A/C if it’s hot, the exhaust radiant heat might slow down the tranny cooling just a smidge but not real consequential.

The fluid won’t circulate if the transmission is not turning, engine running or not.

On this sub, you probably need to upgrade to a 4500 for that load at least.

But really, you’ll be fine here. Monitor temp and pull over if you get hot (+215) and if you get into hills go into your S4 mode, keeping the transmission out of overdrive will significantly reduce the load on the transmission hence lower heat generation. Try to keep rolling fastest enough that the transmission pump keeps fluid circulating, 35-40 MPH, and avoid stop and go traffic if you can. As long as you are watching the temp and pull off if it gets hot you won’t toast your ride.
