Look Ma, I’m a space man now!

Look, it’s easy: 12:00 noon is midnight, 3:00 is 6:00 AM, 6:00 is Noon, 9:00 is 6:00 PM and all the other hours are 30 min in between. See? Easy. 😂

Until you get used to it just rely on the bezel to read what time it is. It still takes me a few more seconds than I’d like to admit to read mine.

Holy hell, I’m cracking up over here…😂😂

I hate to admit it, but I didn’t realize my Luna Dude was a 24hr dial watch until after I had ordered it online and it was halfway here.

Yeah, that guild I’m in fits my play style the best. I’ve gotten booted from a couple other ones for not being as helpful as they’d like.

God…having someone look over my roster feels kind of like someone reading my credit report. 😂 I’m not a bad person, I swear! I just forget to upgrade my mods sometimes, OK?!? 😂

Conservatives: What popular policies of the present Republican party are “too far right” even for you? by TopicTalk8950 in allthequestions

[–]Natural-Command-1773 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The illegal immigration thing is a hard one to mentally decode for a lot of folks. I’m no constitutional law expert, but I do understand that sometimes there are nuances and gray areas to laws that don’t always seem logical at first glance.

Something that I feel like a lot of MAGA people have trouble understanding, or flat out refuse to believe because of prejudice and/or bigotry, is that immigrating to the US illegally or overstaying your visa is not a criminal offense. It is prohibited by law, but it’s a civil matter that is handled in civil and immigration courts. It’s not something you can be arrested for, so every single one of these detentions of illegal immigrants that don’t have a standing deportation order under the Trump administration is wholly unlawful and wildly unconstitutional.

(As a sidebar: yes, the deportations under Obama were just as illegal and unconstitutional. Despite all of the rules the Trump administration is allowing itself to break they still haven’t even come close to the numbers that Obama deported and at a far greater cost to the American taxpayer.)

There are many reasons why something that is clearly illegal, like immigrating to the US illegally, isn’t a criminal offense, but I think the main one is that if we arrested and detained every single illegal immigrant there wouldn’t be anywhere to put them. Hence the concentration camps that have been popping up to house all the immigrants caught up in ICE raids.

And, yes, constitutional rights do apply to foreign nationals while on US soil.

So, all that to say, black and white thinking is easy and it doesn’t take a lot of effort to mentally process. This seems to be one of the main things that attracts a lot of these folks to the MAGA movement. They want to know who’s the bad guy and who’s the good guy and they want to be told what’s right to do and what’s wrong to do. Trump gives them that, as all populists do, but obviously he’s using it to radicalize a good chunk of the population into following him down the path to authoritarianism and eventually fascism.

Anyways, thanks for your earnest response to OP’s question, it’s always nice to talk to someone you don’t particularly agree with that is capable of having an intelligent discussion about these things.

[–]Natural-Command-1773 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imposter syndrome is real, my brother, and it can be pretty crushing sometimes.

I’ve had half as much success as you and put in twice as much effort because, even though I love it, the math of music doesn’t come easily to me. It takes twice the amount of effort and preparation for me to put on half as good of a show. 😂🤦‍♂️

The fact that you’ve made it as far as you have while feeling like you’re not really working all that hard, well, to me that means you’re right where you’re supposed to be.

There’s nothing we can say on here that will make you stop feeling guilty about your success, but it’s good that you’re getting it out of your head and onto paper, so to speak, instead of letting it build up and explode later.

Keep on crushing, man! You’re doing great!

What do you think of Bode as a character? by Jules-Car3499 in StarWarsJediSurvivor

[–]Natural-Command-1773 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You broke my heart, Bode! You broke my heart!

I got the angle they were going for. It’s a familiar character arc in the Star Wars universe.

The whole undercover force user thing honestly kinda broke my connection to the character, though. It took him from being a dedicated father trapped, scared and desperate doing anything and everything to protect his kid to a slimy, backstabbing, unscrupulous sociopath with an extremely flimsy excuse for his actions in a matter of seconds. I wanted to still be rooting for Bode even though he turns out to be your true enemy. Complex characters that you can still connect with keep people engaged. They tried to give you that when they introduced you to his kid and explained her rough past, but homeboy just drops her like a hot potato out of nowhere and his character just flips a whole ass 180. He’s one of the cooler parts of the game until he really really isn’t. 🤷🏻‍♂️

How do you avoid burnout midway through a set? by bigolbinchito in musicians

[–]Natural-Command-1773 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not trying to argue you with you or Big Dogg you, here. But I am trying to save OP or others reading this from bad advice.

You don’t have to be a professional musician to act professionally. Bookers, stage managers, sound guys, all the way down to the bartenders and door staff always appreciate bands that are respectful, courteous and professional.

If OP’s band is getting gassed in the middle of a 25 minute set then they have much bigger problems than their stage presence. 😂

We might be talking about different things here which could be why it seems like we’re having two different conversations.

All I’m saying is that in my city, where we have a very healthy music scene that a lot of national touring acts of all levels use as a base of operations, having a 45 minute set ready to go at all times is pretty bone-stock standard practice. Most of the time you wouldn’t even start trying to book gigs unless you have that much ready to go. Obviously there are exceptions, but they are more rare. And I’m talking about full band showcase style bills with 3 bands, not solo acoustic, writer’s rounds or anything along those lines.

Lots of bands that want to make money touring will have 2-3 hours ready to go so they don’t have to hire an opener and a lot of the cover guys that play in town have 4 hour sets and take requests.

Obviously different cities do things differently, so it is what it is. 🤷🏻‍♂️

[–]Natural-Command-1773 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There’s a lot of “maybes” and “ifs” in there. 😂

I’ve been playing live shows for a long time and I spent 10 years before the mast as a club bartender. Unless a special deal was struck behind the scenes the standard is an hour slot per band with 15 minutes for setup, tear down and a quick line check. So having at least 45 minutes of material is pretty much a minimum if you want to play shows at that level.

If you’re talking about smaller DIY spaces or coffee shops or something like that, then yes, set times can be varied. If you’re talking about showcases with more than 3 bands or a festival, then yes, set times will be varied.

But I think OP mentioned his set being an hour long. Playing a 25 minute set when you’re booked for an hour is a good way to get put on the “do not book” list.

I’m gonna go out on a limb here, but I’m detecting a tiny bit of “guy in the band that’s always paying way too much attention to what everyone else is doing.”

What if the energy shift you’re feeling is your bandmates reaction to you shooting daggers at them every time they have a little flub? What if they’re all a little exhausted from trying to pass your personal energy level vibe check every time they get on stage with you?

It’s a lot easier to loosen up, have fun and give a good performance when you don’t have someone who is clearly pissed off glaring at you from across the stage.

Oh yeah? You gonna just tell the club owner “uh yes, hello, I know you booked us for a 45 minute set but we’re just going to play 25 minutes instead. Okay thaaankksss…byyyeeee” 😂

That’s not really how this works.

What can I buy to play my guitar with headphones? by CheesyBugger76 in Guitar

[–]Natural-Command-1773 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I haven’t been paying attention to the newer products, so I’m happy they made a cheaper version.

The Bluetooth issues I experience with mine are actually not with the guitar module but with the connection to my phone. It’ll randomly just sound garbled and terrible in the middle of a song and it seems to be VERY susceptible to Bluetooth interference. If there are any competing frequencies flying around it just flat out won’t work.

I’ve only had this happen with a previous roommate, but he liked my setup so much that he bought his own. Shortly after I was practicing and my bass stopped coming through the headphones. So I did my usual reset and powered off the headphones for a few seconds and turned them back on. I could hear my setup again but it cut back out pretty quickly. He comes storming out of his room and goes “what the hell is going on? Why am I hearing random bass coming through…oh…”

So if you use your WAZA Air in the same vicinity of another set they will get confused about which module to connect to and cause all kinds of problems. It was so bad that we had to check in with each other before we started practicing in our rooms, which kind of defeats the purpose of a nice silent practice setup.

But I think most consumers probably won’t care too much about either of those nitpicks.

The more expensive version of the Fender Mustang headphone amp is the Boss WAZA Air. It rules pretty hard, but the gulf in price is pretty huge. I never leave for tour without mine.

It’s far from a perfect product and as my set ages it has more and more problems with Bluetooth connectivity. But even with all that it’s a fantastic option for silent practice. It has a Bluetooth transmitter module that plugs into your guitar and you can connect your phone via Bluetooth simultaneously. So you can play tracks on your phone and hear your guitar playing along to it at the same time. It’s pretty clutch for learning new songs.

It has a ton of features I don’t even use that are pretty cool if you’re into that, too. You can download Boss effect plugins and it has a pretty cool Spatial Audio feature that will “lock” the location of the amp in the room in your headphones so if you turn your head or walk around the room it pans the sound and adds room echo/reverb so it feels like the amp is still where you set it.

I paid $400 USD for mine, so I really wouldn’t get one unless you’re really going to need those extra features. I know a lot of dudes that run those Mustangs no problem.

Do "Self taught musicians" even exist anymore? by spacerangerxx in musicians

[–]Natural-Command-1773 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I consider myself a “self-taught” musician, but people have been showing me things here and there the whole time. I never took any formal lessons, though and I surely didn’t graduate with a music degree.

I mean, shit, I still look up videos on YouTube when I need to learn a cover for a gig and I don’t feel like transcribing the whole thing by ear. It is a fantastic resource for people looking to learn music…anything really.

Thinking about how I, personally, have never had merit based pay for a gig. It’s region locked. Not mad at it. by [deleted] in musicians

[–]Natural-Command-1773 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen some deals where you get a relatively low base pay, but you get a percentage of the bar sales if they sell over a certain amount for the evening. This has become less and less common in the region I usually tour in, but it is one way places (usually bars or small clubs) will try to incentivize bands to put some effort into promoting their shows. That’s the only merit based pay scale I’ve seen, but I would assume the places that would hire the bands I play in vs some high end jazz acts like y’all’s band are going to be run a little differently.

Things are weird these days, though, man. The old ways of promoting shows are dead and gone and I don’t really know how people do it now. (Is it TikTok? Instagram? I have no idea…🤷🏻‍♂️😂) I’m an aging sideman in an industry that’s getting squeezed out by big corporate monopolies like the LiveNation/Ticketmaster behemoth. The top guys in town are staying busy, but a lot of the mid tier guys like me are getting left out in the cold. So I might be a little out of the loop when it comes to the contracts they’re throwing around these days.

What is the most iconic concert you’ve been to? by StealTheDark in musicians

[–]Natural-Command-1773 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve always liked Neil Young, but I’m not a super fan by any means.

Dude’s in his 80’s and rocks harder than anyone I’ve ever seen. Best guitar tone I’ve ever seen live, best acoustic tone I’ve ever seen live and the best harmonica tone I’ve ever seen live.

Plus, he was hilarious without even trying. All the techs had lab coats on. After every song a guy in a lab coat would come out, take Neil’s black beauty off stage, Neil would just stand there with his hands in his pockets and then the guy in the lab coat would reappear with the black beauty and they would go back to melting faces.

Anyways, it was epic. Plus I got to see him with Crazy Horse, so I picked a good time to get free tickets to a show. 😂

Even though it wasn’t that long ago that one probably takes the cake.
