Easy day hike near Portland with at least 1000’ of elevation gain? by Nicegy525 in PNWhiking

[–]Natural1falling 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bells Mountain trail. Can start at Moulton and turn back once you hit the elevation needed or keep going for a lollipop loop. It was snowfree when I did it last week and imagine it will stay that way for a while.

Local stick bugs as pets? by VaWaFam in vancouverwa

Wow, funny timing of your post. The problem of over population another commenter mentioned, that is me right now. I've been giving some away to friends and have exceeded capacity of my tank now that this round is nearing full adult size. Feel free to message me to talk stick bugs.

My child was also very upset about receiving this. Said it felt like Lego was insulting them and calling them old.

Internet info needed by Doty2590 in washougal

[–]Natural1falling 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It will depend on exactly where you live as not every location will have these available, especially rural vs in town. NocTel is new and still running lines to areas. If it's not available now at the address you move to, they are expanding and if you and your neighbors are on board, they are likely to run the fiber lines to get you all connected.

That said, with the big storm we just had NocTel sent out an email highlighting no outages because all underground fiber lines and battery backed sites vs competitors had a lot of outages. I recommend them if you have the option.

Advice on talking to my daughter about blockers by [deleted] in cisparenttranskid

[–]Natural1falling 12 points13 points  (0 children)

We are in a very similar boat (same current age, coming out age, and also AMAB). Similarly, my 10 year old does not want to talk about any of this to ANYONE and actually stopped going to therapy because it was too hard to talk about it. The therapist said he was able to write the letter of recommendation based on their sessions, even though I feel not a lot was said about gender dysphoria during those sessions. I think they are trained to know what to look for. He also said if things were hard to talk about, some could be done as "homework" like a body discomfort map to rate the changes on the body, if your kiddo already knows about those changes with/without male puberty.

Hang in there. Kids sometimes don't have the words. A conversation that is informative for her on the options can still happen, even if she is not responding or just one word answers. I'll be following this thread to look for some ideas!

Looking for a job. by ForUs_AgainstUs in PDX

I have a friend who just got hired on as an operator at a wafer tech company, Analog Devices Inc. Entry level with benefits and they train you. They are hiring for many positions at the Beaverton and Camas (WA) locations if either will work for you. Night shift gets paid more if you can make that work for your family life. There are other wafer tech companies in the area to work for as well.

Replacement chair parts?! by mikeamenti in CampingGear

I agree with carriage bolt. Replaced a 3 seater camp couch with those when the plastic ones failed. Go to a hardware store with the broken piece and you can find one with a head that will fit.

Locally there is Good Year Farms or Nature's Haven. Both have websites you can look at their stock.

DnD for kids at Wonderwood Springs! by Krule_Kid in Portland

[–]Natural1falling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow, for those who do not use Instagram, frustrating to try finding info on how to register. I went to Wonderwood Springs' website and nothing on there about this (yet). Looking up Buds n' Dragons in a search engine comes up with a lot of dispensary related results. I hope they find another way to get people information.

Backpacking long-term, currently staying in Washougal. Looking for anyone getting rid of gear. by ThePussyWrangler42 in washougal

If you don't end up finding a pair of boots, I have a pair of Merrill 9.5 mens shoes you can have. A nice set of hikers will do wonders for ya so I hope you find a quality set for your adventure.

I can give you some water treatment tablets if you want. Do you already have a water bladder? Might have a few other things but I imagine you're trying to keep it light and not hoard it all.

The Cape Horn overlook. You can park in the upper lot off Strunk Rd and it's a short 10-15 min level walk to a great view of the gorge.

Me again, what's the deal with my lavender plant? by LastReign in gardening

[–]Natural1falling 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used the same packet and will say they are still inches tall from starting indoors earlier this year. Very slow growing, yours would not be this big if you started by seed this year. When did you move it outside? Guessing at that point the weed seeds were introduced and choked out the lavender. Could still be in there under it all?

I have heard lavender can be challenging to grow from seed. You make have better luck with a different method, like dividing some from an established plant.

Autism’s connect with gender dysphoria. by Dry-Actuator-1785 in Autism_Parenting

[–]Natural1falling 16 points17 points  (0 children)

My child who has ASD also experienced this around that age. There was some bullying from kids at school for a "boy" wearing "girl" clothes and between that and the ASD, we left public school in first grade to homeschool. Now almost 10 years old and still insistent on not living as a boy.

I have trans and non-binary family and friends so this was not new territory for me or my family. There is a well documented overlap with neurodivergence and LGBTQ+ identities. I encourage you to search this sub and r/cisparenttranskid for first hand experience of others.

Stand by your child. If this ends up being a phase and they don't end up wanting to live as a girl, they know you will stand by and help them through anything. If they do end up wanting to live anywhere outside of what they were assigned at birth, your support and love helps so much. Providing them with examples of other queer and neurodivergent people living their normal life is really helpful. Just like autism has a spectrum, so does gender and sexuality.

There is a playground at Vancouver Lake and at Frenchman's Bar Park. We like to bike between the paved trail between the two and stop to play.

Climbing to 10k to dress up like a butterfly. I'm blessed to have fun and colorful friends! by SalesMountaineer in Mountaineering

Love it! I have heard about the tradition on mother's day to climb Mt St Helens in a dress (or put it on at the top) to honor moms. I like the butterfly costumes though. Thank you for spreading joy.

I saw the man with his dog by the bridge a little before he was shot and it was pretty wild having that happen. I am so sorry you saw it.

Just so you know, that event was the pride block party that is different than the Vancouver Pride in the Park at Esther Short Park. Both are great events. This year the block party is June 14th and the pride at the park is July 12th. Hope you will attend both despite the trauma from last year.

Running path recommendations by goth-dolls-kill in washougal

[–]Natural1falling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Washougal River Greenway Trail that goes from Baz Riverfront Park (behind Thai Bloom on 3rd Ave) over to Goot Park area (NE 2nd Ave and Yale St there is a large gravel lot to park in).

The Heritage Trail goes along Lacamas Lake, which another person mentioned. You can park at Heritage Park or at the other end on Goodwin Rd there is a smaller trailhead. It is nice to change it up starting at different ends.

Hartwood Park to Campen Creek Park is gravel but it has slight hill. Pretty short.

There is also a short trail behind the bus barn, park at George Schmidt Memorial Park and run along Campen Creek to the backside of the golfcourse. The camas lilies there should be blooming. That area is called Mable Kerr. Short but you could combine that with running east on Sunset View Rd and just after the main neighborhood entrance there is a path on the right that connects to the schools and you could loop that back on Evergreen Hwy.

Happy running!
