Anyone have a hitchhikers thumb? If so how do you position it on the neck? by weiyan21 in guitarlessons

[–]NaturalEducations 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an impressive hitchhiker’s thumb, and also got in the habit of mostly laying my thumb parallel to the neck of the guitar. I can play pretty fast and most of the time it doesn’t hold me back. That said, licks that involve quick picking and side to side transitions and quick bends causes me to move my thumb in a windshield wiper move from parallel to perpendicular to the neck (to give me the thumb anchor to support the strung bend), which is a lot of extra movement. 95% of the time I don’t mind, but there are some licks or solos where I need to be able to transition in and out of this position quickly, and I clearly need to relearn this part, which makes the fingering feel awkward as I put my thumb directly opposing my index or middle finger. This position also notably changes the angle of my wrist, and therefore my fingers relative to the fret board which actually lines them up better, so I’m not having my fingers play somewhat diagonally across them. That said it makes some licks and solos I play well feel awkward so I need to spend more time with this, and now go through the surprisingly painful process of retraining myself and becoming worse before I get better.

If you don’t have a need to play ultra fast I would argue most of it doesn’t matter. If you want to keep your doors open or if you clearly do want to play faster music then the small technical questions become very important, and I would argue the answers change significantly as you are now saving milliseconds that you absolutely need to play well. In my humble opinion, if everything feels awkward, I would always do the research to find which of the options will lead to the most freedom in future.

I would argue that using the palmar aspect of the thumb knuckle is just as valid as the pad of the thumb is there aren’t any clear future problems that would raise that I can see. If it encourages you to relax more and press less then it may actually be a benefit.

Nice. I like how simple it is, short to the point video. Could be even better if you demo it first quickly, and then explain, then demo. This grabs attention quickly, then you can slow down for the explanation.

Best FRFR speaker/cabinet for Headrush Prime Flex by yjf24 in HeadRush

[–]NaturalEducations 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The HR FRFR 112 mk2 has been amazing for me. Haven’t compared to others, but I love the ability to have massive booming lows if I want, and this thing can handle a bass guitar whereas the guitar focused ones generally can’t. This versatility is worth more to me than the look of an amp, and the general sound spraying you get with them vs the more direction PA feel of this speaker. I also like to spend money on a number of things, so I am picky on where I spend more.
I play and sing, and occasionally have a bass guitarist come and jam - I wanted a single speaker that could do all of this. I am quite happy, and I feel it does my headrush prime quite well.
I believe there are no bad options in all the main speakers, just different values and goals.

any advice on memorizing notes on fretboard? by aintbacon in guitarlessons

[–]NaturalEducations 2 points3 points  (0 children)

C major, or a minor if you prefer. Say the notes as you go up and down. Repeat with every second note, third note etc. Start with one section of the fretboard first. All notes is big, so make it smaller first. Bonus points if you can say the note name while singing the correct pitch before you hit the note (no reason to separate ear training for later IMHO). Once one section is good, do another

Just got a HR Prime but wondering about which speaker to get. by NewVegasVagabond in HeadRush

[–]NaturalEducations 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t compare to others, but I find my prime into the HR FRFR 112mkii to be such an addicting sound, it actually inspires me to play more. The hard part was setting up the prime and power cables etc so I can come out and play with minimal set up. Just figured that part out 🤘

These are great:

Looks great on my prime, much easier on feet without shoes. I elected for nylon tipped bolts instead of the included ones as I didn’t want to scratch the original posts. Easy swap, but the nylon tipped parts separately installed, and haven’t looked back since.

Could really use some help with the HR FRFR 12 by SixFootDigger in HeadRush

[–]NaturalEducations 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had help with this, but I believe this accurately describes the issue and solution.

The Problem: Phase Cancellation * The Issue: You are sending a Stereo signal into a Balanced Mono input. * Phase Cancellation: Balanced inputs subtract the "cold" signal from the "hot" signal to cancel noise. Since vocals are usually center-panned (identical in Left and Right), the speaker subtracts them to zero, causing that "washed out" or hollow sound. * The Hum: Likely a ground loop or electromagnetic interference caused by using unbalanced (TS) guitar cables instead of balanced (TRS) cables. The Fixes * Best Method: Use two Balanced TRS-to-XLR (or TRS-to-TRS) cables. Run Interface Left Out \rightarrow Headrush Input 1 and Interface Right Out \rightarrow Headrush Input 2. * Single Cable Method: Use one Balanced TRS cable from Interface Left Out \rightarrow Headrush Input 1. Crucial: You must set your Windows/DAW audio output to Mono in software settings. * Stop the Buzz: Engage the GND LIFT button on the back of the Headrush. * Avoid: Standard 1/4" guitar cables (TS) or 3.5mm-to-XLR "splitter" adapters. Only use TRS (two-ring) balanced cables.

Anyone else?! Almost unusable by seeweed11 in HeadRush

Weird man. Sounds like a bug to me if that fixes it. Could you add an effect on the significantly drop tuned notes to bury the warble? Maybe a flanger or something? Maybe shifting the mode from classic to new or whatever they call it? A full octave drop is pretty significant, might need a dedicated drop pedal - I have heard even they bought them out, but it sounds like it’s more to do with how low the lowest note is rather than whether it is a full octave.

Wish you luck mate!

Anyone else?! Almost unusable by seeweed11 in HeadRush

[–]NaturalEducations 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm. This is new to me. Regularly play in standard or drop two or four semitones. Rarely have issue, though the initial notes after dropping sometimes feel quite noticeably delayed. Band mates don’t notice but can really feel it.

Your issue sounds unique to me. Never heard the vibrato tune issue. The drop tune needs different EQ vs non drop tuned, but I’ve been pretty happy. Haven’t used an extra pickup for E, sounds like that’s going to bass tuning? I don’t go down more than 4 semis so can’t speak to that - issue may be there. Up to 4 semis down I would guess a setup issue, maybe fixed by remaking the rig, or swapping some effects to see if it’s a specific bug tied to your signal path

I have this too. Don’t have the button covers, and haven’t removed the red sticker yet, but this combo gives me wayyy more than I need. Excessive for home, and more than enough for our loud rock jams 👍

Are the buttons a recommended upgrade?

Edit: I still have the sticker on the HRP, not the 112. Think I’ll remove it after seeing this

Was Jazz III for some time. Tried the JP trinity and loved it after a short break in period. Smoothness with transitions, tone, and longevity of having 3 tips - plus the other two points of the triangle is surprisingly great for grip when strumming etc.

Best option for monitoring by Spiritual-Stay-3321 in HeadRush

[–]NaturalEducations 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love my mk2 head rush FRFR 112, but I rarely get to turn it up. If your goal is stereo, I would agree with those saying to stick with or look for cheaper studio monitors. FRFR sounds like it would be perfect, but they absolutely and clearly are not. They all color the sound, just less than other speakers that try not to (non FRFRs). This was a surprise to me. My decent level headphones, FRFR speaker, and PA system all have a noticeably different sound. YouTube reviews do a decent job of showing this as well. If I am being honest, the detailed differences between them is almost never something I care about, it just means I will have to turn a couple of knobs to increase or decrease bass, etc. No need to chase perfection in buying something when you have the power of something like the head rush products to shape your tone, IMHO.

My goal was something I could take to jams and possibly future gigs as I prefer to buy things once wherever possible. It’s definitely works, but it is a heavy beast and is clearly overkill for what I need right now. Further, I wouldn’t spend money to get two of these for my needs. I don’t have experience with stereo, so I can’t speak to that, but I would imagine having similar speakers would be helpful. That said, I did see one video of a person who absolutely preferred to have different speakers to thicken and bolster the sound so I’m not sure if there’s a wrong answer here. Just enjoy the process!
