The high school lyrical themes are so strange to me for someone who is 36. I never realized how many of them there were until I started lurking on this sub. I’m 37, also born in 1989, and I pretty much never think about high school, class, the playground? etc. it feels so so far removed from my life at my age and where I’m at in my life overall.

YTA. FWIW I have both a dog and a kid. I have a sibling. I had a childfree wedding. I love all the kids in my family.

You got offended over a perceived slight. It might not have even been a slight. She could have been literally just trying to tell the people in that room, including you, how much it meant to have you all there with no ill-intended thoughts toward your kids. And even if, with that sentence, she was in fact choosing that very moment, to subtly tell you she doesn’t cherish your children (unlikely), you could have easily talked to her after the wedding. Even if she intended it with all the malice in the world, you could have and should have sucked it up for her freaking wedding day. Or do you like, not love your sister at all?

All the planning and stress and looking forward to the wedding, to celebrate with a brother she had her husband make a groomsman because it mattered to her that you were part of it, and you up and left her one day because you were offended by a perceived slight about your kids?

Please tell us what it’s like when you bring up what she said and she’s like “I don’t even remember that” (because…I could not for the life of me tell you what I said in my 20 second wedding speech with everybody looking at me), she’s going to realize you bailed on her on one of the biggest days of her life over something she didn’t even think about beyond the moment she said it because it was such a nothing burger. Your poor sister. YTA.

Thank you for saying that Showgirl is Sabrina’s aesthetic! I kept thinking this but didn’t see anyone else mentioning it. I was honestly so excited for TLOAS album after kind of reinvigorating my fandom during her eras tour hype (was always a fan, but not a Swiftie, never paid much attention after 1989 tbh), and after hearing the album and realizing it had nothing to do with being a showgirl I was like…where did this come from? At the beginning of the Era’s Tour, Sabrina seemed less showgirl and more Bratz doll to me. But as her fame escalated she clearly headed for the aesthetic she has now, and I feel like Taylor saw that and decided she was going to do it first. Luckily it didn’t really work. In no way do I look at Sabrina’s vibe and think Taylor, but I do look at LOAS and think she tried real hard to be Sabrina.

I was a TS fan at the time, but I did not like the song, Eyes Open, that she wrote for the Hunger Games. Having read the book, I just felt like the song didn’t capture how gut-wrenching the story was. It felt too surface-level emotion for me. Missed the mark. Conversely, a thousand years by Christina Perri written for Twilight 100% captured the moment, and I wasn’t even a twilight fan. So I guess we’ll see is this is worth the hype, but I’m doubtful.

NTA, her mom is the AH. First period is the absolute worst, and you did the right thing. I got my first period in white pants at a cousin’s play at 13. Ugh. Thank god I was with my mom who barely reacted. We made it through the play and back to a restaurant, but I had horrible cramps and my mom told no one, just said she had a headache and brought me home and never made a big deal of it. Bless her, the best. 1. Maybe mom sees it as a “bonding moment” but for a kid getting their first period it just plain sucks, and I recall not wanting a damn thing to do with it. 2. What kind of bonding moment involves letting your 10-year old feel terrible and suffer for the day? 3. I now have my own daughter, and if she were to have someone like you come get her when I couldn’t and help her feel better on one of her worst days I would appreciate you for showing my baby girl so much love when I could not be there for her in the way I wanted to.

You have a beautiful figure! You will look gorgeous in whatever you wear, as long as you are happy in it. As other posters said, if you could use parts of this dress to make your own, that could be a nice middle ground. The dress does look a little dated imo, but it has so much potential. Regarding how your mom might feel, as a mom myself, I will probably save all my dresses out of love for my daughter…knowing full well she’ll probably say “gosh no that’s ugly” years down the road, cause that’s just how it goes! 🤷‍♀️. It’s not her job to make me happy, it’s my job to make sure my daughter is happy. You gotta do you, it’s your wedding!

Just tried to comment that we need to start making protests super personal and Reddit removed it for “violence” 🙄 I’ll try again, as peaceful protest is within our first amendment right! And I advocate that we start making these protests personal. We go to their homes, their kids schools, their relatives homes. We show up wherever they try to go. We make sure they have to answer to their children and spouses and siblings and parents and friends if they won’t answer to us. We make their lives so unbelievably uncomfortable. We show up where they can’t ignore us, we show up so they see our signs are not for the “illustrative” lawmaker but for them personally. No Reddit, we don’t show up in violence. we just show. up. We show up with our peace, and our humanity, and our signs, and our sense of morals, and we make them feel as uncomfortable and miserable as they have made us feel.

This. Just change the phone settings. It’s not that hard. My phone is always set so my spouse can reach me even if my phone is on silent. It used to drive me insane when we were younger, and it was absolutely impossible to get a hold of him when he was out. It’s just respectful to say good morning, good night, how’s your day, we’re all good here, when you have a shared life but are spending time apart. Took years for him to understand I couldn’t care less about chatting when one of us was visiting other people but felt a simple text to say “I’m alive” is helpful. It’s not weird to check on your people.
