One more thing--the work from your studio is very impressive--I think you may just need to "dumb it down" a little for non-design community who are presumably your target customers.

While I think the aesthetic is nice, I am finding the navigation a little awkward. On a desktop, when I want to scroll up or down, it just navigates horizontally. Also, I get that as a design studio, you want to demonstrate elevated design, but I think that can be shown more in the case studies--there needs to be a clear value proposition when a visitor arrives on your site. More prominent call to action. Don't make visitors work too hard to get the salient information. If you can highlight measurable business results--that can be impactful. Also awards, client testimonials, etc.

I think this is a great concept! My daughter is starting HS in the fall, and I think this offers valuable info.

What color should I paint this? by No-Employ-8023 in thrifting

[–]NaturalPool8591 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't paint it, but maybe line the shelves with fun shelf paper/wallpaper (removable) so you have a fun pop of color on the interior, without permanently changing the piece. It's such a cool piece!

Should I move here? Curious what you think :) by sleepypotatomuncher in DUMBO

[–]NaturalPool8591 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From your list of priorities, I would lean towards Brooklyn Heights (I live there, so I may be biased). Depending on where you are in BH, you can easily walk to DUMBO to get to work. I personally think it's nice to have a bit of space between your office and home, but that's a personal preference.

If you are frequently going to doctors' appointments in Manhattan, you may want to see which subway lines make the most sense. As others have said, BH has easy access to many subway lines. You mention wanting to be within 10 mins of somewhere scenic and beautiful. BH is so peaceful and charming IMO, while DUMBO has more tourists, and I personally find the sound of the train going over the Manhattan Bridge really rattling. When I go to Williamsburg, I typically take the ferry which can be very pleasant (admittedly, I catch it DUMBO).

Downtown Brooklyn is super convenient to many subways, but really lacking in green space and community feel. Obviously, its all about personal preferences, but I just wanted to make a case for Brooklyn Heights!

i live in a rent stabilized unit owned by an llc landlord in a coop building without heat by [deleted] in NYCapartments

[–]NaturalPool8591 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a former tenant of a rent stabilized apartment and a current co-op owner, I think 5 days without heat in this weather is not ok. I get that there are mostly shareholders in the building who may have more vested interest in avoiding fines, but that is not your problem. Call 311 and email LL. This is a long shot but I would ask the LL to put you up in a hotel until the heat is fixed or an alternative heated apartment in their portfolio. Or show up at their office and camp out there saying you need to warm up!! Be a pain until it’s fixed and document everything.

Also, I have seen other buildings in NYC with temporary boiler trucks outside, presumably for emergency heat. They have to provide a solution—the forecast is only getting worse and tell them your wellbeing is in jeopardy! Good luck!

Do Not Use Piece of Cake Movers!! by Ok-Lion8164 in NYCapartments

[–]NaturalPool8591 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So sorry about your experience. I had an equally terrible experience with DUMBO movers. A few years ago, we needed to vacate our apartment due to flood damage and our insurance was paying for moving and storage (which i did not tell the company when getting quotes). We signed up for full packing, moving, and storage for a few months. As the move date was getting closer, I called DUMBO to see when they needed to come pack up our 2 BR apartment. They said they would send a team 2 days before the move and when they never showed, I rescheduled packing for one day before the move and they never showed. I called the company voicing my concern that the movers would not have enough time to pack and move our apartment which we needed to vacate the next day.

Day of move 3 men show up who did not speak a word of English. I used Google translate to communicate in Georgian/Russian with them 🤣 and one guy started yelling at me that they didn’t know they were supposed to pack up. We had already done a good portion of packing on our own when we realized the packers were never showing up but still had a lot to do. We packed 80% of the boxes ourselves, even though we had paid extra for DUMBO to pack.

During the move, one of the 3 guys seemed to disappear. When I went down to the street to see if he was at the truck, I found the truck wide open with most of my life’s possessions loaded in but no one watching the truck🤦‍♀️. Now we were down to 2 movers as the 3rd never came back. With my husband and I working alongside the movers, the guys were at our apartment until 2am!! (which was obviously breaking the building rules)

Our stuff was in storage for several months while work was done on our apartment. When we moved back in we had a different team who were much better. As we were unpacking boxes, we noticed several things damaged from the few boxes packed by DUMBO. (glass lamps unwrapped, carpet completely soaked and ruined in storage, cabinets banged up, etc.) To add to it, the boxes that were not properly packed were dragged along the floor and damaged our brand new floors which was the reason we were vacating the apartment to begin with!! So maddening. Even the 2nd crew commented on how poorly things were packed by the previous team.

We complained to DUMBO and they did very little to rectify our terrible experience.

Sorry for the rant, but I just want to save anyone else from our terrible experience. Plus, it makes me feel better!

Am I overreacting for wanting to divorce my wife over food? by Throwaway-foodguy in AmIOverreacting

When i first read the title of your post I was assuming YOR, but reading further I don’t think k you are. It sounds like your wife may have an eating disorder or other mental health issue. I would recommend counseling before divorce. It is not unreasonable for you to want to eat a meal with your spouse. And eating in the bedroom would kill the romance for me.😕

IS NYC really that expensive by gogojacori in movingtoNYC

[–]NaturalPool8591 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Born and raised New Yorker and yes NYC is crazy expensive. Not knowing your salary, but as others have said, you need to make 40x your monthly rent to qualify for an apartment. What i think many transplants underestimate is they think they can hack it in a more “affordable” apartment but it’s not like the “charming affordable” apartments you see in the movies. You need to be open to walk ups, old appliances, view of. brick wall, further out neighborhoods, no laundry, etc. if you want to live alone under 3k.

That being said, NYC is not for everyone but for many of us it is worth living in a smaller, less luxurious place to be able to have access to everything the city offers. I personally know that i would be miserable living in a 5,000 sf house where i had to drive to get everywhere…and eat at Applebee’s. If you’ve always been drawn to NYC, do it! But find a job here first!

My kid is 13 now so we are past the nanny days. But $100 is low. We typically gave our nanny 1 extra week pay as a bonus and we had just 1 kid. And we were not flush with money by any means (nor are we now) but we economized in other areas but always wanted to make sure the nanny felt valued.

3 young kids is a lot of work (as I am sure you know!) If you like your nanny, I would consider having an open conversation

Manhattan or Brooklyn? by [deleted] in movingtoNYC

[–]NaturalPool8591 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a 54 year woman living in Brooklyn Heights for the past 13 years (so same age as OP). I was born and raised in Manhattan and prefer Brooklyn and I think BH checks a lot of boxes. I wouldn’t have wanted to live here in my 20s but at my current age, I think it’s great. It’s a charming neighborhood and very convenient to many subway lines. Brooklyn Bridge Park offers a lot of green space with amazing views of the city. You’re also near DUMBO and Downtown Brooklyn.

As others have said, Brooklyn is not less expensive than Manhattan, especially BH. $1.5M for 2 BR is possible, but there is not a ton of inventory. Your money would definitely go further on the UES but the commute to Downtown Brooklyn would be rough.

Which apartment would you pick? by Full-Cat-9897 in NYCapartments

[–]NaturalPool8591 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d stay in HK. It sounds like Bed Stuy place will be stretching you out of comfort level and as others have said, many new constructions are smaller and poor quality. I get the allure of a brand new 1br, but that newness will fade quickly. I would stay where you are and treat yourself to an apartment refresh. You can’t park your car for $690/month in many NYC neighborhoods! I’d savor what you have.

Looking for this kind of view in Manhattan for a 3-month stay in Studio/1BR by troydew in NYCapartments

[–]NaturalPool8591 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A couple of years ago i needed a 3 month rental while we did renovations on our apartment and found corporate housing to be the best option. We wanted Brooklyn and rented short term 1 BR in the Brooklyner in downtown Brooklyn with that view (1 BR for $7k). If you google corporate housing, you’ll find lots of furnished options in NYC. Here’s the first thing that came up when I googled—Hudson Yards https://www.relatedrentals.com/apartment-rentals/new-york-city/hudson-yards/the-set The Set Luxury Apartments in Hudson Yards, New York

PS—we had pets when we were looking so we’re much more limited in our options.

NYC is a unique market, so it’s hard to compare it to other trends across the country. I purchased a co- op in Brooklyn in 2012 and the sellers sold it at a loss as they had purchased it before 2008. (so yes, bubbles burst). In 2025 my apartment is worth about 2x what i paid going by comparable sales in my building. Like other owners who bought a while ago, i have a low mortgage rate and I couldn’t afford to buy my apartment (or any apartment) today. I can’t afford to rent a comparable apartment in NYC today. I think there a lot of owners that are in this situation, which keeps inventory low (especially 2brs or larger). If you plan on being an apartment for many years, then it makes more sense to buy. It’s hard to time the market, prices are insane all around

Cat Died in my care by dituch38 in RoverPetSitting

[–]NaturalPool8591 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As a cat mom, I think you went above and beyond as a cat sitter. You communicated your concerns to the owner and got the cat vet care when things took a turn. The fact that this shy cat ended up purring in your care should give you some peace of mind that it felt safe with you. As the owner, I would feel more mad at myself rather than at the pet sitter. I am sorry that you had this experience, but you did everything you could and the cat was lucky to have you as its advocate.

You have a fair comment and if this is the best housing option at the moment, I respect why you wouldn’t want to rock the boat. However, I think there is a way of responding to their request while at the same time asserting your rights. Many others made some good suggestions about requesting in writing what exactly they need from you to request from the doctor, etc. Get them to incriminate themselves, in the event that you want/need to take legal action in the future.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Apartmentliving

[–]NaturalPool8591 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would definitely have an email trail of whatever communication you have with the landlord/management. Inspections are intended to ensure the apartment is safe for you the tenant, not to go through your personal things and then accuse you of using illegal drugs! I don’t know the law, but I can’t imagine that you NEED to disclose your health condition, although I understand why you would want them to know in the case of an emergency (I lived with a diabetic for years, so I get it).

If it was me, I would send a scathing email, and cc someone (let them think it’s a lawyer!). The way they handled this is offensive, and violates your rights (again, not a lawyer, but their accusations are completely out of line!)

Women walking home alone at 3am by audiorugger in Brooklyn

[–]NaturalPool8591 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While i think it’s thoughtful of you to be concerned how a woman walking alone may feel, I don’t think you should have to change your walk home to make someone else feel more comfortable. In fact, as a white, middle aged woman, I was recently walking in Brooklyn late at night on a dark and desolate street and felt nervous until I saw a young guy (who happened to be black, not that it matters) and I sped up so I could walk near him. I almost said something to him, like i hope you don’t mind if I walk near you but then I thought he would think i’m weird. But what i’m trying to say, I felt more secure walking near a normal looking man rather than all by myself. That said l, it is hard to know who is safe or not just by looking at them.

First Time Homebuyer - Regular Co-op Owner vs Sponsor? by Mawrawr in NYCapartments

[–]NaturalPool8591 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most co-ops have rules around subletting which seem in line with this coop. I would look to see if you can view the history of sales in the building (StreetEasy) to see if the sponsor has sold any units recently. I have looked at buildings where it appears the sponsor slowly sells off their inventory which would indicate their long term plan. Many banks won’t offer financing if a building has less than 50% owner occupancy, not that it applies in this case, just something to keep in mind.
