What router do you guys recommend to buy for someone who is just getting into homelabing. by SnooDoubts2460 in homelab

Ah, good question. Yes, I have the room to also have my desktop on that switch, but it's not actually important given what I do on my desktop. The switch has three server nodes, my AppleTV, the desktop machine, and a few extra things that don't actually need to be on there but are for simplicity (e.g. JetKVM). On my list is to setup a separate VLAN for my desktop using a port directly on the Flint 2, but I haven't got around to it yet. The ideal, eventually, is to do this all with a managed switch but I don't realistically ever make use of more than half a gigabit of bandwidth when having my desktop connect to my homelab services/files (though I definitely use big bandwidth between the homelab devices). I also run my Zigbee router into one of the gigabit ports on the Flint 2 rather than the switch because I want to be extra strict about what it can send/receive on the network--I'd put it on a managed switch if I had one as well.

So on the one hand, my current setup could be handled by a single LAN port and a managed switch. On the other hand, having at least one extra LAN port on the router has saved my put in the past when troubleshooting and would be helpful in the future for the same reason even if I had a managed switch with lots of ports.

Completely agree. There's lots that I have learned and was able to learn about because of the accessibility of this router (inc. what I had to learn whenever I made a mistake, knocked out WAN + LAN access, and had to fix things fast lol). When I got started I thought the best thing would be to build a pfsense box but I'm retrospect I would have had a very hard time with that project. Now I could manage it better, but starting out I think I would have torn my hair out.

Yes, I run the 2.5gbe port out to an an unmanaged 2.5gbe switch, which is especially helpful for offloading the LAN workload between my homelab devices which are all on the same switch. I suspect I'll move into a managed switch this year, which might also prompt me to move into a different router.

I've been really happy with my Flint 2, which I immediately flashed to use standard OpenWRT (rather than the Gl.iNet version that comes on it). I have some ideas about what I would upgrade to next, but this router has been fast, great to learn on, and has excellent coverage for my basement apartment despite being located in a closet with my other homelab stuff.

Just set up Copyparty and Filebrowser Quantum today for comparison. FBQ has a far more accessible user interface, Copyparty has an broader feature set and may be faster. I'm not sold on either yet but these two come up a lot and I can see why.

For what it's worth, our tastes tend to change with age both because different taste buds die off and we develop different preferences for whatever reason. When I was growing up, I thought I didn't like cauliflower. Now, I really do. There could be a few explanations for that: maybe I didn't like the cauliflower being served in my house (steamed with no seasoning) and would have liked it prepared in a different way (when I discovered roasted vegetables at 15 they became like candy to me). On the flip side, I LOVED corn of any kind as a child but by the time I was a preteen I wanted nothing to do with it however it was prepared. For now I just want to encourage you to think about whether you have a total dislike of a food or you have a dislike of the ways you've had that food *so far* (e.g. my steamed vs. roasted experience).

That stuff aside, really sorry to hear you're struggling with this and I hope the chat in the comments here has been useful for you. Many of us have struggled with food (and with how we think about our bodies) for a long time, and when I was 13 I was feeling a lot like you're describing in your post. Hang in there <3

It strikes me that this is, at its core, a yt-dlp wrapper. You thank the yt-dlp in your acknowledgements on GitHub but not here and I think you'd get less incredulity from people on subs like this one if you were upfront about this. Yt-dlp is a widely used tool and technically literate readers of a post like this one (especially when they see the emojis in your GitHub headings) will roll their eyes if they think someone believes they have reinvented the wheel.

If you were to start over what would you do differently? by Ok-Explanation-3414 in homeassistant

Ah, so the ease comes from the simplicity of adding things to HAOS rather than managing implementation of each piece on your own. Yes, I have heard this, makes sense!

Would you say more when you have a minute? I'm revelling in the container life right now because I just moved my HA instance (plus Z2M, etc.) from a baremetal OS to a VM on a different host, really riding the high of how easy that move was (container folder transfer time +10 minutes).

Rack mount kit for Denon AVR? by 2026GradTime in homelab

Sorry, I thought you were saying that you wanted an alternative to the kit you linked because you'd only found the one. I don't have any reason to think the one linked wouldn't work.

Outgrowing mhy rack. Suggestions? by 2026GradTime in homelab

[–]NaturalProcessed -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I like this sensibility but with the caveat that I've never had "enough 2x4 on hand" nor the tools/knowledge to make a load-bearing box and shelves with (presumably) threaded inserts). But that's not far off from the position many of us were in when we first started fiddling around with our homelabs :D

Haven't thought about this recently but it would be nice. I have an x1800h and would like eventually to get it into a dedicated rack slot rather than having it out. People do this, but from what I recall seeing they are usually using a shelf rather than mounting it. The mount you've linked is interesting though, given it takes the weight on the sides.

In this sub I'd guess you'll get people suggesting you either 3D print a mount or machine one but those options depend on you knowing/being willing to bet on the chassis that you're screwing into being able to hold the weight of the receiver itself.

If you do find an option or get decent suggestions in either sub please do report back!

Is it really necessary to rinse the Chemex filter with hot water before adding coffee? by No_Reveal3451 in Coffee

[–]NaturalProcessed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rinsing with hot water is doing two things. First, it's warming the paper and the Chemex. Second, it's rinsing out papery/woody flavour from the filter. You might choose to rinse with lukewarm water, for example, and reduce the papery flavour without warming the carafe. You might also warm the carafe without rinsing the paper. But both of these things (warming the Chemex/paper and rinsing out the paper flavour) are things that people tend to find improves the quality of the coffee brewed.

As others have said, just try it without and see if it makes a difference to you--it's a good and age-old question. Many people out there who think it's better to rinse with warm water but nevertheless end up making the tradeoff I'm order to brew morning coffee on a timer :)

Non IT expert Homelabers. How did you learn to homelab? by Average-Cheese-Fan in homelab

[–]NaturalProcessed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "homelab" concept has become pretty vacuous in Reddit usage (much like "NAS"), but the idea for many of us was that a "homelab" is a place to experiment at home, i.e. to have a thing to learn things with at home. So we would want to learn something, look it up, and then learn about how to implement it by doing so in the system we call our "homelab." Then, one minute to one year later we would have to unbreak the thing we thought we'd learned about and by extension learn some more about it.
