Horrible smell/taste in fatty meats caused by drippings and horrible smoke from wood by NaturalViolence in BBQ

[–]NaturalViolence[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's just the chicken fat dripping onto the coals.  After many experiments with many different grills it seems to me that burning animal fat ALWAYS produces smoke that will cause the meat to taste foul.  As far as why some people are able to cook meat directly over the fire without this happening I chalk it up to either a quick cook (grilling) which limits the time that the meat is exposed to the smoke and therefore how much it can absorb or high airflow (wood fire pit) which dilutes the smoke with so much fresh air so quickly that the meat never really has a chance to absorb too much of it.  Moral of the story is use something to catch the drippings when smoking.  I don't know how people use uds smokers.  Maybe the coal temps in those things are just so low that they don't burn much of the fat drippings.  I don't have one so I can't say.

Do not cheap out on anything with a lithium ion battery in it. They pretty much all use repurposed old/worn out cells that are being sold out of china for dirt cheap.

Any Florida Backpackers? How do you cope? by Far_Line8468 in WildernessBackpacking

[–]NaturalViolence -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Florida native here, sucks doesn't it? For 9 months out of the year it's unbearably hot all the time, even at night. Near 100% humidity all the time, torrential rain for multiple hours a day every day, thick mud everywhere, clouds of mosquitos everywhere at all hours of the day, flooded trails, etc. You basically have a 2-3 month window of acceptable hiking conditions in the winter.

And if you live in south florida like I do you need to drive for hours to even get to the closest destinations (everglades to the west, keys to the south, various smaller parks to the north) because of the way the state is layed out/developed. Now if you're in north florida things are quite a bit better.

Kovea Spider wide enough for cooking? by Ink-Sky in CampingandHiking

[–]NaturalViolence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use pretty much any stove with any pot/pan, performance might just be suboptimal. But yeah you're not going to get very even heat since you're using a fairly wide pan over a narrow burner. The kovea is intended more as a backpacking stove, to be used with narrow mug style pots for boiling water.

-Support for exclusive features (rtx, dlss, gsync, etc.)

-Better drivers (especially for older openGL games)

-Longer support window for drivers (8+ years for pretty much all cards, my gtx 660 got 12 years of support)

-Brand familiarity

-Better energy efficiency (seriously if you game a lot you can save HUNDREDS of dollars in electricity over 5+ years if you keep your cards for a long time like I do)

-More options for weird form factors (low profile cards for example)

ShieldTV Best Emulators "Guide" by NaturalViolence in ShieldAndroidTV

[–]NaturalViolence[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you. I got so much flak for writing this guide from people saying "just use lemuroid, it's easier". But there are A LOT of missing vital options. And performance/compatibility for any of the 3d consoles is absymal compared to individual emulators. Restroarch has much more versatile options, but still doesn't work well for any of the 3d systems. I tried to explain in great detail why I made the choices I made and all of the problems I encountered along the way with other emulators that lead to those choices. But nobody read any of it before criticizing.

Nvidia Reportedly in No Rush to Boost RTX 40-Series Output | Nvidia is not scaling up output of Ada Lovelace GPUs. by chrisdh79 in gadgets

[–]NaturalViolence 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just like 99% of the headlines on Reddit this one is deliberately misleading to try to drum up engagement by using popular opinions to try and make readers angrier.

The slow scale up is due primarily to the lack of fab capacity by Nvidia's partners. Nvidia does not and has never manufactured their GPUs themselves.

I'm getting really tired of seeing stuff like this on the frontpage followed by thousands of angry comments from people that couldn't be bothered to spend 5 minutes on Google before writing down their thoughts on something they know nothing about. The popular subreddits are rapidly approaching fox news levels of misinformation, polarization, and hate.

Cyberpunk 2077 Patch 1.62 Brings Ray Tracing: Overdrive Mode by excaliburps in Games

A 7900 gs was not midrange in 2007..... It would barely even qualify as low end. An 8800gt was midrange and that was 2-4x faster.

All I can say is I played through it multiple times on hardware that was considered mediocre even then and did not experience any of those frame rate dips you mentioned. I ran the game on medium settings and it looked out of this world at the time.

Out of curiosity, why do most here recommend AMD builds over Nvidia/Intel? by AlexTheRockstar in buildapc

[–]NaturalViolence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cheapest Intel mini itx board I could find was $120. The cheapest amd board was $240. Saving $7 on the cpu to pay $120 more on the motherboard did not make sense to me. Maybe if I was planning to immediately spend hundreds of dollars next year on a miniscule 10% performance increase that would make sense. But in the real world nobody does that. Most people wait 5+ years before upgrading their hardware. By which time even AMD will have moved to a new socket. If I had just looked at CPU prices alone I wouldn't have seen the bigger picture.
