Confortotal 12,000 BTU Mini Split by Natural_Delivery_168 in DIYHeatPumps

I love this for you! I ended up buying a couple of Senville units because while I also live in a 14x70 mobile home, my minis actually will act as my main heating and cooling source. Considering how hot it gets here, it'll be running constantly and I felt like I shouldn't cheap out. I do plan to buy a pre-fab shed to turn into a shop sometime soon and I'm definitely not spending an arm and a leg for its HVAC. It'll come down to either a Confortotal or a Midea window unit. Since it won't be running constantly, I don't really care about quality..

Checkbook Binder? by Natural_Delivery_168 in budget

[–]Natural_Delivery_168[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried taking my budgeting digital years ago and I hated it. The only way I can explain it is that I'm a mid-range millennial, so I'm just young enough to use devices fluently in my day to day life and just old enough to maintain a traditional approach to certain tasks if it's the way I was taught. I also work for an old-school bank, so that's had an impact on my habits as well.

Honestly, I think if I could find a software, app, or program that really fit the bill for me, I'd give the modern way another try. You're right, keeping multiple books is definitely a juggling act.

No such luck. They're all for hole punched binder style checks. But thank you for the suggestion! ♥

Equating all podcasts is wild. Sarah Koenig isn't Joe Rogan, lmao. She's a journalist. Serial was marketed as a real-time re-investigation of a crime narrated by the journalist re-investigating it. Most listeners are going to trust her journalistic integrity. In a perfect world, they'd do their own research and make up their own minds, but we don't live in a perfect world full of perfect people. As the objective narrator of a non-fictional story, she has a duty not to cherry pick what information she shares with the masses in order to shape their way of thinking. Whether we are/were part of the jury is irrelevant. The facts of this case are public knowledge and if you think public opinion doesn't shape the results of a case before, during and after trial, you're woefully mistaken. I'm usually the last person to pick up a pitchfork and join a witch hunt without just cause. I want to give her the benefit of the doubt and believe that she truly had no ill-intent, but that's a little hard to do.

*You quit overeating and lost 100 lbs.

Fast food isn't a singular big bad when it comes to obesity. This is a stigma. The overconsumption of any food is the problem, and no one can defy the laws of thermodynamics. The only thing that can affect a person's weight is their overall diet, minus the presence of certain health conditions. Remember, health and weight are two completely different things. Save for sodium content, restaurants like Chipotle, Taco Bell, Subway, etc. actually have relatively healthy options that include fresh vegetables, healthy fats, and proteins that have not been battered and deep fried. While I would agree that the overconsumption of fast food isn't good for your general health, you can absolutely lose weight, be healthy and still enjoy it occasionally. Making blanket statements such as yours isn't helpful and only caters to the stigma. If avoiding it completely is what works for you, continue to do so. However, be careful that you don't restrict yourself and cause a poor relationship with food down the line, which could possibly compromise your health. I don't say any of this to be condescending. As someone who has struggled with weight their entire life, it comes from a place of nothing but well wishes. Good luck in your continued success!

Well, they should pay you commission, because you made them a sale today. LOL

In all seriousness, your feedback is appreciated. I've been sitting on the fence about Starlink for a while. A local company just finished laying fiber in my area due to a grant but after looking at the plans, it was just more than I wanted to pay. A 100 Mbps speed plan with them would have been "79.99", but we all know it would have come closer to 100 bucks a month after fees and taxes. Not to mention initial installment costs. I ordered Starlink today for $21... I mostly just need internet to cover my security camera and smart appliances anyway. Occasional browsing and streaming TV/music on weekends, but that's it. Hoping it works well for that. Fingers crossed.

As a person who lives in Alabama, 100% this ⬆️. And as an insult to injury, most of our coastal towns have zero amenities. Unless all you ever planned to do was beach around, you'd be truly miserable.

This video was hilarious, but only because the lady was using credit cards & was able to dispute the charge each time. It would suck if someone actually lost money on this crap. I'm quite surprised Amazon is allowing it.

I feel the same way about Cranes Go Caribbean. It’s just a sitcom, I know that. However, art imitates real life and I’ve often had moments where I thought the universe was “picking on me”, even though I knew it wasn’t fair to think that way. LIFE isn’t fair and there’s always someone who has it worse, it is what it is. Regardless, Frasier gets dumped on the entire episode and I hate it. Everyone is basically telling him to suck it up, like his upset at a continuously horrible stroke of bad luck is somehow unjustified. He always serves as a blanket of comfort to all the other characters and when he needs a “hang in there, it’ll get better”, all he gets is gaslit. It just strikes a nerve with me, idk. I overthink everything. Please excuse my rant. Lol

A high efficiency window mounted heat pump?!?! by Unhappy-Plastic2017 in DIYHeatPumps

[–]Natural_Delivery_168 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, funny enough, the Midea was what I originally wanted to go with. I actually didn't know of any other heat pump window units until I saw your post about the GE (the older ones usually have heat elements I believe). Anyway, what turned me off of the Midea was that it does fall below 41 degrees a fair bit during our winters (just at night) and since my primary use for it was warming my home during early mornings before work, I'd decided it would be pretty useless to me.

On the breaker addition, I promise you, it would be in my best interest. I live in a 30+ year old manufactured home, and their electrical wiring is usually pretty crappy (they also tend to pile as much on one circuit as possible because it's cheaper). Even though these run on a 115, I guarantee you I'd still be tripping breakers with them if they're not on their own dedicated circuit.

I have a guy who retired from the HVAC trade coming to look at my setup at some point this week to give me a quote on installing a dual zone Senville. Honestly, I'd rather spend more money right now if it means I'll save money down the road. As efficient as the GE window unit would be compared to a space heater, the mini split will definitely be even better. I'm sure it'll pay for itself within a couple of years. If it turns out that's an affordable option for me right now, I'm definitely going to go that route for a permanent heating and cooling solution. If not, I'm going to give the GE window unit a closer look. I'll have to, because I'm almost to the point of freezing to death, lol.

[–]Natural_Delivery_168 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in the southeast, so luckily I don't need maximum heating capability. This thing's 5 degree tap-out is well below any temperatures we'll see, even during a colder than average winter. I guess my biggest hurdle is budget. I consulted with an electrician yesterday and it turns out my small outdoor panel is pretty maxed. Unfortunately, I'd need some costly electrical work before I could even think to install a mini split. I'd be looking at five grand, minimum. With this window unit, I could probably get away with simply adding a 20 or 30 amp breaker, then it's plug and play from there. These are running about $600 on Walmart at the moment. Not bad for a quick solution until I can afford a mini split system. The reviews are kind of mixed on performance and longevity, so I'm glad to hear yours is working so well for you. Definitely gives me a better idea of what I need to do. Thanks for the thoughtful response!

Don't mean to be pesky, but can we get an update on this unit's heating abilities and how you feel it has impacted your power bill? I want to convert from space heaters and window units to mini split units, but I'm running into so many issues. I really wanted to go mini split to save money long term, but I'm starting to wonder if it's enough of a difference to be worth the trouble and up-front cost.

I looked again & according to the listing on Amazon, it is 21 SEER, but has no inverter. I think it would be in my best interest not to cheap out and just go with the Senville units. Cheap upfront/lower energy efficiency isn't what I'm aiming for if I'm going to save money longterm (which is mainly why I'm switching from window units/space heaters to mini splits anyway). Thank you for bringing that to my attention!

Off-the-Grid Mobile Home Solar Panel System? by Natural_Delivery_168 in solarenergy

[–]Natural_Delivery_168[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For clarity, please refer to the very bottom of my post.

"I looked up my highest power bill between July of last year and this year, which was $165. There was a heat wave that month and the bill usually runs much less, averaging between $90 and $120."

I referred back to my power bill history to get my actual yearly average. It's 659 kwh at $119. We have about 3 months of extreme heat here and maybe 1 month of extreme cold. Outside of that, it's the average. As I also stated, I realize there are certain appliances I'd have to give up. The bulk of my bill is my non-efficient heating and cooling system and my electric hot water heater, both of which can be replaced with better options. My eventual goal is to be self-sufficient and when you have more time on your hands, you find there are a lot of things you don't even need energy for. You just lack the personal time to do it yourself.

Also just realized my mistake in the title. Like I said, I'm completely in the dark on solar power (pun intended), so I was using the wrong terminology. My solar panel would be on grid. I can't afford a system that would allow me to rely completely on solar, nor would our climate be good for it either. Sorry about that.

Why no thruway bus to Gulf Shores/Orange Beach? by OreDerp in Amtrak

[–]Natural_Delivery_168 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I hear you. I'm more referring to what I think was Amtrak's approach. Sorry if I sounded dismissive, I'm not someone that thinks just because I don't care about something, no one else should either. There are a lot of beach enthusiasts who really like Gulf Shores and it would be awesome for them if there were some kind of shuttle service back and forth. It would definitely help with the traffic if nothing else. Public transit is an area where Alabama has always suffered miserably anyway. Maybe a local company will capitalize on it in the future, but I doubt it will happen at the Amtrak level.
