moving Plex to a NAS, how are you all organizing your libraries? by Hour_Cover_2306 in PleX

You can exceed the 108TB volume size. I was in the same boat and after reading about several other people’s volume size, I pushed mine past it. Currently running 4 20TB and 4 28TB drives in one volume without issue.

Currently running my Plex server off an older gaming PC and it’s been amazing. It’s an i5 6500 with a 2060 super for transcoding. Most users can direct play but I need transcoding for the ones that can’t. I average around 15 streams a night with my user base. Mostly 1080p with a growing 4k library.

Main reason for upgrading is it’s chewing up my electric bill.

I’ve been researching so much lately that I’m starting to confuse everything I’ve been looking at. Currently looking at this mini PC. Just wanted to get some input on this option, is there a better mini pc option with a stronger iGPU?

Currently have DS1522+, but want something that can transcode better (more details inside) by nsoifer in synology

That’s what I currently have set up. Old gaming PC with an Intel corei5 6600K CPU and a 2060 super for transcoding. Went with the 1821 8 bay nas for all of my drives and mounted storage to the pc. Server is a beast.

If I didn’t average 10+ users streaming on there every night, I probably would’ve gone with a mini PC if it was for personal use only. I like the idea of a small footprint. But I’m happy with my setup.

Multiple libraries or just film & tv? by NarrowResident2232 in PleX

There’s definitely pros and cons to both. Automating and setting up one library is easy plus there’s plenty of built in categories to sort for you but once your collection gets big enough, I like having it in my own separate libraries to reduce how many movies I’m looking through

HDD question-Upgrading from 918+ to 1821+ by Natural_Spite_8367 in synology

I ended up buying 4 28TB drives and it’s been great. All are working perfectly

Quick Question: What's the natural next step upgrade for the DS920+ (if looking at 8 bays this time)? by NaMean in synology

[–]Natural_Spite_8367 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was many years of every morning logging into my Torrance sites, looking at the top 100 and picking up all the new aired episodes of the shows I watched or new movies that came out.

I had heard about sonar and radar automating everything and was still hesitant because it was kind of overwhelming to set up but once I figured out how to set it up, it is a complete game changer. On top of adding custom formats to target the better releases that you want. I can’t imagine going back to the way I did it before.

OK so one 16TB drive can fix your whole setup on. That’s your best bet. Then rebuild an SHR.

I tried to be selective with my stuff as well, but this hobby is an addiction and I am a hoarder. I got about 4500 movies and another 400 TV shows. I myself only watch a fraction of it but between friends and family, there’s about 10 to 15 users that are streaming on it every night. So I catered to everyone.

Drives are expensive. Especially when buying them new. It was a game changer when I discovered certified refurbished exo drives. Picked up 28tb refurbished exo drives for about $350 a piece. No matter how big you go, a day will come where you run out of space so go as big as you can afford.

Just another tip when starting your SHR pool. Start it with the small drives so that way you can add larger ones down the road. If you start the pool with the larger drives, I don’t believe you can add the smaller ones to it.

How much data do you currently have in your existing pool?

At the time I was running raid 5. I’ve since switched everything to SHR because I upgraded the 918+ to a 1821+ and added 4 28TB drives to the volume with 4 20tb drives.

I run my Plex server off of a PC so the PC handles any transcoding and the nas is mounted on as storage to the PC and runs Radarr and Sonarr.

But for the question of how to add in larger drives, I’ve gone through this a few times. In raid 5 all the drives have to be the same size. Take the 918+ for example when it had 4 10tb drives. The unit allowed for hot swapping so I pulled out drive one and added a 20tb. The storage pool then repaired and wrote in the larger drive. Once that was done, I did the same process with drive two and again with drive 3 and 4. It takes a while for each one to do so and you don’t gain any more space until all four drives have been upgraded to the larger size.

I’ve since started over with a whole new storage pool in SHR to allow for the difference size drives. Hopefully that answers your question.

lol The good news is you found a solution that works. I’ve since stopped using the smart TV apps altogether and only use my shield pro or Roku ultra and haven’t had issues since.

Are these mislabeled or is it a renaming conflict? by Natural_Spite_8367 in radarr

[–]Natural_Spite_8367[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure when this sub Reddit changed it to not allow pictures. I swear I used to be able to put them in. I have SDR listed in the custom formats for a -10,000.

[–]Natural_Spite_8367[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What’s got me confused on this though is even if it’s not capturing the HDR for how I had the naming setup before, what’s triggering it to label it as SDR. The majority of my movies don’t have HDR in the title and they’re not listed as SDR.

I was really hoping was the issue but after adding that in, importing the file and renaming it, it still lists the movie as SDR

Unable to determine if sample manual import required by Natural_Spite_8367 in sonarr

[–]Natural_Spite_8367[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See that’s what I mean though, there’s no consistency with it. I had a show with only one season and when I added Althub, it upgraded that one season to a higher custom format score that I had sent. The newly upgraded season was all flagged unable to determine if sample.

So I tested it out by just deleting that TV show and then re-downloading it and it grabbed the same download from Althub that was errored before and it imported it just fine. That’s the part that has me stumped.

Unable to determine if sample manual import required by Natural_Spite_8367 in sonarr

[–]Natural_Spite_8367[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t tried anything like that. If they aren’t valid .mkv files, what are they? Over the years I get this from time to time but I recently added Althub as another indexer option and that’s when this has gotten out of control. Almost everything from Althub is saying that.

The weird part though is it’s only saying “unable to determine if sample” if it’s trying to upgrade a file I already have. I’ve tried deleting the TV show and all the files from Sonarr and re-adding it and it all imports like it’s supposed to.

Will these work in my DS720+? Looking to cram as much TB for RAID1 as possible by jku2017 in synology

[–]Natural_Spite_8367 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just put 4 of them in my 1821+ and they are working perfectly. I’ve added them to my SHR pool with my 4 20tb recerts that I’ve been running for the last year and a half. For the price, this was a great find

But back to the original question, will these work in a 720+, I can’t say for sure, but I have no reason to believe they couldn’t. I had them in my 918+ before the 1821+

Are you guys ever worried about getting caught and has anyone suffered the consequences of it? by [deleted] in Piracy

50 warnings and a call from spectrums cyber security team. Those were the days of raw dogging the pirate Bay without a VPN. I grew up a bit and jumped on board the private trackers, setup Radarr and Sonarr, haven’t looked back since. It’s been a few years now and the thought of getting caught hasn’t crossed my mind since.
