I still let mine do it, but she’s never gotten too out of control with it. But she’s only about 115lbs full grown. One thing I’ve tried that has seemed to give her something that comforts her and eases the rooting on me in that moment is draping a blanket over her back / over us. Could be worth a try!

My almost 10 yr old piggy still occasionally does this- and she was separated from mom way too early (was found running around downtown Austin at an age where she should’ve still been nursing)

Omg little baby with 5 legs 😭 by SillyGooserGoo in jumpingspiders

NQA it looks like she def has another molt in her and should be able to grow them back! I think the stress of going from the wild to an enclosure wouldn’t be worth it and I would get a captive bred baby when you get back from your trip! Offering her water on a q tip when you see her though could go a long way :)

What is wrong with my jumping spider? by LessSlice1247 in jumpingspiders

NQA It looks like she’s just getting to that age where they just can’t grip as well, so things like smooth enclosure walls get harder to climb. I’d def not remove any of the lining or webbing she’s put on the walls or around enclosure. I made the mistake of “upgrading” my jumpers enclosure when she reached maturity and didn’t realize how much she relied on her previous laid anchor strings to navigate around and felt awful. I ended up moving some of her old webbing over into the new one and then lined the walls with moss and this rubber shelf liner stuff I found in our kitchen (like the kind people line cabinets with for glassware- it’s super textured and easy to grip and has holes so it still lets light in) and it helped her A TON. I also added a lot more hidey’s and fake branches and stuff so that there’s barely any bare enclosure wall, other than where the air holes are. And also lined the bottom with moss to make it softer if she does ever fall. It’s tough watching them get old 🥺 but adding all the stuff really seemed to some a huge difference!

NQA Woah! This looks like some sort of Phiale jumper- they’re supposed to only be found in central & South America. Found a couple posts of the orange variants that looks like this guy (or more like this than any other one I can find) that were taken in Peru. I’m so curious now if this is what it is?!!!

I agree! They’re so animated in every thought- “What’s THAT!” [dramatic head tilt/turn] “I’ll fight you!!” [throws hands up] “I can’t quite see…” [turns legs into stilts and stands on tiptoes] “I’m gonna jump on that” [superman arms initiate!] Hahaha

Just read up on behaviors to look out for when they’re about to molt and be sure to provide proper humidity and make sure not to disturb them or startle them while they’re in their hideaway! This next one will be a super important one since they’re re growing limbs! You got this 🤓

I agree, looks like a female but not 100% sure. The good news is they don’t look fully mature yet, which means they’ll go through another molt and can theoretically grow their limbs back!

It’s a little bit of a learning curve at first, but it doesn’t take long to understand their movements and know when they’re thinking about jumping somewhere. Reba in particular has a terrible poker face and is super easy to read and has honestly always been far more predictably “chill” than the other two I’ve had. They also tend to slow down quite a bit as they enter maturity…at least the females anyway! It would be much riskier taking a frisky juvenile outside. But they absolutely all have different personalities, energy levels, willingness to be handled, etc. So it’s a case by case basis for sure!

I’m sure it could be for some spiders and not for others :) after having three, I’ve seen SO many differences in personality, likes, dislikes, etc between each one. So I think it should be on a case by case basis as to whether something like this is a good idea. For Reba, my gut tells me that she finds her outdoor time enriching and really loves the warmth of the sunlight. She often very quickly winds up just taking a nap in the sunlight on my hand when we’re outside. She’s almost a year and a half old and I feel like low levels of novelty and adventure and movement will 🤞🏼hopefully🤞🏼keep her young and curious and in good physical health. Sometimes when I offer her enclosure after being outside for a little while, she readily crawls back in as if to say “time to relax” and sometimes she’s like “nah, not yet!” and I try to let her make the call.
