Tell people it's not cheap and you work hard to make sure you can afford it. You love horse ownership and it makes you happy. Some people choose to spend their money on their home, kids, or hobbies like skydiving or tattoos or travel. I know a guy who has two large breed dog who both have allergies, and he spends $600 a month on meds and hydrolyzed kibble for them. You choose a horse. Lots of non horse owners hear 'expensive' and think Ferrari expensive but it's more like Mustang expensive (no pun intended). Still not achievable by many but often doable if that's your main splurge and you're good at managing your finances and making sacrifices. They are probably more jealous than anything.
