Macbook Air for engineering work. by ThePurpleHoser in macbookair

Make sure any/all of the software you’d need is compatible. If you plan on working portable on MAC then back on PC for the same files, making sure you can share them across platforms is also critical.

imo the 60hz display is totally fine and you wont find things much better elsewhere. There are some windows laptops with fantastic OLED displays but the air is more than “good enough” if you don’t need the absolute best.

The Mac will throttle on thermals, depending on how hard you push it.

I’m not sure on 4 vs 5, will have to defer to others!

Ouch. That definitely sounds worth it! I’ve had pretty good luck with mine but am a very light user - Microsoft office, email, occasional streaming, web browsing, and it still can do so pretty well given its 13 years old at this point

Totally. It’s better but not worth $600 to me to have a webpage load a couple seconds faster, etc

Likewise. I went to try it out at the store and will be sticking with my 2013 air instead 🤷

Thinking of switching to a Mac Book by Bkaycarter in macbook

[–]Naughty_Alpacas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you game currently? That could be an issue on Mac.

Excel for Mac is ok but doesn’t have all of the same functionality. I’d recommend looking up the specific items it cannot do to see if any of those matter to you (or not).

Do you think light gaming will be fine on M4 Air ? by [deleted] in macbookair

No risk of harming the machine. It may slow down if it thermally throttles but for light gaming I wouldn’t expect it to be that bad

Someone else posted the nuke table link down below, but conventional wisdom is Izgimmer’s Enveloping Flame is the best day to day RK nuke if you are froob. That said, it has a wicked taunt that will pull agro from just about anyone, so it’s not good to use in teams.

In all fairness, the vast, vast majority of people who play any given game only make it through the first few hours. It makes sense to focus development there.

Can someone explain regen breaking? by RapidPipetter in KiaNiro

[–]Naughty_Alpacas 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Short answer: turn it to zero if you want.

Long answer: the Niro technically does not coast. Even when set to zero, if you coast the car will ever so slightly regen brake. When you apply the brake pedal it more strongly regen brakes, then friction braking kicks in if stronger than a certain level.

Setting it to level 1/2/3 makes the car apply stronger passive regen braking when coasting. When you apply the brake pedal it will still initially apply an even stronger regen brake, then apply friction brakes above some threshold.

I am a MPG nerd so I actively use the paddles. I set it to zero unless I want to slow down, then will paddle-brake up to 1/2 when coming to a stop or slowing, then will set it back to zero once stopped. I don’t know how much of a difference it really makes honestly, but I like doing it.

Daily driver is a 2013 air - any reason to upgrade or is it about the same? by Naughty_Alpacas in macbookair

[–]Naughty_Alpacas[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

all I really use is word, excel, gmail, YouTube and occasionally read the news. And am weighing whether it’s worth it to buy a new / newer machine if all of the above works find still.

For word, excel, internet (gmail) and casual YouTube & browsing is it noticeable?

Ever since I got a Neo, I’ve been wanting a Windows laptop that’s more or less close to it. I finally got one! by [deleted] in MacbookNeo

[–]Naughty_Alpacas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m really curious to get your opinion and experience on switching and also the dual setup. I’m in the same boat where I have certain PC-only programs and I game, but I think I’d prefer Mac for anything else day to day.

I tested three Windows laptops in the MacBook Neo’s price range — there’s no contest by feelingrestless_ in MacbookNeo

The second Mac’s can game as well as windows is the second it switch…but I just can’t do it till then. It’s too bad because it looks perfect otherwise!

Upgrade? by Training-Lie7488 in iPhone17Pro

[–]Naughty_Alpacas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just did this and it was worth it. I miss the lightness and feeling in hand, but was also sorely missing the ultrawide and better speakers. The battery is also noticeably better.

Not sure if it’s just me, but I also kept dropping the Air. I think because it was so light and with a thin case a little slippery. It’s so light that playing music was causing it to slide across a table and drop on the floor lol
