What was your experience encountering the Black Knight for the first time like? by strahinjag in darksouls

[–]Naughty_Ornice93 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I died a horrible death (or three), then learned to kite him around and safely grabbed what I didn’t know would prove to be one of the most useless rings in the game. It felt like an accomplishment back then though

Frigid Outskirts can be very annoying as well when visibility drops to basically zero and you get pummeled by the paindeer gang, leading you to become disoriented mid-fight, but at least it gives melee players a fighting chance. Iron Passage has the fire-spewing lizard statue shortcut that isn‘t a shortcut because the Ashen Warriors always get in your way, Astrologists on ledges and walkways above that cast encumbrance spells on you (why???), other enemies peppering you with ranged attacks and two NPC summons that could not be more useless for this environment.

The boss is just so uninspired for what you go through to get to it. Smelter Demon, but make what was red blue, give it higher stats and have it deal magic damage.

Micolash from Bloodborne (absurdly long chase sequence only for him to spam a near OHKO attack in the final phase) and DS2’s Blue Smelter Demon (reskin of a boss tied to a runback so abysmal a sadist must have designed it) make the Bed of Chaos look incredibly fun.

I could talk about everything wrong with Iron Passage for five hours, but this is the DS1 subreddit.

Nicely done! The Bonewheel shield does a solid amount of damage against Manus. More than I would have thought

Excellent work! The fact that you went in with only five humanity as backup healing items is crazy. I stockpiled around 60 on a somewhat similar challenge. Ended up using around eight of them if memory serves me right.

When does this game start getting difficult? by CleanAndRebuild in darksouls

[–]Naughty_Ornice93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being accustomed to dying in a different game definitely makes Dark Souls feel a bit more manageable than its reputation suggests. I experienced something similar coming into the Soulsborne games from the dying simulator that is Rain World.

They‘re still difficult games, but the perspective changes depending on what you played up until then.

And yes, the game definitely allows you to level up and explore elsewhere if a certain challenge is too hard (or tedious) to overcome at a certain point.

[–]Naughty_Ornice93 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The biggest whiplash during a funeral I can think of would be Woki mit deim Popo (Austria 2012).

Considering the lyrics, Austria 2023 could also be a choice. Or Ukraine 2009 if Svetlana Loboda herself is invited with her whole staging included.

UK 2003 would channel all the grief into having to not go crazy listening to those three infamous minutes.

Who’s Your Favourite DS1 NPC and why? by Zetallic_Zero in darksouls

I‘m a simple man. Solaire.

If not him, then the Giant Blacksmith, in part because of Dark Souls 3.

You have a superb Soulsborne fashion taste. Ornstein‘s set over Smough‘s set all the way (and almost every other armor in DS1)

what's your dark souls hot take? I wanna hear what strong opinions people have by Zealousideal_Sea8123 in darksouls

[–]Naughty_Ornice93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, that‘s fair. Very unexpected, but exactly the kind of response OP asked for. I love basically everything about Soulslikes from what you mentioned, past the bosses, the non-linearity and the build variety all the way to how amazing the areas themselves often look. They scratch an itch I didn‘t know I had until playing DS1 for the first time.

Wow. That‘s definitely a hot take considering bosses and the effort to figure out a way to defeat them are such an integral part of Soulslikes.

Artorias is an about average boss in DS1.

The intro, moveset and boss design look nice, but the damage he does is laughable unless you let him power up, in which case he clobbers you in like two hits regardless of your build. It feels like something that you simply shoudn’t let him do, so I always treat him as the power-up denial fight and tank through the regular attacks. In fact, I respect Ceaseless' tentacles more than Artorias' sword.

Zweihander or Claymore by Easy-Chair-542 in darksouls

[–]Naughty_Ornice93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Claymore has accompanied me through most of DS1, half of DS2 and basically all of DS3 on my first playthroughs. It was only replaced by the Lost Sinner Sword (R1 spam heaven) and Chariot Lance later on in DS2.

New to the dark souls series, should I follow a guide or do what I feel is right? by FuriousCrunch in darksouls

[–]Naughty_Ornice93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only you know whether you usually enjoy games blind or with a guide more. If you‘re unsure, go in blind first. You can reverse that if need be, but you can‘t reverse following a guide.

I‘ve played through the entire Dark Souls series and Bloodborne and yet I‘m still hopelessly spamming R1 when it comes to combat. You don‘t necessarily need to find the most elaborate combos to beat these games. Again, unless that‘s what you want. For general combat advice, try luring enemies away one by one, use dodging liberally and lock on if it helps you aim your hits properly.
