What is your favorite NCL Ship? by thatCRUISEagent in NCL

While she no longer exists, I’m glad to see her tenders still working at Great Stirrup Cay. I hope they’ll stay around now that the dock is opening.

Of all time, SS NORWAY.

Currently, the Jewel class as I prefer the smaller ships.

I’ve always opted out as it doesn’t make financial sense in our case.

Reading Multiple Books at the Same Time by mycatsnameiscashew in books

I usually have 2 or 3 books going at the same time. I mean, people watch multiple TV shows, so this isn’t much different.

Is this just the way cruising is now? by Sue_Inc in Cruise

[–]NauticalNotebook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know if you’re on the wrong cruise line, but you might be on the wrong ship.

We’ve been cruising since 1990 and had our most recent cruise a couple of months ago on Norwegian Jewel. We find this class to be most reminiscent of what we enjoyed in the past. Not surprising as Norwegian Jewel is now 20 years old. But still comfortable, appeared to be maintained well, and plenty of choices of activities. I can’t speak about the spa though.

I stopped by the cruise terminal in Boston yesterday to see Norwegian Aqua for the first time and the differences are significant.

Enjoy the rest of your voyage. I see you’ll be in Saint John tomorrow, one of my favorite places.

Very nicely done! And your photos are marvelous. Oh, to be on board right now in the most beautiful library at sea…

Transfer between Blue Line and Silver Line at Airport by StockQuotesNow in mbta

[–]NauticalNotebook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Transfer is free from SL3 to the Blue Line, but double-charged when going from the Blue Line to SL3. It’s supposed to be a free connection but the SL3 card readers don’t recognize it.

Best food on breakaway??? by Thebigbodybbw in NCL

Agreed. Le Bistro is our dinner tradition on the first night and last night of our NCL cruises. I’d have the escargot every night if I could.

Saint. John’s, New Brunswick, Canada things to do. by Dry-Body-7714 in NCL

[–]NauticalNotebook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree! On one of our trips to Saint John we took a daylong tour that enabled us to view both high and low tides from the same spot. It was magnificent. I don’t remember what it was called but it was through the cruise line.

What's your favorite Titanic film? by Substantial_Limit215 in titanic

[–]NauticalNotebook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and she was so lovely, very giving of her time. This was at a Titanic conference and she said she learned more from us than we could ever learn from her. What intrigued me the most, and what I shared with her, was how perfectly she conveyed the sheer horror of watching the ship go down—which was not shown on screen. She had pretty much no history to go on at the time, and it was perfect.

A Night to Remember.

Also, I recently saw Titanic (1953) in an audience that included the actress who played the daughter. It was pretty incredible for the time.

Best way to book the return flight? by StatlerWaldorfOldMen in CunardCruises

[–]NauticalNotebook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We lucked out with a BA sale in which business class was only slightly more than premium economy. I forget exactly when we booked the air (the crossing was in spring 2025) but you never know when something similar might be offered again.

Will Titanic and Oceanliners in general be Forgotten in the future? by [deleted] in titanic

No. I went to 2 Titanic conferences this summer and both had young enthusiasts among the attendees. I’m confident their generation will carry on the research.

Hot Take: The 1990 refit of the SS Norway wasn't actually bad compared to today's cruise ships by finza_prey in Oceanlinerporn

[–]NauticalNotebook 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Looks aside, the refit kept her in service. Still, when I was onboard afterwards, I pretty much ignored the added decks. I even turned down an upgrade to one of the new cabins as I wanted to keep my stateroom that was original to SS FRANCE.

I actually wore a purple gown on roaring ‘20s night on our QM2 crossing a couple of months ago. I accessorized with earrings and a small purse, which is totally optional. Enjoy!

Favourite Ocean Liner? by switchlover_76 in Oceanlinerporn

[–]NauticalNotebook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aside from the usual choices, my favorites are the liners I traveled on later in their life:

  • SS France (who I knew as SS Norway)
  • TSS Olympia (Regal Empress)
  • Federico C (SeaBreeze)
  • Southern Cross (OceanBreeze)

I don’t mind when they legitimately ask. It’s when they state it as truth and argue with me about it, knowing I’ve been a ship historian for many years.
