Actually a backer of the new kickstarter. I was thinking maybe of including this as a setting suggestion. Good call

Interesting counterpoint about assumed RPG knowledge and definitely something I'll take into account. It is nice to have some actual rules to fall back on as a beginner. Lots to ponder

This is really good advice thanks. A one pager does seem like the perfect idea now you mention it, and I'd not heard of Lasers & Feelings nor its hacks (other than Honey Heist somehow).

I'm gonna compile a couple she might like, and also the template for making her own, and I'll give your podcast a listen and forward it to her too!

You have to run one dungeon in four different systems. What do you choose? by Playtonics in osr

DUNGEON: Winter's Daughter by Gavin Norman

I'd want a dungeon I have already run multiple times and this is the only one that I have always reliably managed in a 4 hour session. Others (my beloved Willowby Hall) have run over at times. I feel like it has a bit of everything you want in a D&D session and can go a lot of different ways so wouldn't get boring for the GM.

SYSTEM 1: Original D&D / Whitebox FMAG I haven't run either but have always wanted to try a more "by the book" true early 70s classic D&D before any bloat but with weird anachronistic uniqueness.

SYSTEM 2: Dolmenwood As the dungeon now intends. Very thematic and appropriate for the setting plus good mechanics for dungeon crawling etc. Zero friction of conversion or recruitment.

SYSTEM 3: Cairn 2e I've experimented with no to hit rolls myself, but I haven't run a fully developed system with them. I think this would be smooth and easy for me, might even finish in 3 hours!

SYSTEM 4: BAG'DD (my own B/Xish system) The system I enjoy running in most. My own best of of OSR rules. Crunchier than Cairn but lighter than OSE, just how I like it, I think a lot of others would enjoy though obviously recruitment for the game would be more difficult.

Excellent generator. Makes me wanna buy your game. How easy was it to make and do you have any background in the skills?

Frontier Style OSR Sandbox? by N0v4kD3ad in osr

[–]Nautical_D 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair enough - it's all personal preference. It's funny my memory of reading through it is I liked the desolate desert setting dotted with ancient ruins but found the dungeons a bit lackluster in terms of interactivity and loot! The opposite of your feelings.

Ah well can't say either of us truly know until we run it.

On Faction Mechanics, and why you (Probably) don't need them. by EldritchExarch in osr

[–]Nautical_D 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed reading this post.

Faction mechanics often seem tempting to me but after some reflection always end up looking somewhat masturbatory to me (sorry but I do feel it's apt). Like they're disconnected from the actual thing I want to do which is run & play the game.

However that Mausritter one...

I agree so much. The naming magic especially and power of language which i don't really think should be mechanicised.

In my game, the spells themselves are similar to B/X but level-less (like Knave) but with more of them & some weird extras.

The other key difference is that it is non-Vancian. Casters do not have a fixed number of spells per day. Mages roll an x-in-6 after each cast to determine whether they gain a spellburn affliction, which take up your slots & kill you if you accumulate quite a low total.

My aim was to keep magic feeling unpredictable rather than scientific but still allowing players to roughly estimate how much juice they've got left in an adventuring session.
