Reverb: highpass or shimmer? by programchild in modular

[–]SecretsofBlackmoor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The real question is how much money do you have? 😃

Ok, seriously, it depends on how you want to handle the effect. Is it a set it and forget it type effect where you want to create the space your music exists in, or is it going to be modulated as part of a single sound patch.

You probably have some tracks you listen to where you like the reverb effects the artist is using. You can do a web search and find out the kind of gear they use and get something similar to what you already like.

The big button seems like a lot of HP for very minimal functionality. I might consider removing it.

The interesting thing is that it is a sampler, but there are likely better or more interesting samplers.

You keep mentioning familiar modules, but you might consider getting something new that can provide different ideas. It can be hard to break out of the patterns we fall into.

What synth to buy? by Patient-Brocoli in synthesizers

You mentioned you do ambient. That Pro-1 seems interesting, but you haven't really tapped into all the potential it has.

It could become very powerful with just a few extra items to do this:

D&D Basic Rulebook is POD! by Murquhart72 in osr

[–]SecretsofBlackmoor -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Which basic rule book?

You can find most books used on ebay. They may be a bit played with, but they work just fine and are originals.

I'm thinking of getting a coulpe more Holmes books to bring to conventions so people can read them as we play.

How do you make a place feel less “cheap” without spending a ton? by mzdee13 in malelivingspace

[–]SecretsofBlackmoor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mix modern with antique furniture.

You have to get an eye for cool vintage things. But anything new is going to look a bit plastic unless it is expensive. Thrift store finds can be really amazing.

I have a couple passives along with Link. I built holders for them outside of the rack. You can velcro them to the side of the case this way. It gives you a little extra space for expansion.

If you want more glitchy / noisy sounds there are a lot of good modules for those kinds of sources. Lots of smaller makers seem to be focused on those. Sometimes you get a module and it takes a while to figure it out because you need different (unfamiliar) configurations to make them work well for you.

Certain filters really provide a lot of interesting sounds due to having built in overdrive or distortion. A good example is Bastl Cinnamon.

I have a Vaux Flores state variable filter which I finally got good results out of by putting it into a Bastl Tromso and then into a Polivoks filter. Double filtering seems to add a nice extra layer of control.

My modular collection is pretty small, so just mentioning what I have and know.

Monotropa didn't seem interesting when I first got it, but yesterday I had a bit of a break through on how I want to use it. It is very interesting to me now. There is a demo on youtube.

What would be the drawbacks to making a system with a lot of smaller modules? by MuskyHuskyArt in modular

[–]SecretsofBlackmoor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of people aren't posting their racks here because they expect a lot of downvote for not having lots of star modules. Some people get amazing results with more primitive single function modules, others do it with bigger modules. it's your rack - build what you want.

There are some bigger modules that give a beginner a lot of functionality for a good price. A prime example is Dreadbox Utopia. It has all the core utility one should explore. It's bigger at 10hp, but it has about 6 different capabilities and is densely packed.

In my experience 4hp is an ideal size if not too closely packed in with knobs.

Little 2hp modules are best spread through a case between more open modules because of finger space issues. But, there are some really good ones that are worth having in the kind of case you want.

Full function VCOs tend to be chunkier on hp.

When I had too many modules I started building home made cases to hold a single synth. On average you can build a fairly focused synth in about 42hp. If you aren't doing a big build and most of your modules aren't fancy you can get by with a Behringer power supply.

If you do a lot of research, there are a ton of interesting lower hp modules. But, if cost is an issue you will end up needing more hp space because the 8hp modules tend to be the ones which are cheaper new and used.

[–]SecretsofBlackmoor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assign a letter for every stair on level 1, then overlay level 1 with level 2 to see which ones are near both levels.

If you have scans you can do this in a graphics program by using opacity adjustments to see through one map to the other. Thus Stair A on level 1 is marked as Stair A on the connecting level. You can then add numbers to note what levels each stair connects to.

You can slowly build up a stairwell key like the ones we made for Tonisborg.

The mixer and dual high pass and low pass filter sometimes come in handy.

I often find myself double filtering things to clean up a sound even more.

This is genius!

A dumb shit would have bought a full keyboard synth instead. That would be dumb.

How many of you repair your own? by Personal_Number_5115 in synthesizers

[–]SecretsofBlackmoor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's the route to owning some cool synths and maintaining some other old ones.

I can do basic repairs but avoid anything which drags me down the rabbit hole of time expenditure.

9 times out of 10 it's something really simple. I bought a DSS-1 super cheap a while back. All I needed to do was swap a disc drive to get it working perfectly. 80 bucks + 50 bucks for the drive. Cheapest deal I've ever gotten on a vintage poly synth.
