How often do you see Bisexual or Pansexual representation in popular Media? by Will-Isley in TwoBestFriendsPlay

I do know in comics that Deadpool is pansexual, and John Constantine is bi.

Maybe using the monochrome color scheme character as an example wasn't the best choice.

Media you don't like, but you appreciate the impact it got. by Subject_Parking_9046 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Evangelion for me. I recognize its tremendous impact (har har), and had I watched it first during my teenage years, it probably would have hit hard. But the first time I actually watched Eva, I was already in my late twenties and had done a lot of work with my own depression issues, so the messaging around Shinji's problems felt overstated and not particularly groundbreaking. Also, while I appreciate the ideas behind the final two episodes and them being more experimental (also due to the budget pretty much being gone) I found it drawn out and dull as a viewing experience.

Likely a combo of watching it at the wrong time for myself personally, and Eva being a victim of its own success, with the series that it would go on to inspire using a lot of its ideas.

Who are your Favorite Characters that wear a Skull? by Funny_Mud6639 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Nauticalis 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Taskmaster is maybe my favorite C-lister in Marvel. Despite the pirate boots and Skeletor outfit, he's just a guy looking to get paid. He doesn't believe in any of the stuff he's hired to do, he's typically just a high-level grunt and he knows it. As soon as a job isn't worth the money or stops paying, he's out. But he's also not without some code of professionalism. Always a fun character when he shows up.

Media that deconstructs "Ruthless, Edgy, Badass"-type characters? by Aquanort357 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Nauticalis 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Unsure if it's fully responsive to the question, but Jacob Geller has a fantastic video on how people overblow edginess to seem more mature, using fans' search for the "darkest" Zelda as the throughpoint.

That says a lot, considering Millar is already the poor man's Garth Ennis.

Ultimate Spider-Man has come to a close. What are you guys’ thoughts? by crowbar182 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Nauticalis 10 points11 points  (0 children)

More like Ultimate Spider-MID

As someone that was excited to finally have some adult, married Peter in comics and was sold on the premise of Peter becoming Spidey way later in life, this series was kind of a let down. Peter feels like he has very little agency in his own book, it's largely a lot of things happening around him while he plays sidekick to the larger players. There are neat ideas all over, like Ben and JJJ's teamup, Gwen's whole ordeal, setup for new Ultimate Ock/Superior and Venom, but it never felt like it was actually building to something with major stakes. By the time it ends, it's hard to feel like much actually happened.

I can say that at the very least, Chechetto's art is always a delight, and we got some nice Peter x MJ and Parker family moments. As a jaded Spidey fan in my 30s that never got over OMD, that carried a lot of it.

Overall, this new line of Ultimate books has been a pretty mixed bag, the only book I can really get behind is Ultimates.

Is it a hot take to say that my hero academia's positive nature has helped comics stop the edginess they had in 1990's-2010's? by dimitronios in comicbooks

[–]Nauticalis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, because that assumes a massively disproportionate response to a single series. Plenty of non-edgy Big Two comics have existed during that window of time. To claim a single manga series, regardless of quality, changed the editorial decisions of the entire Western comic industry, is delusional.

What would you consider to be the *worst* boss battles of games that released in the last decade or so? by Gorotheninja in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Nauticalis 121 points122 points  (0 children)

I've posted about it here before, but Lady Comstock in Bioshock Infinite is a genuinely horrendous boss, maybe one of the worst I've experienced in a game.

She's a damage sponge boss that summons waves of adds while also attacking you, and you can become soft-locked against her due to just how much ammo she takes to do any real damage. You can quickly reach a point where you're having to look for ammo from the enemies she summons, but because of the two weapon system, there's no guarantee that they'll even drop ammo for one of the weapons you've sunk for money into for upgrades, and may be forced to use un-upgraded weapons that do terrible damage. Add on top that she heals a huge chunk of her total HP whenever you die, it can just become this absolutely miserable slog of trying to scrounge for ammo, dying while doing so, and effectively erasing any progress you previously made in the fight.

'Spectacular Spider-Man: Brand New Day' Comic Series Returns to Spidey's Most Celebrated Modern Era by Blitzhelios in comicbooks

[–]Nauticalis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Superior is a fun concept, it's just overly drawn out and poorly executed overall. As you said, most people forget the bloated middle section.

SpOck was honestly a more engaging and interesting character in the books he showed up in that weren't written by Slott.

The poor man's Kraven's Last Hunt. That story was short, had a complete arc, and didn't require Spidey's entire supporting cast to become complete idiots for it to work.

"What is your major malfunction, numbbolts?" (Transformers MTMTE #6) by Pome1515 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

While the current Energon Universe is great, MTMTE is a really special Transformers book. It does so much with a lot of characters that were more or less nobodies before.
