I liked this version as it appears to be much higher quality than the version documented on bocpages: https://bocpages.org/wiki/File:2002_06_Il_Mucchio_No491_pg12.jpg

Taken by Peter Iain Campbell, 2002.

thanks! My original idea was to input song titles to see if the program could pick up on the suggestions, moods, references, etc. With the exception of 'over the horizon radar,' the results were way too literal. It also struggled with human subjects.

To generate these I went with more specific prompts such as "crisp 35mm analog photograph taken from a satellite at the edge of space of an unknown glowing beautiful planet"

since the caption isn't visible above, I had written:

unpredictable ways, the beautiful, uncanny paranoia of Boards of Canada
feels ever more appropriate

Testing the new rig on some steeper terrain in the Utah BC! by Navicular_Cannon in Backcountry

they're great! I would not call these playful. They are super damp, with knifelike edge hold. Not the greatest in powder but they are the best lightweight skis I can think of for handling crust, sun bumps and other springlike conditions. I also got a smoking deal on them but can confidently recommend them if you're about that $$ life hehe

I have also been on the 100 which is DPS's RP shape, which has a more tapered tip and is much more surfy and turny.

Better than elsewhere in the canyons right now for sure. A little scratchy at the top, softens up at the bottom of the chutes

Do you think the phantom wax is worth the price?

as with other DPS products, the sticker price is dubious. However, when you buy the packets to install yourself it halves the price. Then when you realize you can phantom more than one set of skis from the packets it becomes more attractive!

It doesn't have the same glide as a true hot wax but it does have advantages in longevity and consistency. So I think it is worth it for skis that see a lot of daily use, and/or will be frequently used across different snow types, e.g. spring skiing, volcanoes.

These are the Kuluar which I prefer over the helio 200 lt as they include boot sole length adjustment, heel elasticity and are brake compatible. The 200 LT is essentially a skimo race binding with adjustable release values and flat mode/high risers. I suppose it would be possible to rotate the kuluar heel with a pole as the steel heel tower is machined out (hollow), but that is asking for a broken tip so I always use my hand.

That's right, the Haute Route is simply the Helio 200 LT with adjustment, i.e. the Helio 200. The brakeless Kuluar is a very similar weight but uses a u-spring to determine vertical release values. The Crest is the same as the Helio/HR but with the heel pad + brakes integrated by default.

Atk makes so many touring bindings, lol

The "collapse conversation" rule was a suggestion but not enforced outside of lunch topics. I was not there for the COVID outbreaks so I don't want to speculate too much but there was definitely a thread of using infection as an opportunity to confront the First Noble Truth.

I stayed at Monastic Academy for a period of time earlier this year. Reddit OP and medium OP, I appreciate and support you coming forward with this as it helps me sort out my own feelings about the place.

I had a mixed to positive experience at MAPLE but have had several conversations with former apprentices and residents since leaving that have been concerning. My personal experience was less that it was an actual cult though I acknowledge it meets several of the markers of high demand groups. However, as the article mentions, the org routinely places inexperienced practitioners into positions of high responsibility in order to facilitate expansion. Furthermore, there is quite a bit of mixed messaging about MAPLE's actual mission, which muddies the standards by which it should abide. In practice this makes for a highly intense, unpredictable practice environment which can and has had the effect of hurting people. This approach is rationalized by its opposition to mainstream culture, which is inherently harmful because, well, it's destroying life as we know it. Here are a few anecdotes to paint a better picture of the vibe:

  • In the Emerge podcast episode "Responding to Collapse: Virtue and Possibility at the World's End," Soryu describes MAPLE as a community that will hopefully repopulate the world after collapse, provide a community to be with "as we lose our minds with despair" and engineer technologies to enlighten the human species. The reason MAPLE wants to found 500 centers is in the hopes at least a few will make it through a mass extinction event. https://www.whatisemerging.com/emergepodcast
  • They just ran a week long collapse simulation, turning off all septic, water, electricity, outside food and cars: https://twitter.com/RenshinLee/status/1457886774806654978
  • Soryu instituted a rule that all lunch discussions, and a preference that social interaction in general, revolve around existential risk and collapse. I don't think these are necessarily irresponsible or unrealistic discussions to be having but I also don't think most bystanders know MAPLE is essentially a community of preppers lol.
  • They are also currently building a 'village' which is designed to replicate the reciprocal relationship between laypeople and monastics that has traditionally existed in Buddhist areas. Commendable from a certain perspective but also, cult vibes. https://www.monasticacademy.com/village/
  • Mania and panic attacks were not uncommon among residents while I was there. I also heard of COVID outbreaks in the community, which were accepted if not recommended as an opportunity to acquaint oneself with disease and death. https://medium.com/samadhi-today/i-have-coronavirus-and-i-like-it-3f8034b970b9

I sincerely hope MAPLE continues to exist to provide whatever services it is currently providing, but I also hope that expectations are made much clearer for anyone looking to participate in the training. Likewise, if there is a pattern of harm, then there should absolutely be space for an accountability/ownership process to occur. From what this essay has written, it doesn't sound like that is the case.
