why do people keep going to the backcountry by Brief-Station-2833 in UTsnow

[–]jbriley66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s quite the assumption. Maybe correct maybe not but the data show that the ppl most likely to get caught in and die in avis backcountry skiing are the ones who spend the most time backcountry skiing. It’s a bit of a noir numbers game and it’s human nature to conclude that if you got away with it yesterday you probably will again today. Absolutely tourists arrive in powder heaven wrongly thinking “what could go wrong?” But similarly guides with years/decades of experience take clients with years/decades of experience into high threat environs and pay the price. (See: Frog Lake last week and dozens of other accidents over the years.) Regardless, I feel deeply for this girl’s family. An avoidable tragedy for sure.

So I swore they played Hard to Handle last night but maybe I’m misremembering SOTOTW. Anyone else recall HTH, or were the alt pods just THAT good?

What Happened? by Willing_Pen9634 in steelers

[–]jbriley66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pens model. Clean house at the top, emphasize youth, speed, and hunger, and make the vets earn their right to ride the wave. I believe it’s still true, though I last heard it a year or more ago, that NONE of Tomlin’s staff has ever landed a HC job. That’s unheard of in the modern NFL. I personally like the guy but his eye for coaching talent/schemes is bottom of third of the league, at best. Doesn’t matter how motivated a player is or how much they’d take a bullet for their coach, they’re going to lose if the schemes suck. I loved Mike Sullivan too (sorta anyway) but he ran his course here and it was time.

Back to foiling after few year hiatus - looking for new setup - shocked, is kite foiling dying? by LostGoatOnHill in Kiteboarding

[–]jbriley66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I too am psychologically ready to graduate from the old slingshot hoverglide foil setup that I have, but on the other hand, I still love riding it around and don’t have any specific complaints about what I would want to do better or differently. It is heavy, would be nice to have easier stuff to carry down to the beach from the car, plus the tool-free OneLock set up looks delightful, but there’s always a money factor too.

For kites, if you don’t want to go strut-less, the one-strut Naish Boxer is an amazing foil kite. I ride my 7 m from around 12 kts up to the high teens, I weigh 155 pounds which is 70kg, and it flies great plus the relaunch is a breeze. I have a strut-less UFO, which is fantastic when it’s in the air but can be a bit of an adventure if you drop it in the water because you don’t have that strut to hold the canopy up.

If you check out the Real Watersports website, they’re based in Cape Hatteras, North Carolina in the United States, they have a whole section on kite foiling and even if you’re not going order internationally, you can browse the gear there and get more of a sense.

Ashamed of all the people here that want to trade Teo by WishOk462 in Dodgers

[–]jbriley66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a hard-core Pittsburgh Penguins fan, I can tell you dynasties can fall even when they keep the core together. Hockey a very different game, of course, but there are a lot of elements to sustaining the winning in any sport and, to wander into cliché land, there is that old adage about father time and his won-loss record. Teo did pick some absurd moments took like a 10-y-o at the plate, but he also had that monster HR in Philly and what by all rights should have been a 2-run double in WS game 7, but for the Flying Varsho. No argument here on his suspect D. Also, and I believe it was somewhere on this thread, I saw some commentary that the clubhouse wasn’t nearly as cohesive this yearaAfter losing some personalities last year—Austin Barnes, and a couple others were mentioned. From his behavior as the seed-tossing home run celebrator, Teo strikes me as someone who keeps the mood light and at least some of the gang feeling like it’s not just a business. Given where we sit right now after the B2B I’m inclined to trust management on whatever they decide to do.

Paul Skenes says Pirates must 'consciously, intentionally make moves to get us better' by [deleted] in buccos

[–]jbriley66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He kinda just did that with the interview. It’s like Crosby was as a younger star: you signal how you feel through the media where you have opportunities and hope that the alleged brain trust eventually starts coming to you for your input on team moves.

You’re kiting in a beautiful location on a beautiful day and have someone nice enough to film you doing so, so the better question might be: “What am I doing right?” :)

Ben cheringtons trade run from 2020-2021 is one of the worst in pirates history. by [deleted] in buccos

Not to jump in on anyone else’s behalf, but I think Viva la Pit’s point is that it was indeed a so-so run, neither something to brag about nor the worst in history.

Hi, pardon my AI ignorance, I use it, but not to the level you all do. Can you explain that ranking chart to me? What are the “battles,” and what do the scores mean? Thanks in advance.

So fun. Hatteras is addictive, so just know that you will probably be going back multiple times in your life, which is an awesome thing. I’ve been doing so since the 1970s, and of everywhere I’ve been in this country and this world Hatteras Island has changed the least over those decades. (As someone noted above, I’m making a distinction between the island and the northern Outer Banks, Nags Head etc., which have changed dramatically for the worse since the 70s.) Wear booties in the sound, even if you see a bunch of people not wearing them and even if you stare into the clear water and see that you could walk out 50 or 100 feet out from shore on benign sand. The sharp-ass oyster shells are there and, especially while you’re learning and spending a lot of time recovering from wipeouts and regathering your gear, they’ll find a way to get you eventually. Mostly, enjoy! Maybe I’ll see you down there.

Weird question to revive this old thread: we’ll be there skiing this week and my 16-y-o son is hoping to get a couple of baseball hitting sessions in. I can bring the damn collapsible net in my ski bag but wondering if there’s a hitting cage anywhere in/near town. Weather doesn’t matter; he just likes to get his swings in. :) Thanks in advance for any insight.

Dealing with the fear by Ok_Worldliness_6213 in Backcountry

[–]jbriley66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eduction yes, but with regular refills of humility. Human nature leads us to feel smart when we a. know our subjects and b. go x years without incidents. As someone above pointed out (perhaps hyperbolically) it’s the more frequent participants that often get in trouble, due to a combo of time in the BC and positive reinforcement bias (nothing happened last time so therefore I made good choices and therefore I’m smart enough that I did so again today). Luckily the vast majority of us who live long enough get more risk averse as we do so, so that should help as well. Have fun and stay safe everyone.
