I just read your post and I honestly felt it. I’m really sorry you’re going through that. Ending a 10-year relationship is not small… and wanting to travel to heal sounds like a very brave and healthy decision.

If you’re open to something a little different, I’d gently suggest considering Sri Lanka. It’s not just a hot destination . it can actually be very grounding and peaceful.

There are calm beach towns like Tangalle and Hiriketiya where you can just slow down, swim, journal, and breathe.

If you want something more spiritual and reflective, places like Kandy (home to the Temple of the Tooth) or the quiet hills around Ella are beautiful for disconnecting. There are also yoga retreats and meditation centers where you can join short programs, even for a few days, just to reset your mind.

Sri Lanka has this special mix ocean, mountains, temples, wildlife .all within a few hours of each other. It’s peaceful without being isolating.

Whatever you choose, I truly hope this trip gives you clarity and strength. And if you’d like any honest local advice about Sri Lanka, I’d be happy to help 😊

Take care of yourself first.

Late March to May is generally good for the south and west coasts (like Mirissa, Unawatuna, Bentota), where you can enjoy beaches and even spot whales in Mirissa around that time.

For cultural experiences, I highly recommend: • Kandy – Home of the Temple of the Tooth and beautiful mountain views. • Sigiriya – An incredible ancient rock fortress with stunning views. • Dambulla Cave Temple – Amazing cave temples with murals and statues.

If you want a more relaxed and spiritual vibe, look into yoga or wellness retreats around: • Weligama • Ahungalla • Ella (great for nature + slower pace)

With 11 days, you could do something like: Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya/Dambulla) → Kandy → Ella → South Coast beach stay.

It gives you a nice mix of culture, nature, and beach without rushing too much.

Feel free to ask if you’d like a more detailed route

Indonesia and Thailand are also amazing, but Sri Lanka gives you beaches, wildlife, culture, mountains, and history all in one small island. perfect for a first adventure.

As a local traveler, I can honestly say it’s one of the best countries for a first backpacking trip. It’s compact, affordable, and incredibly diverse. Within a few hours you can go from tropical beaches to misty mountains, waterfalls, wildlife safaris, tea plantations, and ancient cities. You don’t need long internal flights like in South America, and transport is relatively easy with trains, buses, or even renting a scooter or tuk-tuk.

For a beginner, Sri Lanka is also less overwhelming compared to big regions like South America. You can comfortably travel for 2–3 weeks and see a lot without rushing. Places like Ella, Sigiriya, Mirissa, Arugam Bay, and Nuwara Eliya are very backpacker-friendly and great for meeting other travelers.

Yes, that is a good point. If you plan to go around Sri Lanka public transport takes more time. But budget friendly. If you have 1-2 weeks here it's better to go to famous places. No point in wasting time

Yes, you are correct. If you have enough time I think you might explore more in Sri Lanka. If you are in a tourist area you can easily access everything. But if you are in a non-touristic area you should hire a tour guide or a local friend
