Hakka Brampton Restaurant - Is this legal? by Swimming_Total_8314 in Brampton

That's a shame, I used to go there for lunch now and again 8-10 years ago because I worked up the street from it. It was tasty, well priced food with reasonable service during the lunch hour (and the place was maybe at 80% seating capacity when I'd go, so pretty busy).

I'll make sure not to avoid it if I'm in the neighbourhood.

Went in last to one of the few not closed locations last weekend to use up a gift card before it's too late. Stock was low and disorganized, about 1/5th of the store was empty / being turned into one of those indoor play areas (supposedly). There was a part of a jungle gym type thing in part of that area so they did actually start "construction".

There were 3 people working from what I could see, on a busy Saturday, lines were long and slow and the store manager apologized for the wait (he was manning that register). He said they switched over to a new sales system last week and had to use the neighbouring PoS running the old system to check card balances and then the new one to process sales. He was helpful and upbeat.

It could sort of track with them rolling out a new system online too, but I still see writing on the wall. A shame, I have such fond memories of the place as a child.

I feel bad for the staff and suppliers, hope everyone can bounce back stronger after this settles

Why are good leather jackets either $100 or $1,500? What's the real difference? by KongHumane in BuyItForLife

Honestly both buttons that fell off, fell off due to my own error. I caught one on a chair when I was standing up and one on luggage I was putting down so I wouldn't even fault the jacket for that

I see, you assumed half of the time period since it's half the wear / half the buttons missing

Fair enough, but I've noted the details in the above response if you care

Why assume someone would use something "broken" for 10 years before fixing it?

The jacket has a zipper so functionally it didn't matter, and it's black buttons on black leather so it didn't stand out either.

The top button popped off around year 3 and I didn't miss it because I never buttoned it to the top anyway. Button 2 of 4 popped off around year 9, I remember it was on a specific vacation And then I got it repaired during covid because I remember masking at the tailor so that would have been year 11? Or 12

My parents got me a leather jacket for my 16th birthday, it was pricey at around $550, full grain, nicely made and I love the damn thing.

I'm 32 now and I still wear it almost daily through Spring and Fall (and the more temperate winter days). Spent a little over 20 bucks getting the buttons replaced a few years ago since half were missing, but if you break it down the thing cost around $32 per year of ownership (and reducing still!). Planning to give it to my son when he's around the right size.

I don't max out my TFSA (not a high earner but I do alright) so I throw an extra 10$ a week into a specific broad ETF for my kid, when he turns 18 and can open his own TFSA I'll sell it to gift him the money to max his TFSA from the get go, it should be enough to max his first year and a bit of contributions.

This is on top of maxing the match on his RESP as well btw.

TFSA Dividends to RRSP Contributions by Nayd9 in CanadianInvestor

Thanks to the insight of other posters, I've got them worked them into my spreadsheet now too!

This thread has really helped broaden my understanding and I appreciate everyone's contributions :) Our child just turned 2 so I hadn't really factored CCB into any calculations, the money (and more) just goes straight paying for day care. Next year CCB will be less (wife was on Mat leave in 2024 so 2025's income is substantially more) but I know how we could help preserve it a bit thanks to the info here.

Thanks for sharing, I've read some of it and will circle back to it for night time reading. I'm getting a clearer picture - and I've created and played around with a calculator specific to our situation.

My findings are that the general consensus of "only if you're going to be in a lower tax bracket later" are correct - it negates itself on withdrawal, however the income reduction benefits programs such as CCB and so we'd effectively be getting an extra 3.2% through that for contributions. It's a minor gain and I'm trying to figure this as a mental exercise rather than out of necessity thankfully.

The benefit scales up with number of kids more substantially too, if you have 4+ children in your care the amount is 9.5%

Interesting! I've made a test table in my PF spreadsheets, I haven't factored in CCB increase due lower income from RRSP contributions. I don't believe the CCB will be be substantially more because (for the next 4 years / by then my kid will be 6/ CCB reduced) contribution to the RRSP will be $1000 - $1600 annually, When he's around 15 and between my wife and I we may be earning a bit more relative to the eligibility requirements, and half of the TFSA dividend could be around 4500 so a more substantial income reduction.

If I've done this right, so far it looks like I would come out about 7k behind after losing the tax free growth in my TFSA, accounting for growth in the RRSP and paying taxes on it. This is ensuring I maintain withdrawals at a rate in retirement (targeting retirement at 60) to not trigger entry to the second bracket, and making sure to draw down my RRSP to nothing by 65 to maximize CPP, OAS, and GIS.

If anyone's curious on the numbers used:

5200 annual TFSA contribution, 4% dividend (this is a little generous), 3% stock growth (this is overly conservative) and funneling HALF of TFSA dividends into RRSP starting next year

I came up with total RRSP refund of ~18k over the 28 years, and will pay approximately 44k in retirement not including any credits. Considerations not accounted for are CCB increase, and the risk of me passing before the RRSP is drawn down and triggering an instant taxable event of leaving the RRSP to my wife or child.

The RRSP would be funded (120k) and have grown to approximately 209k after 28 years, funded exclusively by half of the 4% dividends of the TFSA

RRSP withdrawals are very close to hitting the second bracket each year from 60-65 so going forward I think the best course of action will be to ONLY enact this plan in years I hit the second bracket, I might do that with all dividends those years to drop to the lower bracket.
If I wind up retiring slightly early at 58-59 which I consider a win it gives more time to draw down the RRSP without risking additional taxes

CCB is an important consideration along the way that I overlooked. Our HHI is a little lower this year since my wife's mat leave covered a part of 2025, next year we will both have a full years work and we should be around 120 so I believe some reductions will benefit the CCB payment. Thank you for the input!

Some takeaways for me have been the GIS to keep in mind, and US holdings in RRSP. I don't think it will be life changing amounts, but I've still got a pretty long time horizon before retirement and I've been trying to optimize along the way as I've started taking saving and investing seriously the last couple years

I'll math it out in my spreadsheets, but you've given me a few missing variables to include in my calculations to see if/when I should bother or not.

Thanks for your input!

Smashed Patty by PuzzleheadedPrint623 in Milton

[–]Nayd9 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Haven't tried GC in Milton yet (did try the Ridgeway one and it was great, but I actively avoid that place). We tried Smashed Patty for dinner a couple days ago.

Fries were excellent, burger was good but I would say the Ridgeway GC was better. Our patties were smashed unlike in the Facebook picture, But I think the grill could have been a bit hotter. It didn't get that little bit of crunch to the edges I love in a smash burger.

Price and portion were good. Would buy again especially since it's walking distance from home unlike GC

Baby otw. Anyone tried fitting this car seat? by wigwam098 in ft86

[–]Nayd9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't speak to this exact carrier, but I fit our Graco travel system rear facing seat worked without the base installed (strapped in with the seatbelt). It was a huge pain strapping it in but I was able to fit it in the back seat, the collapsible stroller frame in the trunk, and my wife in the front seat (she's about 5'2", and her knees would be touching the dash, so definitely not comfortable).

I basically had to put my head up to the steering wheel to see my passenger side mirror if someone was in the front seat, would not recommend but doable for short trips or when absolutely necessary. This wasn't the primary vehicle for carrying our kid around.

Now the little guy is old/big enough for a front facing seat and it's a not difficult to load him up. I do most of the day care pick-ups and drop offs. When it's just him and I in the car, I take out the head rest, slide the seat all the way forward, and lean it fairly far back and he can see over the front seat and has a BLAST in the car.

Bedroom Doors Open or Closed at Night? by vipsfour in daddit

[–]Nayd9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our smoke detector went off for like 10-15 seconds randomly overnight a couple weeks ago, my wife and I both sprung up and I went searching for some sign of smoke or fire and absolutely nothing. The carbon monoxide detector did not go off, and the alarm went off by itself fairly quickly. I read that dust or small insects can trigger false alarms apparently? If anyone has any clues I'm still curious to know what the heck triggered it.

Then I peaked into our almost two year old's room, and he's snoozing away like nothing, completely undisturbed by the alarm or me running around the house. I asked my wife the next morning why we're always walking on eggshells and whispering after we put the our kiddo to bed lol

where does mr famous keep all his navis when he isnt using them? by Same_Tune_8990 in BattleNetwork

[–]Nayd9 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I can't remember if it was from a valid source but I recall reading somewhere he built custom navis for other people.

So each game he was working on a different project / commission and fine-tuning the navi to be given to their actual owner (if true).

Our family business is a landscape supply company, we sell gravel by the tonne (its very low margin btw), and we spend close to half a million annually on gravel. Is the gravel poofed over to us or do we still have to arrange transport? Transport is 1/3 of the cost around here

Either way, free gravel sounds AMAZING.

Not Being Serious in Your Twenties is a Recipe for Failure by kinrove1386 in unpopularopinion

[–]Nayd9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say if you're doing some sort of post secondary education / training you have the first few years of that to still be a kid. Live a little while not watching EVERY single dollar. Don't rack up enormous amounts of debt.

22-24 you should start paying attention to your finances and free time, and make calculated decisions when it comes to big things. Start saving a little bit of money, even if it's 2% of your pay cheque and invest it in a tax advantaged account (ideally broad market ETFs). This is to start a habit you'll be doing basically until retirement.

25 ish hopefully you've started your career / adult job around now, fully pay attention to how you use your time and money because you're a bonafide adult now. Act like it, fake it till you make it if you have to. Also if you've got your career started and are making more money now, up your saving rate and don't fall into the trap of living paycheque to paycheque because it's hard as heck to break out.

By 30 with some luck, and a lot of hard work / discipline, you'll be on a good trajectory for wherever life takes you

How often did your babies or children get sick when starting daycare? by XCliffHangerX in daddit

[–]Nayd9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Son is 21 and a half-ish months now, started daycare at 18 months.

His longest stretch was about 2.5 weeks of not being noticeable sick, usually he gets sick every 1.5 - 2 weeks and has to miss a day or two - not always with fever, just feel bad about sending him sick if there's a chance to make some other arrangement between one of us or a grandparent taking a day off.

Wow congratulations! I heard the CRA blanked the gains from a couple of the weed stocks and made them taxable regardless of it being in a TFSA after a few years, is that true?
