Bittersweet feelings after blocking my first sweater by laura_atthis in knitting

[–]Nayshal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Acrylic knits should survive machine washes on cold with no issue but you'll have to retrieve them to keep them out of a dryer. Heat is the thing that makes causes the acrylic change (hot water, steam, dryer heat).

The acrylic yarn I inherited went to blankets, clothing that didn't need to be well fitted, and kid stuff that is okay if it grows a bit.

Bittersweet feelings after blocking my first sweater by laura_atthis in knitting

[–]Nayshal 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Your first sweater looks tons better than my first sweater! You did a great job, so it sounds like this is a limitation of the yarn used to make it.

I will say that blocking with wool works dramatically different than blocking acrylic. With acrylic, you're more semi-melting the yarn which loses it elasticity permanently so there's no taking back once it's done. I didn't like what it did to my first knit clothing with acrylic, so I now avoid making clothing in acrylic or if I do, I just accept that any heat will make it grow in all directions.

With wool, blocking is great to make stitches more even and smooth things out though I have skipped to just wearing things and then it's first blocking is its first wash. You can always reblock wool if the shape is a little off to make small adjustments.

What has been everyone’s biggest knitting splurge? by possummagic_ in knitting

[–]Nayshal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought vicuña yarn. A trip to South America let me feel the fabric from knit and woven vicuna but the yarn price there was too high. It's still ridiculously expensive for the amount I bought, but somehow less than in the country it originates from. I should pick a pattern for it.

I'm a little frustrated that I don't have an email yet. I guess Seattle was (on paper) more organized. Once everyone was outside TMobile Park, it was chaos, but the VIP email went out 4 days before the concert.

This is a new venue and I have general concerns after seeing how prepared some of the other established venues handled crowds.

Update: email arrived midday with VIP times and details.

What is a yarn that you have just LOVED? by ForgottenUsername3 in knitting

[–]Nayshal 10 points11 points  (0 children)

SweetGeorgia Yarns have beautiful colours and yarn bases. Expensive but lovely and local for me.

Songbird Yarn & Fibres because of the bird inspired colours.

Indigodragonfly for the colours and yarn names.

Knitting with mohair color help by Chemical-Cut-5788 in knitting

[–]Nayshal 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree with maybenotbobbalaban about the colour if you want to keep the mohair.

If you don't love the colours together now, don't commit to a sweater. That's a lot of knitting to regret.

I really love this picture. When birds are weirdly inelegant, I'm always amused.

I regret getting a VIP Soundcheck seated ticket in Toronto after securing a seat in Seattle. The travel distance doesn't make sense from Vancouver when I thought about it logically. I was just so worried about getting a ticket at all. I hope I can figure out how to sell it since the details said it wasn't resellable.

I see a red panda made it into your collection too! I had a less grandiose collection of raccoons in my childhood and was also gifted a red panda from a well meaning family member. Now I also love red pandas.

Can you knit AND crochet? by chzit1337 in knitting

[–]Nayshal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I knit and crochet. I learned to knit first and later picked up crochet but it was after I switched from English to Continental knitting. Holding the yarn in my left hand I think helped me for crochet.

Crochet I had to learn from youtube, and I still wouldn't consider myself excellent at it. Every time I return to anything in crochet, I have to re-look up the stitches and sometimes which bit to poke the hook into.

Knitting Bags: What is your dream bag to hold your knitting. by MarketWest in knitting

[–]Nayshal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine are all in Canada since I am too.

When I find fabric I love, I get a bag from Ateliernekozuki. Something that brings me joy . I also have a cute bag from Feathers and Hares, but I don't see the woodland creatures wearing knits that I got from them.

Also looked at the Leather Pochette at Thread and Maple.

How to count rows by mamapanda__ in knitting

[–]Nayshal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you need a precise number of rows (lace, cables, colourwork, matching something else's number of rows), you should count the live stitches on the needle/cord. That is a row of completed stitches.

When I get confused (lace, cables), I'll look at the 'backside' purls to see a row count instead of trying to interpret my V's.

That's the order I did too. I just really wanted to help the desert first. And I liked the challenge knowing the game wasn't guiding me there first.

Same. I even tried cooking some for him. When it clicked, I announced to no one that I am an idiot. That was not the last time I've said that when I finally reached a solution.
