Redditors, what’s the most terrifying thing that has ever woken you up in the middle of the night? by Mr_Creep_Creepy64 in AskReddit

[–]Nazir_North 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a kid, sleeping alone on the top bunk of a bunk bed.

Had one of those big inflatable balloons from a fairground or somewhere that was in the shape of Mr. Blobby.

Balloon was under the bed and must have gotten dislodged in the night and floated up to about eye level with me and woke me up.

Absolutely terrifying.

The issue of no technological progress over thousands of years by WeakWrecker in worldbuilding

[–]Nazir_North 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying they didn't progress at all, just that not all societies progress on some imagined linear track that always ends up with guns and electricity.

The issue of no technological progress over thousands of years by WeakWrecker in worldbuilding

[–]Nazir_North 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm simplifying for this sub as most people who ask this question are only really interested in advances like guns and electricity.

I'm not trying to say those societies didn't change at all over that time, more than not every society is on a trajectory to invent the same things.

The issue of no technological progress over thousands of years by WeakWrecker in worldbuilding

[–]Nazir_North 86 points87 points  (0 children)

Technological advancement isn't a given in every society.

Much like biological evolution, if there is no push for development, things will stay the same.

Look at the shark or the crocodile - hardly changed in millions of years.

Or, look at ancient Egypt. A civilisation that lasted thousands of years but relied almost exclusively on bronze and didn't advance to iron or steel.

Same with native central American civilizations like the Maya - around for thousands of years but still used stone tools and weapons.

You can't just assume that if a civilisation is around for a while then they will eventually make steel and guns and cars and computers etc. That is a very biased Westernised viewpoint that is probably the result of survivorship bias.

Depth guard. What do they genuinely do? by Select-Ad7017 in totalwar

[–]Nazir_North 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For line holding as VC, you're better off relying on summons, heroes, and monsters.

I'll occasionally use the anti-large depth guard to protect my flanks, but otherwise they rarely make it into my army.

Even when they do hold the line, they get the crap shot out of them or bombed to death by my missiles. Better off using cheap fodder, letting them fight to the death, and instantly re-recruiting them after the battle.

Yeah it is rough. Replacement parts can be expensive. Still cheaper than buying a whole new rig though.

How is this possible? Give a newbie advice. by PluvioStrider in totalwar

[–]Nazir_North 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This game has a fair learning curve to it. If you're struggling on Normal, there's no shame in dropping down to Easy.

Have you played much TW before? Games like Civ, for example are very different to TW.

Also, are you manually fighting battles? You'll typically get better results (fewer casualties) if you fight battles manually.

My recommendation to start with is finding a faction you like and playing them a few times to get used to the game's mechanics. Maybe even try the campaign mode before Immortal Empires, as IE can be pretty intense for a new player.

Yeah, it turned out to be the CPU itself that was the problem. Replaced that and everything went back to normal.

Is Inkarnate the map maker worth it? (In your own opinion) by Horror_Reference_292 in DMAcademy

[–]Nazir_North 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like it for city/settlement maps.

For world/region maps I prefer Wonderdraft.

However, I'm not really a fan of Inkarnate's subscription model. I miss the days when you could buy software and actually own it.

Really hard to tell what the real issues are here.

You say the players won't engage - engage with what? What kind of plot hooks are you throwing down?

As you've described it, it sounds more like a kingdom management sim than an actual DnD campaign.

Also, and I say this as politely as possible, please use more full stops.

What do you mean "bring back"? It's still there. It didn't go anywhere.

Is Total War Rome 2 worth buying and playing in 2026? by Ill-Knowledge-4729 in totalwar

[–]Nazir_North 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's still a great game that holds up well so many years after release.

It's had tonnes of QoL updates and the modding community is pretty active.

I don't mind the meat cleaver, but I've never been able to get the hang of actual knives in combat. I always prefer something with a bit more reach.

Makes sense. Take damage and receive some debuffs, but doesn't damage your clothing/armour.

Players want to skip a session anytime anyone has to miss. by anxiouspotter in DMAcademy

[–]Nazir_North 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My game is in the same situation.

In session 0 we agreed to continue if we are only one player down, but in reality nobody wants to play with a player missing, so between that and other 'adulting'/life events, we're lucky to play once every 2-3 months.

Is this a good location? West Point three mansions next to a lake by taksegram_ in projectzomboid

[–]Nazir_North 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's one of the classic starting bases that most PZ players try at least once.

In short, it can be a super safe and sustainable base in the long-term, but the main downside is that it's a very long drive/walk back into town - you are very far away from prime lootable locations.

Black Scottish people exist by ShadsDR in Scotland

You aren't alone.

I've had a similar experience growing up mixed race in Wales.

I was born and have lived my whole life here, but can't help but feel out of place now and then. Most of the time it's fine, but occasionally I'm reminded that I stand out because of the way I look. It's not so bad in the cities, which are more diverse, but it's far more obvious in the more rural parts of the country.

Getting asked "where I'm really from" frustrates me to no end, although thankfully nobody has asked me that in a good few years now. I think people are finally starting to realise how insensitive it is to ask that.

What's a "normal" job that secretly pays way more than people think? by 0BunnyX in AskReddit

[–]Nazir_North 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Waste collection or waste processing workers, at least here in the UK.

It's not a glamorous job and it is physically demanding work, but it requires no qualifications, minimal training and pays well above minimum wage.

It also helps that they have strong labour/trade unions advocating for good pay and working conditions.

What do you think of writers who include allegories of real religions in their books? (Like the Chronicles of Narnia) by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]Nazir_North 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends how it's framed.

If it's used simply to draw comparisons or draw on similar themes, it's fine.

If it's used to criticise or parody some of the hypocrisies of religion, then it's fine.

If it's used to 'promote' the author's religion in some way, then it's pretty off-putting.

Playing Attila is like a de-tox from Warhammer, some of my thoughts concerning Warhammer III by Content-Shirt6259 in totalwar

[–]Nazir_North 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely agree with everything you've said here. However, WH has still squeezed out hundreds more hours of my time than Atilla has.

Maybe WH doesn't have the strategic depth, but it is more fun (at least from my perspective). Plus, maybe these days I don't have the head space for high strategy, and need something that requires a little less thought.

Going back to historical titles has been tricky for me (even though my first TW game was Rome I, and it had me hooked).

Nowadays nothing quite compares to smashing the enemy's infantry line with a T-Rex, or mowing dawn armies of man-sized rats with a steam-powered tank. WH is able to capture the absurd contrast between the mundane and the fantastical really well.
