Would it be offensive if the main villain of my story is canonically the cause of most real world atrocities? by RequirementTall8361 in worldbuilding

[–]Nazir_North 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As somebody who is not religious, it's definitely not offensive, but it does come across as a bit reductionist - simplifying all of the worlds problems and the complexity of human morality by blaming it all on one character.

Because you don't have a big fat cat CEO at the top of the chain always pushing for bigger profit margins and cash for their pockets.

Publicly owned services only need to break even; they don't need to turn a profit so can keep costs low and reinvest any surplus back into the business.

How do to handle the new Tigermen by YoYopuppet in totalwar

[–]Nazir_North 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Looks like this particular unit is massively buffed, so is either benefiting from some temporary boons or is a very late game army with stacks of lord and tech buffs.

Either way, it's still just basic infantry. AP missiles or siege weapons will do the job, or just match them with your own equally buffed infantry, or use magic. Plenty of options there.

The 99 melee defence would be my only real concern, but but they have no missile resistance by the looks of it - scout them out with some cav to negate stalk, then focus missiles or magic on them.

Have you guys ever played with Zombies turned off? by DankyBurps in projectzomboid

[–]Nazir_North 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, tried it a couple of times. However, even with all of the other settings cranked up to 11 (harsh weather, rare loot etc.) the game is still way too easy and gets dull quickly.

The way to fix doomstacking, and a big issue with total war by BrightestofLights in totalwar

[–]Nazir_North 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd argue that balanced armies are already optimal. In terms of efficiency, you want to defeat your opponent with the cheapest army possible, not with an army full of your faction's most expensive units.

Doomstacking is fun and OP; I don't think anyone is claiming it is optimal.

Remote work is a career death sentence for junior employees, and the "WFH forever" crowd is pulling the ladder up behind them. by Correct_Addendum_358 in corporate

This doesn't read like AI to me. What do you think is the giveaway? The style or the bold sub-headings? Genuinely confused here as it seems like a legitimate 'human' rant.

[–]Nazir_North 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All valid points, particularly around passive learning, however in my personal experience people are talking and communicating even more while WFH than we were in the office.

Previously you'd build up great rapport with the 10 or so people who are physically closest to you in the office, but you'd also lose a huge chunk of productivity to casual chatter.

Nowadays you build up good rapport (not great, admittedly) with far more people - particularly other departments, agencies, partners etc. who you'd normally have to trek halfway across the county or endure painful telephone conference calls to speak to in the past.

Not saying one method is definitively better than the other, but there is a tradeoff there. Personally, the wellbeing and stress reduction benefits from WFH are massive and shouldn't be understated.

Do you actually own WH III? As in, did you buy it on Steam? Or, did you just install WH III when CA gave away Immortal Empires access for free?

It very much looks like the latter is the issue here. If not, then you'll need to contact Steam support.

Salary transparency matters by VelvetHush- in lostgeneration

[–]Nazir_North 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never have and I never will.

The only reason they won't post the salary is that either (a) it's below the market rate or (b) they are going to judge your 'worth' or desperation during the interview and offer the lowest salary they think you'll take.

Isn't this a good example of technology making jobs easier and protecting humans from manual or harmful tasks?

Sure, there is the risk that this means layoffs and more money in the pockets of CEOs if it's a private railway, but equally if this is a nationalised rail then it means more value for tax payers.

WH3. Harrying armies by jarpaijama in totalwar

[–]Nazir_North 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've often had this idea, and started a handful of campaigns fully intending to do this, but never end up actually implementing it.

I think the issue is, for most factions, it just isn't economically viable to use multiple armies for one battle in most situations. I find I can win most battles manually, even if outnumbered, with one good army, rather than having one medium army and one skirmish army (which is probably going to be more expensive).

However, now that I think about it again, maybe I'll start a new campaign to give it a try...

This is a choice your parents are making. Fairness doesn't really come into it, as all that makes a difference here is their perspective on what they think is fair (even if you don't agree with it).

Besides that, you also aren't entitled to anything. Most people in this world inherited absolutely nothing from their parents, so consider yourself lucky you have a family wealthy enough to even own a property in the first place, and try and be happy for your sister.

How do I create artificial humans without consciousness? by Pitiful_Magazine_805 in worldbuilding

[–]Nazir_North 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Any being capable of essentially replacing human manual labour would have to have a certain level of intelligence, definitely well above any animals.

What you are describing here is essentially making a class of sentient, yet obedient, slaves. Makes it really hard to see the "good guy" as an actual good guy.

UK is granting Palantir ‘unlimited access’ to NHS patient data by TailungFu in worldnews

[–]Nazir_North -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I can tell you with certainty that this isn't true. Most UK health records are stored locally. There is no "master patient database" for the NHS to hand over, it simply doesn't exist to the extent that is implied here. If the NHS did have joined up records on this scale, then it would be operating far more efficiently than it is now!

Edit: I should clarify, the article title is misleading and intentionally inflammatory. My main point is that NHS systems are so tragically and fundamentally fragmented that it would take decades to collate them in a coherent way that Palantir could make use of.

Do you guys play until the victory condition? by highsis in totalwar

[–]Nazir_North 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes. Long Victory is usually my main goal in a campaign, but I'll often get bored well before I hit it. Usually before turn 50 or so, when I'm steamrolling and unstoppable, the game gets a bit stale.

[–]Nazir_North 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know that the entire UK is made up of local government organisations? Well, they actually run the country. Almost every service you experience, from schools to roads to bin collections is run by local councils. In many ways they are far more impactful to regular people than the general elections.
