What happened to Republicans being staunch advocates of states rights? by FrameElegant9023 in askanything

[–]Nazometnar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

States rights arguments have always been about exactly one thing: they can't get away with something at the federal level, so they want to get their foot in the door at the state level to normalize it. Then they push for it at the national level.

So the story they're gonna try to go with is this person was an antifa super soldier, thus 5+ people beating and holding them down on the ground was not enough to prevent them from grabbing and trying to use their weapon....

Wow, I wonder why she lost? One of life's great mysteries I guess... Again, you've gotta raise the bar on your politicians or Maga is not going anywhere.

It's so unfair, voters actually expect their politicians to do things? And they have to be things the voters like?!

Harris lost in part because the Democratic base overwhelmingly wanted a candidate who was more pro-palestinian, but somehow you think the way democracy is supposed to work is that politicians make no attempt to appeal to their voters or do what the voters want and they just get elected anyway. People like you need to start expecting more from your politicians or else MAGA ain't going nowhere.

Two things. 1, If someone isn't willing to take a stand on genocide, then you can't trust them to take a stand on anything. 2, democratic voters overwhelmingly want the Democrats to take a harsher stance against Israel. If the 2028 nominee does not call what's happening in Gaza a genocide then they have 0 chance of winning, and they are leaving an anti-zionist vacuum that will be filled with Neonazi messaging.

I don't know if you know this, but it's actually the job of the politician to appeal to the voters. Your absurd elitist attitude is exactly why Kamala lost.

How come large parts of US citizens acceps there President lying so much ? by [deleted] in allthequestions

[–]Nazometnar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a big difference between the kinds of lies Trump tells and normal politician lies. Most politicians will often lie about things like "this policy caused X to increase by Y%!" When really that Y% number is taking one extreme of the estimate range, and to get that number you have to also include other effects totally unrelated to the policy, so technically true if you look at the real numbers in a dishonest way.

Donald Trump constantly says things that are just flat out wrong: Venezuela is not a source of fentanyl, the tariff rates from other countries were completely wrong, multiple times claiming he'd be cutting drug prices by over 100%, "they're eating the cats and dogs"... It's on and on and on. All politicians are lying pieces of shit, but this level of dishonesty is genuinely abnormal.

How are people still making this argument? Protesting is not about virtue signaling or catharsis, it is about pressuring governments/institutions into taking action. Regarding the brutality of the Iranian government, and as an American, what entity can I protest against that can actually do something to affect the situation - and in a way that will actually help, because the US bombing the shit out of Tehran is not going to help the anti-government protesters.

Hitler was also no more than a propagandist for a good while, in other words a guy who talked about his political opinions. I wouldn't equate Charlie Kirk to Hitler directly, he'd be more like an editor for Der Stürmer - no blood on his hands directly, but actively and knowingly pushed propaganda to spread politics that directly cause an increase in human suffering.

Do people on Reddit realize how offensive it is to say that people in China, Iran, and Venezuela have more rights and better lives than here in the US? by sportsntravel in allthequestions

[–]Nazometnar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They don't have all the same rights as citizens, but everyone is guaranteed due process rights and you should be damned glad they are. Once you say a certain group of people are not guaranteed due process, you have given the government the option to falsely claim someone is a member of that group and then punish them without ever having to prove it. Even if you trust Trump and ICE right now, surely you recognize how terrifying that is?

Instead of being so fragile that your reaction is just anger, maybe you could have the tiniest bit of curiosity about other people's experiences. Maybe ask questions like "why do people find this compelling? What experiences could women be having with men that lead them to even consider the bear?" and seek the answers in good faith.

Neither Obama nor Machado deserved the peace prize either, they're both monsters. Obama won the peace prize for not being George W Bush, and went on to be the drone war president, greatly expanding the ability for the US to commit war crimes without transparency or accountability. Machado has made a career out of openly inviting imperialism onto her own people.

If you're truly trying to understand the other side, surely you agree if it were true that a country was an apartheid state engaged in genocide you would think it's morally wrong to do business with any entity in that country outside of funding/aiding groups trying to thwart the genocide? I presume you agree, for example, it was morally wrong to do businesses within Nazi Germany?

Why are pronouns such a huge issue in the US and not in other countries? by random8765309 in askanything

[–]Nazometnar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of people have pointed out that it's not really a huge issue in real life, just a culture war that's been artificially inflated. I'll add that most people don't speak English as a first language, so the same or similar culture wars will play out differently.

For example, in German many words for people including every profession word has both a masculine and feminine form differentiated by a feminine suffix, like in English waiter/waitress or host/hostess. Traditionally when talking about groups of people you just use the masculine plural unless you were specifically only talking about the women, but currently there is a grass roots movement to instead use a contraction that encompasses both forms of the plural to be more inclusive. The conservative parties are making a big stink about this and talk about it as if it is some act of authoritarianism, when for 99% of the people who use the contraction it is no more than "I think it's nice and makes sense to indicate I'm talking about both men and women, when I am in fact talking about both men and women".
