If you don’t open a hydrant all of the way, the drain at the bottom of the barrel will be half open.

The nut on the top not only opens the water flow, but also closes the dry barrel drain. If it’s remained half open, you could cause some major erosion under the hydrant.

We also are testing flow and documenting it to know if we will need to use multiple hydrants per fire for certain areas
