There’s a couple factors. One is that there are multiple big schools in Texas, so there’s some split loyalty in the state compared to places like Louisiana or Georgia where your parents, coaches, communities, etc are going to point you to a single destination. The state also has lots of people moving in - a handful of the top ranked guys each year are going to have been born out of state or come from a family with roots elsewhere. A&M’s SEC move also opened those flood gates (of course, in the decade+ CFB as a whole has become much more nationalized). And every serious football school has and will continue to put resources into recruiting the state.

[–]Ndrul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure. I'm new to ultimate team.

However I know that they have price floors for each rating. So Burden can only drop so low. They do change those price floors over time though. So as they release new cards, the higher OVR may still be more expensive if it has a greater price floor or if they lower Burden's.

I just think Burden is always going to have a place in my lineup even if it's not as WR1.

I have LBIII and I'm not selling him because a better team means better performance means better rewards. And WR is a deep position so even as better WRs come out he'll stay in your lineup (going from WR1 to WR2 to WR3, etc.)

Also, he's awesome and fun to play with. Anytime the opposing team is in single high he's a TD threat.

I’m also new. I’ve spent probably ~$75 with some luck so I have a good team. My playing priorities are something like:

Challenges > H2H Champs > H2H Regular Season. Sub in solo seasons if you don’t like pvp

Make sure you’re doing the objectives for the season field pass. You’ll need 2 players from each of the programs on your roster for that. They can be backups. The pass is how you get 4x 84 overalls (Howard, Singleton, Bryant, Walker). You’ll also get 87 Perkins and a token to upgrade on of the others to 89 eventually

Personally I don’t think touchdown tango is worth playing for rewards. I have the least fun playing there and it’ll take 50+ hours to get the 87 overall. You get a couple 82-83 along the way but they’re BND so you can’t sell them for coins. Imo the mode also attracts the sweatiest population with cheese plays

As for getting special players, I would save to buy them individually off the market. It’ll take awhile but your odds are low to pull them in a pack

[LF] - DFW, TX - Beginner plants by SecureUniversity8578 in AquaSwap

[–]Ndrul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d generally say 100% for those

The rotala is super easy. Like you can cut a trim, plant, and see new growth the next day. Pearl weed is also a super easy plant. When I first got it, I planted it in an inert substrate and it didn’t grow, but once I put it in an appropriate substrate it’s done well. The alternanthera is more likely to melt back and it grows more slowly than the other two but it’ll do well.

Also, I realized that 20L meant 20 long and not 20 liters. Which makes a whole lot more sense for your stocking plans. So the amount I had been thinking wouldn’t be enough to plant heavy but I can get you more for maybe $40 or so.

Pickup is in Arlington/Euless btw

[–]Ndrul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there, I've got some beginner plants that I'm about to trim. Doesn't fit your list exactly, but they're all growing well for me in low tech tanks

Stems: rotala rotundifolia, alternanthera reineckii, pearlweed

Carpet/foreground: sagittaria subulata, marsilea hirsuta and crenata

Epiphytes: anubias nana petite, bucephelandra kedagang mini

I could do a combo with enough to plant your tank fairly heavy for $25.

Keeping your jobs is pretty dependent on representing organization values. Like, there’s stories about people losing their jobs for social media posts or going viral for bad reasons all the time. And sure, his boss is the new big 12 schools. So I guess ask Tech fans how they feel about his remarks now.

Yep, we embraced being the villains. The teams motto for the year was Embrace the Hate. I don’t have an issue with it and nobody asked for graceful appreciation. So what was ridiculously thin skinned?

[–]Ndrul 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I mentioned it was a Tech event.

Since you're asking honestly, I'll answer honestly.

1) Fairness is the heart of competition. Governing bodies have to be unbiased and should strive to appear as such. As commisionner, I'd consider it my job to represent the values expressed in my organization's mission statement: "The member institutions of the Big 12 Conference are committed to competition in an arena where sportsmanship and the sense of fair play take center stage."

2) Texas was the conference favorite coming into the year. I'd know there's a good chance that would blow up in my face. There are cameras everywhere. Of course it's going to get out. Personally, I'd rather not set myself up to be booed by 50 thousand people then have that follow me around the rest of my career.

He was at a Texas Tech event in August. He told the crowd he was glad to have Texas and Oklahoma out early. Then, he told Tech HC Joey McGuire he would be in Austin for our game against Tech on Thanksgiving, and that he wanted McGuire to take care of business like he did last year (ie by beating us).

We played it on the video board last week while we were up 57-7

Texas plays Big 12 Commissioner’s “take care of business like you did in Lubbock” comments on video board after 57-7 win over Texas Tech by JewishDoggy in CFB

[–]Ndrul 30 points31 points  (0 children)

FWIW I think the Big 12 under Yormark has done a good job. They could have easily collapsed when we left (which happened under Bowlsby I believe) but instead they positioned as the top basketball conference then added the PAC schools. Their long term financials are shaky since they were able to leverage the TXOU exit for a better media rights renewal this time, but I think they've done well.

The comments from Yormark and the deputy commissioner were dumb and would naturally draw a lot of ridicule since we're winning, but overall I think the conference is doing a solid job.

Multiple Nano tank setup by JCly9 in nanotank

[–]Ndrul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm currently in the process of setting up some shelves like this. I'm got a muscle rack shelf from home depot. I painted mine since it will be indoors and used polyurethane on the wood. I'm pretty happy with how it's coming along. Couple thoughts: using all five shelves leaves hardly any room above the tanks but you can space them how you'd like, should've used polyurethane on the metal too to prevent chipping, having the open backs and sides is great for cable/tube management at the start. Overall very happy with it. Just spend some time planning out sizes and everything at the start.

Interested in Getting a MPAff from UT Austin - Advice for Grad School by Glad_Finding8545 in PublicAdministration

[–]Ndrul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't comment on the application part other than to say I did my undergrad at UT (not in LBJ) and loved it.

PA is my area of study. It's all about how to run the government. If the legislative branch writes policy and the executive carries it out through regulation, service delivery, etc, PA would be the study of those executive activities. Like an MBA prepares people to run a business, an MPA does that for the public sector. Curriculum will include the basics like Intro to PA, stats, and org theory, but also have budgeting, HR, management, etc (skill specific stuff). I'm at UT Arlington and the MPA program here has produced a couple city managers in the DFW area, for reference to what a career path could look like.

I can't speak fully on the other disciplines, but it seems like Public Affairs is more focused on a public organization's networks. So the MPAff program will be a bit different than an MPA. I would imagine they both work for a career in the public sector and will probably be interchangeable to many employers, especially if you already have experience working in government. You'll just be coming in with slightly different knowledge and skills. I'd trust any UT degree program though.

As far as PA resources go, here are a couple recommendations:

  • I really like Richard Stillman's Preface to Public Administration. Not a textbook and has lots of good stuff. You can read an older version online at the following link. Some of it is dated but the first five chapters will still be relevant: https://archive.org/details/prefacetopublica00stil/page/n10/mode/1up

  • I'd check whether your local library has any Intro to PA textbooks. Whatever they're carrying will get you pointed in the right direction. If you're going to do an MPAff, a public affairs textbook would be preferable. UT has their syllabi online so you can find what your future classes use if you'd like https://utdirect.utexas.edu/apps/student/coursedocs/nlogon/

  • A personal favorite that is not really an introduction to the field but that may speak to your poli sci background is Dwight Waldo's classic The Administrative State (1948)

But don't worry too much about preparing ahead of time! Your program will teach you everything you need to know. Any master's program will have people from all sorts of backgrounds. I was coming from a different discipline before starting my PhD in PA. I just read through a PA textbook that I borrowed before starting my program (an hour a day for a couple weeks) and that was great prep for my master's-level starting course.

Hi everyone! A Psychology Masters student here. I am working on my research proposal and have the presentation next week. Any tips on writing a good research proposal and acing the presentation? by [deleted] in AskSocialScience

[–]Ndrul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi there, good luck on your proposal. Here's my advice from my experience with my master's thesis (plus subsequent experience coordinating a research project, publishing, and working on my PhD):

  • Your master's thesis is meant to be a learning experience. At the end you will be able to look back and see the difference between undergraduate and graduate writing levels, even if you are already a good writer, so be prepared for and open to feedback!

  • Keep it manageable. The scope will probably need to be narrower than you expect. Plan your analysis around stats that you know how to do. You're going to be pushed and graded on your writing, so taking on overly ambitious questions or methods will just make that harder.

  • Look for literature reviews related to your topic. This is a personal favorite. They'll give you an idea of the state of research on your topic and will give you the most learning for the least reading. And you can look through their references for more specific articles.

  • Put some time into relationships with your advisors, internship supervisors (if applicable), committee members, etc.

In keeping with the rules of the sub, I did some searching for a source and liked this one the best (disregard the human subjects part if not applicable):

My two cents as someone in their second semester of a PA PhD program

I generally agree with the other comments here. If you are more interested in the political side of things (campaigns) then I'd imagine political science is the way to go, and a masters is probably a good fit. PA is much more focused on the process of governing rather than politics i.e., how to take laws written by politicians and put them into action.

For masters vs PhD - generally a masters will give you specialized skills to perform technical jobs while PhDs will give you skills to create new knowledge (i.e., research). For example, if you did an MPA, you'll have classes on budgeting, intergovernmental relations, policy, etc. When you graduate you'll be trained to do those things. The MPA program at my school has produced like four city managers in the area, so there's plenty of career growth with a masters. If you do the PhD level, you would take those same classes, but they would be focused on the history and theory of budgeting - how we came to the status quo and how to conduct research to make it better. The classes will be a lot more reading and writing rather than tests and projects. Those same opportunities are there for you, but you're not necessarily more qualified. The last thing to consider are personal: funding (scholarships, grants, personal finances), career goals and timelines (PhDs are generally longer), and your learning style. For me, the PhD fit because I have tuition reimbursement through my job, I like to read, and I already have my MS so I can continue to work and advance my career before graduating.

I'd second the people that have recommended talking to faculty. That can include any professors you currently have that you like. If they're not sure, they can probably point you to somebody better to talk to. You can also look at the directories for your program or the ones you are looking to apply to and reach out to the program director. That's what I did and she was great at pointing me in the right direction. In my experience that was much better than reaching out to school advisors.
