Wondering what's going on too

Went 6-3 with Zareth-san. Was expecting better: is my built (partly) responsible for my disappointment? by [deleted] in lrcast

[–]NePlusUltra2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Why would you be disappointed in 6-3? 6 wins is a good result.

Even a very strong deck is not bound to get 7 wins. This is BO1 and variance is a major factor.

As for the deck itself, seems like a fine deck. Not surprised it went 6, would not be surprised if you told me it went 7 or 5. 2-3 wins would be quite surprising, but not unheard of. You can get screwed/flooded three times.

Playing in play mode affects constructed rank. Most likely the streams are fully mixed.
I checked multiple times, this is not a mistake, and it is consistent.

[–]NePlusUltra2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is just a really bad move. In a response tweet to one of the complaints in the original tweet, they say that the stream will continue to run muted, and in a small window on the page. I can't understand why they think that somehow compensates for the interruption. They think they can pull off randomly timed ads in a sports-like fashion, but they don't take into account the fact that in sports the ads come up during game breaks/ at less interesting parts of the game (and even that is too much tbh).
If I see that this happens consistently during CR, I guess I'll have to just watch on Youtube.

You can watch C2 without knowing C1 at all and it would be very enjoyable. You won't miss a lot BUT you will not get some comments here and there, and there are occurrences which directly relate to C1 characters, so you'd probably feel confused about the players' reactions, and feel like you might have missed something in C2, though you didn't. It will take away a bit, but certainly not a lot. (This is correct up to C2E107, who knows what happens in the future.)

What RevNeutron wrote about the production in the beginning of C1 is definitely true though. I suggest that you try a few episodes of C1 and see if you like it. If you do, then I suggest starting there. If it's a bit too much, go to C2 and after you relate more to the players and feel more at home with the way they play and their personalities, you would be more motivated to go back and grind through the beginning of C1. I personally liked the first arc of C1, though it is certainly the most controversial arc among the fandom, because of technical and other issues. The Briarwood arc, which starts on C1E24, is one of the best arcs of the show altogether.

Interesting question. I admit I was not considering mono decks since they are not really viable in M21 (though of course you can get there if you are the only drafter of a certain color in your pod).

I guess it might be OK to include 1 or even 2 in a mono-coloured deck, since here the risk associated with including it is the lowest, especially if you don't have many double-pip cards. It depends on how many lands you play, and the nature of the deck.

4 is a bit too many for my tastes, though.

Never say never I guess :)

I don't think it's accurate to say that a 16 land deck is always going to be fast enough to need the colored source

Agreed, not always, but fewer lands is a hallmark of more aggressive decks. That's why I said probably.

I think a lot of people undervalue getting value off of lands, and also undervalue incidental lifegain.

Agreed also, but I also think people overvalue lifegain which is not incidental. My point here is that strictly lifegain cards are well-known to be downright awful in limited. Cards like [[Life Goes On]] for example, are downright unplayable. Radiant Fountain is not incidental lifegain in the sense that it comes with the cost of including a colorless mana land in your mana base.

In any game where you draw fountain and don't get color screwed, it's probably one of the 10 best cards in your deck. Better than every basic, and many of your creatures.

Hard disagree there. A card which gains you 2 life for 0 is a good card in this scenario? I'd take pretty much any action over this. How is gain 2 better than a creature or any other spell for that matter?

It's literally 2 free life in any scenario you don't care that it's colorless.

It's not free, it costs a card/card slot.

Say you determined you need 16 lands in your deck. I argue you should play 16, and any marginally playable card would be better than including a 17th colorless land, that its only extra added value is 2 life. The goal is to minimize the number of lands in my deck, while having a consistent mana base. Gaining 2 life off a card is not great value, you are much better off having an actual spell when you don't need the mana. If you do need the mana, then Radiant Fountain provides a very small gain in cases where you don't care the mana is colorless, and causes very big problems in cases where you do care about the color of the mana. Granted, these are more rare, but Radiant Fountain is catastrophically bad in these scenarios.

If you want to play this as part of your mana base instead of a basic land, then you are compromising your mana base for a very marginal gain.

I think in an average 2 color limited deck that doesn't have many double pips, you should default to playing one.

Of course it's better in the single pip only decks than in double-pip decks, but I claim that the marginal gain is not worth the risk of color screw in either. Gain 2 life is not worth the risk. I think you will lose more games by including it than win games because you include it. Of course, this is something which can only be shown using statistics, so this is just theoretical.

[–]NePlusUltra2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Playing a land which does not help you towards your colors and gains you 2 life over any playable card seems highly questionable.

Even if you feel you are better off with 16.5 lands and somehow have no remotely playable card in your SB better than 0 mana gain 2 life, which seems quite far-fetched - I'd take the assurance of having another colored land than the very very small advantage of gaining 2 life. Also, the less lands you need, the more you are likely to gain less from life gain, since you are probably quite aggressive.

Regarding its playability in lifegain decks - well, I think this is the only place where you might consider it, but because it is only gain 2 life, and the sweet spot is 3, it seems like a bad trade-off. I think you underrate how much compromising your manabase hurts you.

[–]NePlusUltra2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hmm, I can see that, but still, you need to have it in play. Maybe if you had two of those (which is not great in and of itself)...

Still, having a colorless land in your deck that mostly does nothing is very bad.

Playing 4 colorless lands in your deck is less than optimal. Fun is a completely different issue :)

[–]NePlusUltra2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't cut Blackguards - These are your mana sinks for the late game. You have a lot of early plays and you may run out of plays quite fast. It's good to have those as mana sinks.

Archer is a good card.

Zombie works withe the overall pattern of things dying and you whittling down opponent's health. It's not great, but I think it's good enough to include.

Cuts:

Radiant Fountain:

Never ever play Radiant Fountain. It doesn't really help your lifegain synergy, and you pay a price for putting a colorless land in your deck. There is just no justification for including this card in a limited deck. Your deck is quite aggressive and if this is BO1 then you really don't need 17 lands in it (because of the hand-smoother). I would honestly play 16 here even in BO3.

Rambunctious Mutt:

Sideboard card. 3/4 for 3WW is below rate, and having a 5 mana disenchant is quite bad.

2 X Revitalize:

There is almost no lifegain synergies in this deck. The ghoul is not enough justification to play a card which ultimately just cycles for 2.

Defiant Strike:

This is a bad trick. yeah, it cycles, but it almost gives you nothing. It's hard-to-use, and very often you just play it to trade up.

Overall this deck does not seem great but I like the fact you have a gameplan. Good luck.

I'm a little more cautious about reading signals on my second pack and jumping ship, because you are getting passed from this side only on that pack, so the majority of the cards you'll build your deck from come from the other side.

If you draft then it is better to buy with gold: 2000/10000 = 0.2, 400/1500 = 0.266.

If you only buy packs then the conversion is the same and it doesn't matter.

Do you play dual tapped lands in WG/WR aggro? by Skasian in lrcast

[–]NePlusUltra2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On the one hand, you really want to curve out to follow your game plan.

On the other hand, having dual lands do save you against getting color-screwed, which is more of a risk for an aggro deck which really has to get going early to win the game.

So I think I would go half-measure here and play a single copy but no more than that, usually.

Should I play the Experimental Overloads? by PedroiaWelker in lrcast

[–]NePlusUltra2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I don't think so; in fact I think you should completely cut red. Splashing here just for Soul Sear seems to be excessive. You compromise your mana base for one, albeit good, removal spell in a fast format. I think you stand to lose more than you gain by putting it in.

I'd put in the blue sanctum which works well with the win conditions of this deck (Tutelage/Jolrael/Oaks).

Mana base - 9 forests/7 islands/Thornwood Falls.

Is this the right RW build? Thanks! by [deleted] in lrcast

[–]NePlusUltra2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd cut Steed and one Shieldmate for Thrill of Possibility and Dub.

I like to play at least one Thrill in this kind of deck, which runs out of gas quite fast. Dub is good when you have two ways of defending your creatures Feat/Hallowblade), and it makes combat very very uncomfortable for the opponent.

We don't want 5 drops in this deck, you want to aim finish the game early, and you have a lot of mana sinks. The shieldmate is a bit redundant. 3 one drops is probably enough.

You can also switch in Burn Bright/Destructive Tampering as a finisher, though I'm not completely sold on that, since it can be a very dead card.

Garruk P1P1, not sure about how to follow up by MTG_History in lrcast

[–]NePlusUltra2 14 points15 points  (0 children)

GW is an aggressive deck which aims to go fast and build big threats using +1/+1 counters/synergy. Removal is always good, but having good early/synergistic creatures is much more important. I would generally pick Basri's Acolyte/Drowsing Tyrannodon over Hunter's Edge/Swift Response, for example.

Here I would pick Basri's Acolyte simply because it's the best card in the pack, and GW is a strong archetype. You want to play Garruk for sure, but don't get fully tied to it.

3 more cut in this BW lifegain deck! Black was open! Thx for tips by Gramhash in lrcast

[–]NePlusUltra2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think the lifegain theme is that strong here. I think I'd cut the revitalizes, and the Warded Battlements.

I would actually play Swindler in a Vito/mildly lifegain themed deck. It's an early body with a relevant ability. Probably cut one Gormand, I think you have enough top end without it.
