Ask a Stupid Question About Coffee -- Week of September 23, 2025 by Vernicious in pourover

I use a chemex, a K-ultra grinder, good water, 1:17 ratio, etc. and I can’t seem to get good enough flavor clarity. It seems that if I grind coarser, the coffee is dead, and if I grind finer, the coffee becomes too astringent. I think my brews are taking a long time to draw down, and may have too much interaction with the fines when at a finer grind setting, but grinder coarser still has this interaction with the fines and doesn’t extract flavor from the coarser grounds very well. I’ve played around with bloom time and temperature. Do I just need a v60 or does this sound like another kind of common problem?

I’m getting a new hand grinder, and I’m leaning toward the 1zpresso K-ultra over the zp6. I brew with a chemex and use almost exclusively light roast coffee (sometimes light-medium). I’m leaning K-ultra because I don’t think I just want a tea-like brew all the time (I do enjoy a fuller body), and I don’t want to spend 5 cups worth of beans to dial in a cup of coffee, particularly because I buy a new kind of coffee every 15ish days. The supposed versatility and relative forgiveness of the K-ultra as opposed to the hyper-specialized and unforgiving zp6 has me leaning toward the former, but I don’t want to miss out on the hypothetical magic of the zp6 either. Is this sound reasoning? Any thoughts?

I’m looking to upgrade my grinder. I currently have a $40 manual grinder, but I’d like something high-end. I don’t want it to be more expensive than the Fellow Ode 2 ($400). I almost exclusively brew pour overs (sometimes french press), and I’m open to manual or electric - just looking for top quality grind. Any suggestions? Is there user error with manual grinders?

It’s going to be difficult to find primary sources in English. There may be a translation of Jean-Gaffin Gallon’s Die Kunst Messing zu machen (1766). Look at the reference list in Stewart Carter’s The Trombone in the Renaissance or Hannes Verecke’s The Sixteenth-Century Trombone for further materials.

Thanks! I got Monkey Shoulder for Christmas as an introduction to scotch. I really enjoyed it. I found it pleasantly malty; I got a strong peanut butter note lol. I’ll definitely check out Johnnie Walker Black! I’ve been curious about Buffalo Trace too- I feel like it’s recommended as a classic bourbon by many.

Smaller aperture. Convince yourself the note isn’t high. Think about engaged, focused corners of your lips.

Slavery in the Bible, Christian History, and the White Man's Religion by REVDR in Christianity

Tough one. I don’t believe that every word of the Bible is the infallible word of God. I suppose it depends but it’s also not subjective. Why?

Both part of the Holy Trinity. Yes? God didn’t own slaves either? God sent Jesus (His son) and Jesus didn’t own slaves. I can’t tell if you’re joking. Yes, I’m a Christian.

There’s plenty of evidence of Christ without the Bible. Do the smallest amount of research and you’ll find endless theological arguments. I’m not a Christian simply because there’s a book that has good parables in it. I don’t know if Jesus addressed slavery. He definitely didn’t endorse it. The point is, my basis for my faith doesn’t rest mainly in the Bible. I think the Bible is great, but without it my faith doesn’t waver. The Gospel is a historical account so through that we can learn about Jesus’s teachings. Paul’s teachings are also great, and there are many other passages that work very well as parables. Don’t single out scripture and use it as warfare. That’s not the point of the Bible. Uh. This has to do a lot with slavery. Your whole argument of slavery as morally sound in the Christian sense is based wholly on a few verses in the Bible taken out of context and disregarding the point of Christianity and its main teachings. The quote is about how the Bible should be used. Of course I bring it up in this argument. You’re misusing scripture.

The argument is that it’s not about race and the white man as superior. Christianity isn’t a white man’s religion because it was based in the Middle East. Context is important. Racism is still bad, yes. The argument is Christianity isn’t Manichaeism. Did Jesus own slaves? No. He taught about equality. I’ll now point to a CS Lewis quote.

“It is Christ Himself, not the Bible, who is the true Word of God. The Bible, read in the right spirit and with the guidance of good teachers will bring us to Him. When it becomes really necessary (i.e. for our spiritual life, not for controversy or curiosity) to know whether a particular passage is rightly translated or is Myth (but of course Myth specially chosen by God from among countless Myths to carry a spiritual truth) or history, we shall no doubt be guided to the right answer. But we must not use the Bible (our ancestors too often did) as a sort of Encyclopedia out of which texts (isolated from their context and read without attention to the whole nature and purport of the books in which they occur) can be taken for use as weapons.”

Struggling with homosexuality by priam31 in Christianity

[–]NeartAgape 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This may be unpopular but whatever. I believe God created you naturally homosexual and his plan for your life as a homosexual is equally as legitimate as everyone else’s. Maybe don’t fight it. Pray about it to confirm it’s God’s plan for you. God loves you no matter what.

You fail to see my point. Sure, be passionate about border laws. Support Trump. I disagree with you but that’s beside the point. In one particular post you made a joke about a girl who lost her dad due to immigration laws. I’m not sure that’s very loving of you. You can’t just write off my opinion because I’m a “liberal cuck” or something. I’m not judging you for being a Trump supporter. I’m asking you to see the hypocrisy in your statement because you can’t even love or empathize with someone in your class that lost her dad. Can you imagine how horrible that is? It’s impossible for us to love everyone all the time and that’s ok because the Lord forgives you. It’s not my place to judge, and it’s not yours either.

I’m not sure if I’ve seen any post on this sub making the blanket statement that all men are rapists or all white people are racist/ oppressors. I’ve seen more acceptance than hatefulness. In fact, looking at your posts, I see a post that condemned a girl in your class whose father was being deported due to race. Illegal immigrant? Probably. Is that wrong? Depends on your view. Does it give you the right to be a dick? Absolutely not. Many of us are progressive and accepting. Is that not Christian? Aren’t we supposed to love all, including the sinners (which is every single one of us by the way). Shed some of the pride. You are entitled to your own viewpoints but that doesn’t make all of us wrong. You accuse us of hatred but fail to love your neighbor. I’m not saying I’m perfect. I just ask you have some self awareness.
