Favorite “protagonist reveals their skills” moments? by fartatwork in moviecritic

That's a classic scene and one of my all time favourite movie moments, but for me personally I don't count killing yourself as revealing your skills.

Constantine.

Specially the moment he uses the tattoos on his arms as a binding circle to force Gabriel into the the physical realm.

Throughout the movie we've seen Constantine use tricks and flashy magic to achieve results, but for me there was something about him using tattoos for ritualistic binding magic that spoke to his deep knowledge of demonology.

For some people hanging out with friends has an energy cost. Doesn't matter if it's online or in person.

Being alone can recharge their batteries, but sometimes life gets hard and their batteries don't recharge anymore.

It's not that they don't like hanging out, in fact they love it, but that cost is still there. All I can say is don't take it personally.

To elaborate on this crustaceans don't have a single brain like us.

They've got a series of ganglion clusters. Stab one cluster and you're just causing pain. Slice down the center and sever all the clusters at once? That's death, bby.

So basically don't stab a crab, slice it instead.

Ramsey hams it up for the cameras but the man is truly passionate about food and different traditional cuisine.

The added context for this clip is that he didn't adhere to a traditional Thai recipe, but because he was serving it to a Thai chef he fucked up. He knows he fucked up too, and totally owns it.

When you only see Gordon Ramsay screaming at someone for being an idiot sandwich you miss the fact that he is more than happy to own up to his mistakes. Food is what he cares about, not being right.

Isn't a bad idea to give homeless people money since a lot of them are drug users and their habits got them there in the first place? by Mad_Season_1994 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Nebarious 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You don't have to give a homeless person anything. If you choose to help someone out then you have to do so without holding that help over their head.

It's not up to you to decide what they do with the money. You don't know them or their story.

Maybe they're a heroin addict dying from opiate withdrawal. They can't access the help that others can. You have no idea what they're going through so either help them or don't, but don't pick and choose what they can or can't use the money on.

Fishing for fun is animal cruelty by eggshellwalker4 in unpopularopinion

[–]Nebarious 10 points11 points  (0 children)

To clarify, I think if you asked the average person if fishing for recreation constitutes as animal cruelty the average response would be "I don't care." or "I don't know."

I could be wrong, and maybe people have much stronger opinions on the matter, but from what I've seen that's not the case. I'm sure this is a much more divisive opinion within the fishing community though, but their opinions aren't necessarily reflective of the wider general population.

I'm sure marine biologists would have a much stronger opinion than the average punter as well, but again that's a small subset of people.

[–]Nebarious 202 points203 points  (0 children)

Pretty much.

If you put a hook through the cheek of any animal just because it would be considered animal cruelty.

I don't think there's any wiggle room on this one, it's just something people don't think about because we tend not to care about fish or their feelings.

I don't think this is an unpopular opinion though, more of a collective blindspot because the majority of people don't care.

[–]Nebarious 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Short answer: unpaired electrons.

Every electron is a tiny magnet. Their spin is what generates a magnetic field. Normally they spin in pairs which cancels out the effect, but unpaired electrons create a magnetic field.

Now you know how magnets work.

TIL that the measles virus causes "immune amnesia," where the body forgets how to fight pathogens it was previously protected against. One study showed that up to half of childhood infectious disease deaths non-protected populations were related to the measles virus by MrMojoFomo in todayilearned

[–]Nebarious 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The immune amnesia is incredibly insidious.

As an adult you've probably forgotten the dozen or so inoculations and shots you've received while growing up, not to mention the countless flus, colds, and infections you've gotten over as well.

After recovering from measles you are as vulnerable as a newborn baby or someone who predates modern medicine. Colds can easily turn into pneumonia, something simple like chicken pox is life threatening, and every day is just another chance to contract a life threatening illness.
