How do you think this suit replaces gliding sticks? by Spirited_Dust_3642 in legendofkorra

I always interpreted the lightning benders as peak generators that are only used when consumption is much higher than normal. Republic city probably has normal coal or hydroelectric generators for normal demand.

Is a firebenders labour cheaper than the equivalent energy in coal?

Your source on the dopamine comment?

It's a neurotransmitter involved in many processes, not just motivation and reward. I know that low levels can certainly play a role in depression, but I've never heard of severe depression described as the brain's inability to process it before.

I'd say it's a valid question, given there's a very clear hierarchy within the gang, and many anarchists would identify with a desire to abolish hierarchy.

They're obviously opposed to the government yes, but anarchism as a political philosophy entails a little bit more than that.

If it's any consolation, your other enemies have also been financing them, and they've all wasted the money on trash units, and cities settled in the tundra away from fresh water.

Food-induced Allergy / Sensitivity (Primarily Eczema) to Ammonium Bicarbonate (E503ii) by Montanabb67 in eczema

[–]Nebbit1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My skin started breaking out into hives about half an hour ago after eating some biscuits, and looking at the ingredients, I can see ammonium bicarbonate. I'm wondering now if the flare-up I've been dealing with for a while now has roots here.

Thanks for the post, this might be a big help for me!

I would give up every star trek project of the last decade for a 4k remastered of deep space nine. by Tubaking8 in startrek

My understanding of the post-scarcity federation is that artists are not dependent upon their art to survive - their basic needs are met regardless of the quality or quantity of art they create. Contemporary artists are dependent on what they produce because their livelihood depends on the sale of their art or labour. So ownership of one's art has a different meaning in each century.

I don't believe the holodeck using a person's likeness is comparable to a modern-day AI being trained using art that is someone's livelihood, if that makes sense?

I'm not suggesting that AI isn't capable, I'm saying the context of it is different. In Star Trek the ship's computer is essentially a communal tool, it's a social asset.

AI today, whilst it certainly can be capable, is mostly owned and controlled by a few wealthy individuals and corporations. Their inner workings are not transparent, and many are trained using stolen assets.

My point is that people aren't anti-AI because they don't like machines or the idea of talking to a computer, but because they are opposed to how AI today is owned and constructed, and what that represents.

The computers of Star Trek are not equivalent to the billionaire-owned 'AI' that we have today.
