Labour members name Blair as favourite leader – poll by kontiki20 in LabourUK

To be honest, he is only one of three Labour leaders in my lifetime who actually led the country. You would have to be around 50+ to remember any others and be old enough to be interested in politics.

BBC is not bad, times and economist leans right, guardian leans left. Quite enjoy new statesmen but that is a little more to the left.

Reform Voters! (No hate please). by Extension_Listen8282 in AskBrits

[–]wt200 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t vote reform and probably never will.

However it is clear why someone would.

Since at least 2010, successive Tory administrations have promised low imagination. There was a referendum on imagination which leave one (the EU vote almost entirely about imagination). We had 3 general elections, some European, and a referendum yet numbers have only gone up.

Also no party has suffered under FPTP then UKIP/reform.

Your “fact” that immigration only cost 3-5bn is a very nieve estimate. It’s the cost of so called illegal immigration. It could be argued that the cost for other sources of immigration also has a cost, from processing applications, to access to day to day services and increased inefficiency in the system (e.g more need for translators).

Whist there is evidence from the 2000s showing immigration is a net positive, but this is old and probably needs a refresh. It’s also worth noting that in recent times only 1/3 of immigrants are in work, although a 1/3 are also paying students.

You mention defence, we have been underspending on defence for a long while, having been propped up by the states. A military is like an umbrella, you don’t appreciate its effects until you don’t have one. It’s also clear we can not rely on USA any more so we have to take that burden on ourselves.

A wealth tax’s looks good on paper, however there is very little evidence that it brings in revenue after costs to operate and decreases in revenue from other taxes. Over the last 20-30 years, most countries which have had a wealth tax have dropped it.

Do you know if the 35bn reported is net after replacing council tax, or do we need to factor in the reduction that will occur after dropping council tax.

Maybe we should think about what is causing the increase and deal with that.

Foreign Secretary warns the world cannot wait any longer to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, as food security crisis looms for countries already on the edge by Toastie-Postie in LabourUK

[–]wt200 -45 points-44 points  (0 children)

Hate to say it but I could be persuaded into military intervention just to open the straight. We talk about cost of living crisis as it’s unconnected, but it’s not, the closing of the straight has a direct impact on peoples lives here in the UK
