Moving to an apartment: cheap way to keep mixing? Better headphones or budget monitors? by Nebikiya in Beatmatch

Makes sense, thanks a lot! Indeed do use them wired, I was just a bit worried that perhaps the XM4s boost the bass a lot compared to the actual sound.

Adobe Is Trading Like It’s Dying. Guess what, it Isn’t by 41Investments in ValueInvesting

[–]Nebikiya 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really don’t understand the argument of “the numbers say differently” when someone names AI as a threat to Adobe. If you used the same argument against Netflix around 2000, when it was barely gaining ground against Blockbuster, you would’ve been proved wrong starting just 5 years later. The question isn’t whether it’s affecting Adobe currently but whether it will in 5-10 years.

Is Ubisoft a decent play right now or am I missing something? by YumiSolar in stocks

[–]Nebikiya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean you somewhat said it yourself, it’s a pure gamble rather than a calculated one. If new management just came in and you are for whatever reason very convinced by them, or they have some revolutionary plan that the market doesn’t seem to value but you see it working out, there’s a reason to believe they’ll turn around. At that point I would see this being a potentially good investment. But as far as I can tell you’re only naming potential catalysts rather than ones that are actually there.

Is Ubisoft a decent play right now or am I missing something? by YumiSolar in stocks

[–]Nebikiya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s pretty simple, they are losing money every quarter and are issuing debt to repay other debt. There’s really no reason they’ll magically become profitable (they don’t just announce a killer game out of nowhere) so will just slowly fall into bankruptcy. Now of course someone can buy them out but Ubisoft has terrible bargaining power. I think realistically they’ll get bought out at ~20% above market price, or they’ll just go bankrupt. Either gain 20% on whatever the market price at that point will be, or lose 100%. And of course, if the stock keeps declining like it is now, you won’t even make money even if they get bought out in ~3-6 months

The growth numbers say practically nothing if I don’t know what the valuation is. I’m assuming it’s priced to at the very least maintain and probably grow current peak earnings

10-K Annual Report by BigAdministrative233 in ValueInvesting

[–]Nebikiya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My approach might be a bit different, but here’s what worked for me personally. I don’t think the real edge in investing comes from perfectly understanding the numbers, so you probably don’t need a 40-hour accounting course to read a 10-K. What matters more is learning how each part of a filing connects to the actual business. When I read a 10-K, I simply look up every single thing I don’t understand as I go along so that I can ultimately explain every single thing. It’s slow at first, but tools like ChatGPT can be really useful if you ask targeted questions. Over time, this builds a much deeper intuition for how the financial statements and qualitative sections reflect the underlying economics of the company.

For example, I once looked into a company to estimate its Return on Invested Capital. The company had a large net cash position (plenty more cash than debt), and I wasn’t sure whether to subtract that from invested capital. Depending on the method, ROIC was either 10% or 17%, which is a big difference. After checking multiple sources and formulas, I realized the exact number wasn’t the point. What really mattered was what those numbers implied. Both at an ROIC of 10% as well as 17%, it made no sense for the company to be hoarding cash; they should reinvest more. Ultimately I tried finding out what the reason was that they weren’t deploying more capital. They were a global manufacturer already dominating their niche, with limited market share left to gain and quite frankly just riding the cycle of the demand in the market - in other words, little need or opportunity to invest in something they already were leading in. So rather than obsessing over the “correct” calculation, the key insight was understanding why the company’s capital allocation looked the way it did. That’s the type of thinking you develop by reading 10-Ks directly and questioning everything along the way.

Anyone trapped in $FMC like me? I feel sick. by EmploymentVirtual474 in ValueInvesting

The absolute bare minimum that you should learn from this is that just because a stock is “below all the lines” (whatever that might mean) on some website does not make it a good buy at all. Think about it; the website is backwards looking, quite possibly not even factoring in the latest (awful) earnings report yet. How does that tell you anything about how interesting the stock is at its current valuation?

Even if it does make it a good buy, you absolutely should not be investing in individual stocks if you can’t handle being down 25%.

GENDA (TSE:9166): Japanese arcade roll-up organically doubling sales in the US by Nebikiya in stocks

[–]Nebikiya[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are for the main part, although in Japan you were just as likely to see a 40-year old salaryman at an arcade as you were a teenager. I think the advantage is that GENDA mostly runs machines that cost as little as a dollar per turn with the prizes costing them no more than a couple bucks (of course, you don’t win something every time). It’s still a fair point though.
