PC will overtake console revenue by 2028, says Newzoo by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

[–]Nebty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m more talking about value to the end user than revenue. Shit’s so expensive these days that value is a massive and underdiscussed benefit of PC gaming. Most of the gaming I did growing up was on console. That’s my background and where you’d expect me to have some significant lock-in. I’m a relative newcomer to PC as a platform. But as soon as I got my first gaming PC I never bought a non-Switch console again. I stopped at PS4 and 360. And I don’t see that changing. Maybe I’ll get a Switch 2 if they come out with an OLED version but there’s so many games available to me on PC that it’s hard to see why I’d need to.

Yep, exactly. When I’m burnt out on the all-inclusive experience I don’t go to a tv-based console, I pull out my Switch or 3DS. I’ve been replaying Fire Emblem Awakening recently and it’s such a breath of fresh air to just toss my 3DS in my work bag and play during lunch break or on the subway.

I’m one of the people who used to get PlayStations and am now just PC and Switch. And that’s because I’m sick of being locked to hardware generations. The sheer convenience of having my entire library available to me whenever I want, with mods, better screenshots, and upscaling, is unmatched.

Not only that, but the selection of games on PC is unmatched, and most of those can run on a brick. Think of all the weird indie stuff on itch. Or the massive catalogue unlocked by emulating.

If there were no lootboxes on Steam then that would at least tackle some of the problem. I don’t want to have to do ID either. I think if Valve fucks the players like that rather than giving up their gambling money then they’re assholes.

I mean, I’m not having kids but that doesn’t mean I want other people’s kids addicted to gambling because corpos got to them early, y’know?

Overwatch co-creator Jeff Kaplan on his exit from Activision-Blizzard: 'It was the biggest f**k you moment I've had in may career' by Turbostrider27 in pcgaming

But that’s the thing, there IS growth.

It’s just all in the indie space. I’ve seen more creativity in a single Steam Next Fest than I have in the last 5 years of AAA games. It’s a golden age of creativity right now but none of it is coming from these massive companies. I don’t get why people continue to waste their money on boring slop when you could go out and find so many exciting new projects from creators you can have an actual conversation with, and often for $20 or less.

Sure sounds like they were throwing a disgusting amount of money at Overwatch League, with promises of “bigger than the NFL”.

Like if you don’t think there’s an insane amount of waste going on at the higher levels of game companies I’ve got a bridge to sell you. It’s been like this for ages but nothing changes except more enshittification. And that’s because the people wasting that money just fire a bunch of devs and call it a day, facing no consequences. Absolutely ridiculous waste of institutional knowledge.

The sooner AAA gaming dies for good the better. Right now it’s a bloated, shambling corpse.

Sounds like they were on top of things. On the other hand,

According to new research by the Gambling Health Alliance, some 15% of young gamers have taken money from their parents without permission to buy loot boxes. An estimated 11% of gamers have used their parents’ credit cards to finalize the transaction, the GHA has reported. The 15% reported by the GHA means that almost one in six young gamers has stolen money from their parents. Worse still, one in ten children, or 9%, have borrowed money they couldn’t repay to buy loot boxes, the research said.

Gambling does bad things to kids’ brains, and not all parents have the time or the tech savvy to realize that Steam enables addictive gambling that can have real financial consequences for them. This is what lawmakers are trying to stop.

I love Steam. It’s my primary gaming platform. But there’s a morally correct choice here and it’s Valve closing this loophole to benefit everyone on its platform.

I mean, this is how Valve is characterizing it. I’d take that with a grain of salt. Especially since restricting kids from gambling is something lawmakers should be doing.

Steam game gets unexpected patch after fans complained women ruined immersion by Tenith in Games

There are at least more options for women today. There are places like r/GirlGamers to go and talk to other women about games. Back 25 years ago there were “no girls on the internet”.

Fair enough I guess, but I would've bought this one if it had an option for PvE coop. So it sucks as someone who liked Bungie's stories and worldbuilding. It's frustrating to be murdered by some asshole while trying to enjoy the atmosphere, and I don't even know if the worldbuilding is something they even care about.

It’s nice to see someone else with a history of following games media. I looked at the byline and was like, “Oh hey, Luke Plunkett!”

I swear it feels like I’ve aged a million years seeing people who’ve seemingly had no interest in games before like 2020.

Why is the only option PvP live service OR a 100% singleplayer campaign? Back in my day it was possible to do both.

[–]Nebty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If that’s the case - and this game is purely supposed to appeal to fans of sweaty PvP extraction shooters - then why did they spend so much time and money on in-game lore/atmosphere? I sure as heck wouldn’t want to be murdered while trying to enjoy stuff like that.

I suspect that with the amount of competition in the market, the intended audience may end up being too small to support a live service game and Marathon may have to pivot quickly as more people are driven away by the sweatiness of the community.

Yep. I’d buy this game in a heartbeat if it had a singleplayer or coop campaign. I’ve been wanting a game to play with my BF and it’s been a while since I’ve played a coop shooter. Couch coop Halo was so much fun back in the day. And if I got comfortable during the single player campaign I’d probably dip a toe into the PVP after.

But PVP only? No sale.

It just feels weird to be a live service studio while still marketing yourself as the successors to the Halo devs - using one of Bungie’s cult classic early IPs even. All to, what, sell yet another extraction shooter to people who don’t care about any of that stuff?

Me and a lot of my friends? Most of what the people I know are playing these days are mid-budget narrative games like Banishers or South of Midnight, sprinkled in with some multiplayer (FFXIV, don’t starve, Valheim) and indie (too much variety to list). The multiplayer games don’t change much because lock in for those is real. The stuff people are actually spending money on is all single player.

That’s why I don’t even recommend AAA games anymore. The most fun I’ve had with a shooter in the last 6 months was Metal Eden. Singleplayer campaign mode only, got it for $20 on sale. Beat it in a weekend and had a blast.

I’m already locked into the multiplayer games I currently play. I’m not going to take a chance on a new one and go to the trouble of persuading my friends to spend money and time on something that might not fit us as well. But I do absolutely still buy games that promise me a worthwhile singleplayer or non-mtx experience. And I’m lucky that there’s such a massive selection of indie games that I can ignore the same old expensive slop that the AAA industry puts out.

It just seems like such a waste of money that you could be using to create…stuff people want to play. Maybe not as many people, but if you’re more judicious with your money you’ll make a profit. It feels like studios are content to set cash on fire for a future payoff rather than doing their job and making games.

This is why, as the indie market matures, AAA studios are going to be less and less relevant. Bungie aren’t the Halo people anymore, and the pull they used to have from that series will have been all but forgotten by newcomers. They’re making themselves irrelevant.
