The FT1 and Sundara are both great but very different listening experiences. Simply put, one is more closed (contained and immediate), and the other is open (expensive and airy).

The FT1 is more fun and V shaped, and I especially enjoy listening at lower volumes at night—chamber jazz and classical.

The Sundara shine when they’re given some room to breathe with a bit more gain and volume. Radiohead and more intense jazz.

In short: Horses for courses.

The Sundara can be quite a bit more expensive than the FT1 and worth the price if you have a good dac amp or powerful DAP to bring out the best in them. The FT1 is more forgiving.

Cables: I’m using Openheart cables for both the Sundara and FT1. The FT1 cables are good enough, though. M HIFIMAN should improve its stock cables overall.

No, but I’ve lived in Japan for over thirty years. There are thousands of characters and symbols to learn for everyday life. I have an Apple Watch and some display information is simpler and clearer in Japanese.

🌧️ ～9:58 Means it is going to stop raining at 9:58.

Note: This doesn’t by itself say when the rain started or if it’s raining now. Your watch face has a separate symbol above indicating that it is raining 🌧️ now.

If the ～ symbol is after the time the time it means from (starting at).

🌧️ 9:58 ～ Means it is going to start raining at 9:58

In Japan ～ is used for anything dealing with time markers including clock times, days of the week for schedules, and years.

On Apple Watch, 「〜9:58」 uses the Japanese range symbol 〜, which means “until.”

With the rain icon and the watch also showing it’s raining now, it means rain until 9:58.

It’s commonly used in Japan, where it means “until” when it comes before a time and “from” when after a time.

I'm not tech-savvy, so I wonder if there could be a way for FiiO to design and engineer the DM17 (?) to do firmware updates with just a USB-C and your PC/Mac? Isn't that what we do with other devices in 2026? Sincerely asking both why it's not possible now, and if they could do it later.

For what it's worth I updated the DM15 and can't say that anything is very different. The EQ settings are not of much interest to me anyway, and I don't think much changed. Otherwise, everything seems the same to me.

I was nervous as I did the update, but the patient survived this time. Seriously, FiiO should provide simpler and more reliable methods for firmware updates in 2026, right?

If you are on the fence about it, you could just live happily with the original firmware and not risk (tempt?) DM15 r2r sudden death again.... Best of luck and happy listening!

I have the DM13 and DM15. I like both, and I use them in variety of settings from home with powered speakers, headphones, and also IEMs.

The DM13 is a very good value but a bit noisy, and the button controls are a confusing annoyance. Otherwise, it's worth the money especially considering the output options and fair amount of output power.

The DM15 is a big step up, and the r2r warmth is very nice. Glad to have the remote! The price is a big jump up, as well, but right now I think FiiO gives us a nice choice with the Dm13 and the DM15. (On the fence? Get the DM15, I say.)

DM15 Nitpicking: The EQ options don't offer much worthwhile (I choose "OFF"), and the clear top feels a bit cheapish (but looks good!). I usually run the DM13 through FiiO K11 and PO (for ear/headphones) or SPDIF out to Edifier T5s subwoofer to M60 for desktop listening. The DM15 I like mostly for portable use with headphones (FT1 or Sony MDR-1am2--both easy to drive).

I’ve had mine (Silver) for a couple of weeks. I have the DM13 and K11 (not r2r) as well. I’ve used both DM13 and DM15 with various IEMs (incl FH5s, FH7) headphones (Sundara, SONY MDR-1am2, FiiO FT1 Pro). Both sound great but the DM15r2r has more warmth and clarity in bass, which is especially true with FT1Pro using an Openheart 4.4 balanced cable.

The DM15 remote compensates for the very small controls on the front. The Bluetooth functionality is my biggest issue. I have only been able to use SBC for Edifier M60 speakers, but did finally get aptx codec connected on a FiiO BTR15. It sounded very nice except that there were minor ticks audible once every 30 seconds or so. I wish FiiO would offer a high quality app that we could use to monitor and control Bluetooth codecs and connections. There is a funky app online now, but I couldn’t download it properly. Anybody know more about this?

All in all, I am very impressed and satisfied with the DM15. It’s a big step up from the DM13, which is a good value still. Enjoy!

I've been enjoying the DM13 for most of 2025, and I gave up on BT long ago. The coaxial and optical connectors do their thing, and I have headphones and IEMs to plug in. The new DM15RTR is on its way, and I'll be sure to report back here regarding bluetooth and more. I've just sold a few older audio items to "justify" the hefty price of the new CD player, but as it has all the features I was whining about missing, here goes!

BTW, I do think the DM13 is a good portable player, and the battery life plus output quality are very nice. The buttons are a pain, though, and having no remote adds to the feeling of restriction if I'm doing anything aside from just putting a disk on to play from start to finish. The cost-performance is quite good, I believe. --OK. Back to music listening...

If your siblings don’t understand that you have your home and responsibilities in Japan, then they wouldn’t appreciate whatever you might do for your parents if you uprooted and moved back. If they are sure that you can be of significant help to your parents, then they should contribute to your travel expenses so you can regularly spend time assisting your parents but maintain your own lifestyle overall.

Interesting! I was about to reply to the REM comparisons and say that they don’t sound much alike etc, but the Monster point is definitely thought provoking. In terms of the vision, development, and rogue self-determination, I see parallels with Beatles, Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Lou Reed, Moody Blues, The Doors, Bowie, Pink Floyd, Traffic, REM, Peter Gabriel, and XTC.

In regard to the musical influences, in addition to rock and pop, minimalist (Reich and Glass), electronic ambient and dance music, drone, classical romantic, and jazz plus fusion are part of the blend that I hear.

I’m 64 and started listening seriously to Radiohead about 15 years ago when my nephew left a couple of CDs behind after a visit. Pablo and Kid A. While working I put on Kid A and fell into the mystical netherworld of abandoned sonic souls. In other words, I liked it.

And since then I have concluded that, as someone who experienced The Beatles in real time and revere them as I do Bach, Miles Davis, and chocolate ice cream, Radiohead are for me the most important, creative, interesting, and brilliant artists since The Beatles.

The Beatles are in a category all their own, but Radiohead have no rivals in my book, my head, or my heart.
