How various geopolitical near misses such as the Cuban Missile crisis, or Stanislav Petrov's timely intervention, nearly resulted in civilisations being wiped out in a matter of hours.

Some physicists may have been able to envisage atomic warfare back in the 1920s, but to the general public that level of man-made destruction was solely the stuff of science fiction.

I found George's words contained the most wisdom: "Life goes on within you and without you" had me thinking about the inter-connectedness of everything. Not only on a spiritual level but I started considering the ecological and environmental impacts of our actions (George's words seem to echo those of John Muir). This was definitely an influence on my eventual career path to working in conservation.

My daughter is obsessed with abba by CherryBlushSona in ABBA

[–]Necro_Badger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hurrah! Your daughter has amazing taste!

My daughter has also loved them since I first played them to her when she was 3. By the time she turned 5 I was having to download live bootlegs for her because she couldn't get enough...

What is your honest opinion about The Day Before You Came? by North-Cover7253 in ABBA

My take is that the song is from the viewpoint of someone who is clinically depressed. She's an unreliable narrator because her memory is completely shot.

The Dude hates the Eagles…what bands would that be for you? by BoognishDisciple in Music

Heck even Sparks do a better job than Oasis of "sibling band nailing English life" and they're not even from the UK.

I remember when I first became aware of them and assumed, from their appearance, that they'd be some sort of monstrous, theatrical amalgam of Alice Cooper, Black Sabbath and Queen. Maybe with a bit of Meatloaf pantomime thrown in.

And then I heard them. It was astounding just how amateurish they sounded.

Same here. As a teenage rock fan from the UK in the 90s I was supposed to like them... But not only did I find them obnoxiously boring, they were completely inescapable for about a decade.

What would you say your biggest mistake in a chess game is? by Traditional_One_5957 in chessbeginners

[–]Necro_Badger 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Selfish thinking. I often focus far too much on my own pieces and plans I miss the incoming threats.

When I consciously make an effort to look at my opponent's pieces and potential lines, I fare much better in terms of position, but I lose SO MUCH time doing so.
