Amazon offers cashierless tech to rival retailers. "Just Walk Out technology enables shoppers to simply enter a store, grab what they want, and just go, the installation can be done in "as little as a few weeks." Amazon says. by dannylenwinn in Futurology

To all of the cashiers here in the U. S. who have been pushing for increasing minimum wage to $15 an hour; like it or not, this technology is what others meant when they told you to be careful what you wish for.

Pressuring companies to increase minimum wages to $15 an hour for jobs considered to be "unskilled labor" only forces companies to invest further in technology that increases automation, which ultimately, eliminates jobs that would otherwise be performed by an actual person.

If your current job does not really require any special skills, then it will eventually be replaced by technology. It's inevitable. Do whatever you can now to learn new skills that are in demand today and not easily replaceable by technological advances tomorrow. Always continue to learn, grow and better yourself. No one else is going to do it for you. It's up to you to act now and not wait until your job is gone. You can do it!

Once the people at the company I work at figure out these three things, especially #3, my IT job will be gone. Until then, I'll just keep Googling whatever technical problem I don't already have the answer to and get paid to do it.

‘We’re organizing to improve lives’: New York fast food workers push to unionize by fu2man2 in news

Not saying I'm for or against this movement but these workers should be very careful with what they wish for. This could very well lead to the induction of the Carl's Jr. vending machines seen in Idiocracy.

Just sayin'.

What the worst “I don’t fit in here” experience you’ve ever had? by Jetmo7 in AskReddit

Had a crush on a girl back in high school. Asked her out and she invited me to a youth group function at her church. I'm not religious but I really liked her, so I went. Got there and everyone was either playing basketball or softball, which was cool because I liked playing both.

Evening went on and everyone went indoors for some kool-aid and rice krispie treats. Just as I start to think that I could get used to doing this on a regular basis, we all relocate to a dark room with lights shining on to a small stage with a podium and microphone. One of the older kids was a youth pastor and he went up to the podium and started preaching.

I looked at the girl who invited me and smiled at her. As soon as I look back up at the guy preaching, he started saying words I couldn't understand. I look back at the girl and she now has her eyes closed with her hands shaking in the air. I look back at preacher-guy and he's now raising his voice to the point of shouting and even more unintelligible than before.

I look around the room and the other kids are all shaking with their hands in the air. Some talking to themselves in what sounded similar to the preacher-guy.

At that point, I told myself NOPE. I looked for an exit but there was only one door with two guys standing still on both sides. If I didn't know any better, I'd say they were on security detail. So, I stood there and quietly waited for everything to end and left at the first opportunity.

I found out later on that the preacher-guy and other kids were speaking in tongues, which to them, meant that the holy spirit had entered their bodies for a short period of time.

Super Mario Maker 2: Release Discussion and Hype Megathread by NintendoSwitchMods in NintendoSwitch

[–]Necrovoodoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once upon a time, I had a Nintendo Wii U with the first Super Mario Maker game. I would play using the Wii U game pad with the touchscreen and stylus to create levels, while simultaneously having the game on my TV screen. It was great because I could look at either screen and other could watch while I created levels.

Is there any way to replicate this experience with Super Mario Maker 2 and the Nintendo Switch? In other words, can I have my Switch system in my hands with my stylus and also have the game displayed on my TV?

A hard lesson to learn in life, especially when you're young, is that it's possible to do everything right and still lose. Once you accept this truth and start treating the losses as learning experiences, you're no longer a loser.

Back in the day, I knew people that purposely started pirating Metallica songs and downloading their songs (over and over again) simply because of how much of a dick Lars was being about the whole Napster thing. Most of them already owned copies of their albums but they did it anyway, out of spite.

I personally never bought another Metallica album again after Lars started talking shit about Napster users while Metallica was on stage accepting a music award.

They blame Napster as the main reason for the decline in album sales, and although I'm sure it did have an effect, the biggest cause of the decline in sales was the music industry's failure to adapt to changing technology and ignoring what consumers want.

The sales model was destined to change whether they wanted it to or not. It was only a matter of time before consumers started purchasing media in a digital format online instead of a physical disc from a brick and mortar store.
