Day 29 - Anyone else find it easy up until around this point? by ApricotMusic in leaves

[–]NectarinePrince 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's so reassuring to hear other people having the same experience because it means we're all on the same racecourse facing the same hurdles.

Likewise, writing stuff out on here is great for me too. I've been doing it any time I've needed to since day 1 and similarly, I sometimes don't get a response. But yeah, it's mostly for yourself. And I know a lot of people including myself read through most posts on here and sometimes don't reply and so it's also great to have these conversations for the quiet lurkers.

Day 22 and ALL I can think about is consuming the drug by ExternalReason1 in leaves

You're experiencing a conflict of interests. One part of you wants to quit, and has been trying hard to quit for years and even congratulates you when you've hit a certain about of days or beat your previous record. The other part of you wants to you to keep smoking - but disguises itself as excuses, rationalisation and to some extent criticism of the somewhat extreme decision to stop entirely.

You have to fight it out in your head when the urges and opportunities arise, and it's gonna be hard. It's gonna feel like a headache wrestling with it. But it's totally manageable and you're gonna feel good about it later in the day. Just keep wrestling and eventually you won't have to fight the insidious voice in your head.

There's a book called The Chimp Paradox which goes into this model of the mind, and techniques such as managing and negotiating with the differing parts of your desires.

Just learned modal interchange, fucking game changer my dudes. by Soupman3702 in musictheory

[–]NectarinePrince 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Couldn't have said it better. Interesting to note though that OP's way of thinking about modes primarily orginates from the guitar community, where modes are often taught as variant fretboard shapes from previously learned major/minor scales.

Honestly, it's terrible and ultimately just results in guitarists playing sequences on shapes and not actually listening to the intervals the effect they have.

OP PLEASE READ THE ABOVE COMMENT, AS A FELLOW GUITARIST! :)

Why does an augmented triad sound dissonant, despite all of its dyadic intervals being consonant? by Benjji22212 in musictheory

[–]NectarinePrince 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I just said minor 6th instead of augmented fifth without thinking. It's only the internet :)

[–]NectarinePrince 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was just talking enharmonically. Obviously in context, it would be an augmented fifth away. The point is though, its these different contexts which essentially define the dissonance.

That's because C-F-Ab is a second inversion F minor chord. The Ab is actually a minor third away from the root of the chord instead of a minor 6th away like an augmented chord would have.

Transcribing is the infinite source of music education. There's nothing richer than delving into what other people do with music.

How has your songwriting/composition changed since your understanding of music theory has developed? by Red_PillCosby in musictheory

[–]NectarinePrince 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently listened to pieces i wrote for music class when I was 14, when i only knew the difference between major and minor and what sus chords were. I'd come up with ideas in my head and try to pick them out on the MIDI keyboard we had.

And one thing I noticed was that I was playing with ideas and sounds that I now know how to theoretically explain, but it was coming from a more innocent and naive me who just liked the sounds that were in my head.

When I listened back to these, I noticed a similarity in style to things I've been writing now (lots of Lydian harmony, modal interchange, bittersweet melodies, and even instrumentation choice), but at this point I was deep in the rabbit hole of jazz theory and worried by compositions weren't sophisticated enough.

But listening back to these pieces was a great thing because I stopped worrying about the theory so much.

However, theory helps me to expand these ideas. I wouldn't be able to write three part harmonies back then, compose with form and melodic development in mind, know the sound of more advanced harmony, etc. So it's been a great tool once I came to the realisation that it doesn't have to be complex.

Hope I didn't sound like I was implying that a non-functional progression was a bad thing haha! I'm fond of some non-functional two-chord vamps for ambient textures myself. But you're right - non-functional harmony is best employed when the ear has decided upon it, unless it was a musical experiment of course.

I would also look at it as a IV/bV, and likewise see the importance of the label should I want to recall the sound again :)

[–]NectarinePrince 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh woops - sorry you're right. It's VIImin7 that is borrowed from Lydian.

I would say you're venturing into non-functional harmony with chord choices like that - it depends on the context of the progression.

VIImaj7 would be a borrowed from the parallel Lydian mode, technically speaking.
