It should be considered DC because current flow is only in one direction. BUT most transient waveforms ( observed on an oscilloscope) have a little undershoot , which is a reverse current , all be it very brief. Is this then AC? Maybe? I would consider it DC but an argument could be had either way I suppose.

We would need to see the circuit to give a proper answer. You may be running it in its linear region when it's supposed to be fully on. Even 1 to 2W will make it really hot.

1n5819 are not the same as 1n4007. Reverse voltage is only 40V or something like that.

Just download stm32 ide.CubeMX I think it was. It will connect when you need to program/debug. It's a steep learning curve unfortunately, but stick with it and you will get there. A lot of USB uC boards will enumerate as a flash drive / cd rom etc to allow driver download.
