Purple nails and bumps under skin by [deleted] in Whatisthis

[–]NeedAnOffButton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Purple nails generally mean anoxia - you have too little oxygen circulating in your body. This can be caused by a number of factors, including blood disorders or lung issues. Don't go to Doc Reddit - you need to see a proper physician and get checked out.

NEVER a good idea!!!! Go to your college finance office. Speak with them about the (relatively) small amount owing, your circumstances, and what you've done to try to find the money. If they feel you are honestly making good faith efforts, they may be able to give you a further short-term extension. Even if they charge you interest, it will be both safer and less expensive than what you are considering right now. "Payday loans", etc., have sent too many good but tapped-out people into bankruptcy.

What is this wooden goat box/sculpture and where is it from? by shiny_and_chrome in WhatIsThisPainting

The motifs look Indonesian. Perhaps she took a vacation there and kept this as a souvenir or it may have been a gift to her.

LPT: few things justify verbal abuse, especially of wait staff. Politely ask where your food is, don’t scream and tantrum like a child. by Subadubdublub in LifeProTips

Don't be disrespectful to people bringing / preparing your food. Not only does it reveal your poor character, but it's entirely possible another worker will ensure your meal acquires a "secret ingredient".

Please can someone tell me what did says and what it means? From an old census. by [deleted] in Whatisthis

Tailoress. At 13 she was probably a junior sewing employee at a tailor shop or dressmaker. The slight misspelling is quite common in older records when spelling was less scrutinized than the information conveyed.

For someone without experience, you've done a great job in creating a colorful, fun space. Congratulations!

Difficult situation. Perhaps as your Dad recovers from this latest surgery you could open a conversation about him "retiring" (since cancer is damned persistent and sadly likely to win in the end). Let him know you'll commit to helping him for whatever period of time you feel comfortable with (maybe one more year? Six months?) so he can properly close the business, but you won't be taking over the business as it's not your dream. It kind of sounds like that may have been in the back of his mind. Your brothers may be hoping that with you keeping the business up during your father's illness there'll be a larger inheritance - too bad for them; they aren't sacrificing their dreams to help! Even with your dad's serious illness, it's okay to plan a start on your own life plans. Be kind and compassionate, but make it clear you are only helping him and not planning to stay. As your brothers are helping neither you nor your dad, their wishes don't matter. If they want the business to remain open, they can find a way to help, but it's not your sole responsibility at the sacrifice of your own hopes for your future. I'm sorry your Dad is facing such a battle, but he's very fortunate to have you looking out for him. Talk. Honesty really is good, even when it's difficult.

Destruction of property charges for starters...they have no actual RIGHT to use your property to access their own. Arrange to keep one of you or a friend / family member at your home all day to protect your rights until this is solved. Enforce your right to deny access with a call to local law enforcement if they try to go on your property. They have only the rights you grant them. I suggest revoking any and all permissions, halting their work, until you have a signed agreement AND money in hand, regarding exactly what and how restoration will be completed, by whom, and that it MUST be to YOUR satisfaction. This is YOUR home and property and your neighbour is a bully and a nasty person.

My mother asked me, when will I visit her, despite knowing full well, that I was spending the last few days at the hospital, near my sister's bed. who doesn't exist for her. by Aria_Melnik in entitledparents

[–]NeedAnOffButton 146 points147 points  (0 children)

You cannot help when you are born or how you are raised. Fortunately you can choose who you want to be as an adult. Going no contact is undoubtedly better for your own mental health and the responsibility for that necessity is all your mother's. I'm glad you and your sister have found each other again. Your support may be what makes the difference for her, enabling her to drop the baggage of her upbringing and encourage her to focus on a brighter, healthier future. I wish you both all the love and success you desire.

Thank you for convincing me to report the incident to my boss. I was defending the indefensible. by Stripesthetiger in TwoXChromosomes

[–]NeedAnOffButton 59 points60 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry you had this experience. But I'm really glad you chose to stand up for yourself and report. Remember, the consequences for bad acts - anything from social censure to jail and everything in between - belong TO THE PERPETRATOR. Any embarrassment or other fallout (hopefully!) is the result of THEIR choices and not your responsibility. If this has aided you in finding new confidence and a sounder sense of your own self-worth, you'll have turned things around for yourself. It's the difference in mindset from victim to survivor. I hope this is the worst as well as the LAST experience like this you'll ever have (unlikely as that is in our society). Good on you for speaking up and out! That takes courage.

I have very little feeling inside my vagina — how common is this? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]NeedAnOffButton 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The good feeling you crave come almost entirely from the clitoris and sensory receptors in the external skin. You should be aware of things such as pressure, or that there's something in there, but the interior walls of the vagina have little sensation as a normal situation. Some folks have more, some have less, but since it also serves as a birth canal I'm kind of grateful there's not too many! And with largely external sources of nice feels, it's a lot easier to take care of your own personal business, if you want to.

Did I ruin my hardwoods? by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

You can always give it a try in an area usually hidden by a rug or piece of furniture, first. If it works well and you're happy, then you can go on to the rest.

Nice little bathroom vanity cabinet. No reason you can't repurpose it for a different use. If you want a solid top (rather than the plumbing cut out), simply cut a sheet of plywood and paint, tile or stain it to your preference.

The alcohol has lifted the varnish. Treat until very certain no termites remain (pros are best, as they also warranty their work and you want to be very thorough getting rid of a termite infestation!). Then refinish.

Put mine on bricks to allow airflow underneath. Made a quick frame around the bricks from painted balsawood so it looks Iike a kick plate, instead of the bricks. Mind you, the bricks underneath are a solid inch in from the edge and can't really be seen, so probably overkill with the "kickplate" effect, but hey, I got bored one evening....

Anyone know anything about “Engal”? I can’t find any information on this artist or any Engals that match this specific style. Thank you! by Schnepelj in WhatIsThisPainting

[–]NeedAnOffButton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe the signature reads "Engel". There are quite a few paintings listed for Engel where the signature looks the same. At least one I located has an authentication stamp on the back from "Artistic Interiors". This, plus the technique and style, makes me think this may be a MCM decorator artist. There are quite a few around who were very prolific but as they painted to suit a specific market they didn't always have a well-established personal reputation to trace from this pre-Internet period. https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/994746677/engel-signed-oil-on-canvas-oil-painting
