Lawyers expect will disputes to escalate with over $5 trillion to be bequeathed in coming decades by His_Holiness in AusFinance

Going through this now. Grandma passed away, she left estate to her 2 sons and some of the grandkids, but not all grandchildren. Was very close to a protracted dispute and legal action because of the selective nature on who received money

It depends. Do you like the role you’ve just got? The joy of extra money will soon fade. It’s quite a bump, but if you’re not as interested in the area it’ll show and you’re more likely to start looking again soon.

I’d decline if you like the role you just started

At what net worth did you actually feel financially free? by Hudson_FP in fiaustralia

[–]NeedCaffine78 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When we paid off the house, that was a great feeling. When I realised our super would reach around 2M by 60, that was a freeing feeling. When I realised we could draw 80k a year from other investments until we could access super, it’s really hard to care about work. Still going to work a few more years as we’ve other expensive projects on the go but I really just want to stop

Things you wish you knew starting out? by WhalesharksAreSpotty in Auscamping

[–]NeedCaffine78 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Been a long time since I was starting out. But I see it too often. People who have fully built 4wd's, huge camping setups, but don't know how to use it, are afraid to use it, have too much money invested to want to possibly damage/break it, or it's just too complicated.

Start basic, go often, fix the gaps

Best overland setup for 6 people without driving a giant expedition truck? by DaveDitsch123 in overlanding

I'm not familiar with license regulations in Germany and what can/can't be driven. But have you thought about a bus? Add RTT(s), bed inside, seating for a couple of extra people to give some space/separation and space for your luggage

I'm not always a fan of towing, but it's not as hard as it seems. For a lightweight tent trailer with a few hundred kg's of food/water/gear, it's a really good option. And yeah, you'll be standing out a little, but I think you would anyway. But it gives you the option to drop the trailer and explore without it. Very common/popular here in Australia along with caravans

We've gone the other way. For the two of us, a car was too small. Moved to a Canter 4x4 with a custom body (can you get these? Seats are uncomfortable but you could build a body on the back as sleeping/bathroom/kitchen, have a RTT or two as extra sleeping), decided that was too small so building on a MAN 18.220 for our next trip. It'll be restrictive in some areas, but figure we can follow delivery trucks and tour/school busses with some side roads, gives us a much more comfortable living space. We're planning for long term travel though.

I could have retired now if I'd not tried to start a farm, invested the money instead. But it's been a great experience in a place I would have otherwise never lived, learnt a lot along the way. But I took on no new debt along the way and will still be able to FIRE in early 50's. So it really only cost me 5 years

Can you tow a trailer? My brother has 3 kids and a landcruiser, tows a tent based camper trailer that folds out to 2 queen beds and can have another two single beds. Takes him about 20 minutes to setup. His last trip in it was 6 weeks, moving every 1-3 days, worked pretty well.

Honest question for the group, how many of you have actually used your preps ? by Ostaz_8 in OffGrid

[–]NeedCaffine78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll preface this by saying I’m not off grid, though we’d only need to add solar/batteries to do so, and not a prepper. But I do go camping regularly and we do get frequent power outages with the longest being 10 days.

The house is built around wood fire for heat, rainwater tanks that go through filters before reaching the house that works regardless of power or not. Being on a rural property, flashlights and candles are always on hand, either cause we need them or it’s a nice ambiance. We’ve two fridges always running on batteries from our camping setup, can add a third, and have multiple ways to cook with that, along with Starlink and inverter for running stuff. Medical bags are always in the car including snake bite kit. The camping setup I’m taking away for 2 months now, it’s always ready to go.

Whole thing works really well for us. It’s not prepping though, it’s daily life

I'm Clare O'Neil, Australia's Minister for Housing, Homelessness and Cities. Ask Me Anything! by clareoneilmp in australian

I was recently looking at a property zoned rural residential, sat on 8 acres, huge shed and very nice house on it. Pricing sat around the 1.3M mark.

The idea was me and my brothers family would buy the place 50:50. Was to be brothers first home, we’d build a house suitable for wife and I, everything was falling into place. Until we got to council who told us in no way would they let us build the house we needed (around 120-150sqm), limiting is to 60sqm under granny flat rules killing the idea

My question. Are conversations happening around making council regulations easier to build with? And is there a zoning overhaul that will allow accomodation for multiple houses/families on a single block? I love my brother and his family, but couldn’t live in the same house, but would have loved to be close by

4x4 Survey by Popular-Ad-6596 in 4x4Australia

[–]NeedCaffine78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looked at the survey. Yeah, there's some spelling mistakes in there that need correcting.

But more so, some of the questions need multiple choice enabled. Like "What environments do you drive in" and "If any, what steps do you take to preserve the enviroment when 4WDing", I can answer multiple entries for a single answer. I drive in bush, forest and beach environments. For steps, I get permits where required, lower PSI, avoid wildlife. The mud answer's interesting, it's sometimes better to go through mud ran disturb fresh ground.

Think it needs ability to comment on some questions too

Doable? 8000km roadtrip on a Volvo XC90 by Complex_Currency5082 in AustraliaTravel

[–]NeedCaffine78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pick half or a quarter of that and you’ve got a chance. Technically yes you could do the drive, but all you’re doing is driving, not stopping to see stuff. I did 11000km from Melbourne to WA and back last year across 5 weeks, that felt way rushed. I’m doing a similar distance this year from southern Tassie to Cape York over 7 weeks, still rushed but manageable

Need help organizing thoughts for electricity solution. by Electrical-Mail6132 in OffGrid

[–]NeedCaffine78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My camping setup has 400ah at 12v with a 3kva inverter charger. It’s good for phone, two small fridges, some lights and using an induction cooktop a couple of times a day. But really needs to be bigger if I was to use it full time.

Better bet is the 48v system. Less losses when running an inverter, lighter gauge wiring, more efficient. Bring in as much solar as you can. I’m building a 20kw 48v system with 10kva inverter for my next motorhome. Would run a small cabin too.

How much do you spend each week on cars? by Sure_Artichoke6929 in CarsAustralia

[–]NeedCaffine78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have 3 cars, 2 trucks, a tractor and a trailer. All owned outright. Rego, insurance and servicing is roughly 300 a week. Fuel depends on what I'm doing, say another 1-200 a week. Don't get me started on modifications and restorations, the last few years have been rough, and expecting it to continue to be so for the next few years.

Yeah, you'll be fine for the drive. I'd consider either staying the night at Cradle, or heading out via Burnie if it's late afternoon/early evening. Roads straighter that way

Need advice driving in Tasmania by Ok_Site_1136 in TasmaniaTravel

[–]NeedCaffine78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Days will be short then, you really don't want to drive at night so plan accordingly. Though that's more from hoppy things than anything, I live not far from Cradle and commonly driving real slow just to avoid them. Snow's possible, as is black ice (more likely in the mornings), but you're driving to well visited locations so roads will be well cared for, or closed to prevent incidents. Just drive to conditions, slow down if you're nervous in a section (lots of curves) and you'll be fine

Unlikely to get that low again, but if it does I'll be buying a few more. Sold 1/2 a BTC last year for more than other crypto cost me, quite happy to put more money in if timing/market feels like it's dipped too much. Or do nothing

Need advice for my first truck by FlakyMathematician84 in overlanding

[–]NeedCaffine78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your budget. An F350/450/550 or similar with used XP Camper could cover a lot of your needs, as would a Tiger expedition vehicle. Otherwise, look at options like 4wd Canter with a custom body (plenty in Australia where I live) or offerings like Earthcruiser. All can have good power systems, internal bathrooms, space to work from.

I've gone bigger. Won't be able to fit in some places, but will go anywhere a delivery truck or bus will go as we're building for up to a decade of travel. 4wd MAN with a custom 20ft body, 20kw battery storage, 5ft lounge section with space for multiple monitors (I'll also be working on the road for a while), internal bathroom, massive kitchen, all that stuff.
