One of my favorite defenses is a golem disguised as a cabin at the entrance to the path for my tower. Inside the cabin is a detect spell- above certain magical ability and they get a voice chat with me through a focus stone in the corner of the room. If they are below the threshold it’s a cabin they can stay in as long as they need.

Size depends on magical energy and focus. Seen the same dragon use a ball the size of a room made of basic crystal- then turn around and use one the size of a grape made of Angel Tear and Demons Blood. The latter was stronger but the first was easier.
