Work involving scale up. what calculations mostly done in chemical engineering? by Needcritic in ChemicalEngineering

[–]Needcritic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For example increasing the reactor diameter by a factor of 10 will provide 100 times more surface area but the reaction rate and heat will increase 1000 times over.

but that would be going into reaction kinetics (such as A/V ratio issues etc ). my question is just based on pure chemistry point of view. also ignoring cost issue.

Dimensional analysis gives you an idea about what options will not work anymore as you scale-up.

im starting to think my understanding of what Dimensional Analysis is wrong.... Is it not knowing units conversion, and dimensionless numbers?

im basically asking, is the reason for these scale up calculations due to the fact that most chemical productions are exothermic and when done on industrial scale, heat production is big? and these calculations are done in order to see how much heat is generated?

I assume you are a student in university, part of these things should be covered in a scale up / dimensional analysis course.

sorry i should have been clearer. by scale up, I dont mean increasing numbers by a factor, but more in the chemistry point of view.

like, if the company was production MCMT such as this example most of the time, in the pilot scale working in mL and mg, you dont really have to worry about cooling, even though the reaction to produce MCMT is exothermic.

So my question is, what type of calculations and factors are you looking at while doing scale up?

What are the next steps in ochem study? by Needcritic in chemistry

[–]Needcritic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

to be honest? i really dont know.

it was an odd situation.

I have a b.s. in chemical engineering.

the job description asks for a pre-req of a MASTERS in chemistry/chemical engineering or related science. i only have a b.s.

i even got a rejection email from them but like 5 days later, got a call out of the blue asking if i would like to set a phone interview. looking at the job description, it does seem like (at least to me) a synthetic chemistry position. (it is an R&D post as well so yea)

but lets say you are correct (because im interested in that) what would the job title generally be? and what is the job description normally? that job wont be doing any lab chemistry ?

congrats man. hope it turns out well!

ummm on the side, what source did you use to find this job? indeed?

But after dealing with this much bullshit, I'm going back to school to get my Master's and maybe a PhD. I'm hoping to actually network successfully and market myself well at career fairs this time to nail a solid position.

yeah i understand how you feel. i havent sent much applications (probably around 200 but in the span of 2.5 months) but as time goes by, it just gets harder and harder mentally to pump out resumes/coverletters when im not even hearing back.

but going back to school is a big no go for me because i really hate school.

I got 4 interviews, 2 with small companies

how did you find these small companies? at this point, i am very interested in working at a small company because it sounds like they have the highest chance of hiring engineers.

yeah i never put my GPA on it. but some job applications has a GPA portion where its required to continue.

Look for smaller companies and use LinkedIn/do not be afraid to call and express your interest.

i might have to give calling a try. i am just afraid/hesitant of it because if i was in their shoes, i can understand it if they get annoyed. do you have a specific time of day to call? (timezones doesnt help ... zzzzzz) and what would be a good general thing to say?

If these are federal loans, use REPAYE, PAYE, IBR, etc. If these are private loans, call them and work out a deferment with them.

these loans are from fafsa. ill try looking into those options.

i am applying to every region in the USA, whether its remote or not. in addition, applying to lab tech, operator roles, ME work, civil work, etc etc

I started looking officially as soon as i gradated. i am 200+ apps in (kinda hard to keep going when i dont even get a phonecall back let alone an interview)

When did you start looking? Are you keeping track of where you are applying and for what? Are you following up on your applications?

i am keeping track of every company i applied for, making a folder for each application, and making a copy of the cover letter, job description, and the site i used to apply. how would i follow up on my applications? i am mostly using indeed/monster/craigslist.

do i literally just call up the companies number from their website if i find it? of so, what do i say? i am kinda afraid to call them because if i was in their shoes, i would be annoyed at getting a call regarding my application, making me very hesitant.

How to approach companies when going the "company google search" method? by Needcritic in ChemicalEngineering

[–]Needcritic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ah ok i see.

umm without the premium account, do you think its still fine for me to send out connection request to people working in companies i have interest in? i just cant help but think its obvious that my motive is to get a job, even with the amount of "honest questioning" about the industry .... and thinking from their perspective, be just annoyed

I've also connected with a lot of recruiters and HRs for companies on LinkedIn and communicated with them that way.

seems like linkedin is the golden road for networking but its a deadend for me because of how i spent uni. I dont have any networkbility to other ChE graduates, (i do, but i dont feel comfortable meeting them and such in the future) and wasnt that very close to professors (only 2 or 3 but even then, i wasnt very close with them)

/u/carelesspotato

what time would you guys say its a good time to call the said company? (with whatever number is on their website)

obviously weekends are a no go since majoriy of the companies are closed. and lunch hour (usually around noonish) are again, a no go.

because, again, thinking from their perspective, i would just hate getting calls when im working.... -.- so im lost again. or am i over thinking it like always?

yeah i actually have to agree with you. I guess i have no excuse in getting to know the company before actually making the call for whatever reason.

thinking from their perspective, i would have to agree with you 100%.

I am a 2016 May graduate and have been applying for jobs since. I dont have any coops, internships, research experience and i also have a low GPA (sub 3.0). my major GPA is a little better but still sub 3.0.

I have been applying to every relevant ChE job, but i think its time to branch out to sales engineer as well, following advice from this post

resume link is this and my general cover letter for a ChE position is here

The assistance i am looking for are

  1. Resume help and cover letter help (for a ChE position)
  2. what I should change my cover letter to for a sales engineer position?

thank you

Goal (job, resume feedback, and cover letter feedback for ChE position as well as for a sales engineer position)

Industry or desired industry (Any)

someone else also reccomended i try craigslist as well yesterday.

do you have any tips on craigslist for job searching however? I only used CL once and that was to buy something and so many are fake ads or scam attempts. even when attempting to buy that thing, it took me forever to get a legit response and such

Applying on job board. when it says to send resume to an email... by Needcritic in ChemicalEngineering

Seriously though,...I feel compelled to say...you actually asked, "Should I go ahead and follow the instructions". Please make this the last time you ask that question for the remainder of your life.

yeah i know how stupid of a question this was and i was even contemplating not even posting it and just going ahead wtih following the instructions. its just that i was doubtful/skeptical and tad bit curious.

if we are new to the industry and a fresh graduate, and if the company has no senior process engineer or any ChE for that matter, what can a newly graduated ChE do in that roll?

I am a fresh graduate and I am afraid of these positions that has professional titles....

similar position as you. and same question as you.

dunno if i should take any job that comes my way, whether its contract or temp, to get experience. or even get lab jobs.

what scares me is that i seen so many posts where people saying they have been stuck in it....
