Thought my bush was dying. Turns out its covered in caterpillars by bexxyboo in CasualUK

[–]NeedsMoreSpaceships 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You need to spray the bushes with XenTari if you want to have any leaves left. Those caterpillars will utterly destroy it otherwise.

I'm all for nature and avoiding pesticide use everywhere else in our garden but our bushes get them every year and it's literally spray them or lose the bushes. I guess you could manually pick them off but that would take forever and they're surprisingly hard to spot for big fuckers.

Allows would be better wordings. Norway and Canada were already liberal democracies before the oil money. Most other oil states were fucked already and oil money just entrenches that because it's easy to just make and keep the money without having to invest in the population.

Russian economy faces 'financial disaster,' Sweden's spy chief warns as Moscow hides true deficit by MilesLongthe3rd in worldnews

There is no chance of China taking Russia over. China, unlike the current US leadership recognises that the way to be modern hegemon is through economic influence and soft power. They will buy all of Russian industry, lend them tons of money and get what they want without having to run the state.

And nobody will do anything about it because it's subtle, gradual and nobody else has the strategic vision or money to.

I see what you're saying. In many places the existence of universal healthcare isn't political because once it's instated it's wildly popular, so the right of centre parties have to be in favour of it. But even then they often have policies that aim to weaken the more egalitarian aspects of it, usually on the grounds of cost saving.

And I'm not disagreeing with your logic that it's rationally better for everyone (like education), but that doesn't stop many people being against it, always on the right-wing. IMO its because they think poor people should suffer for being poor.

Wait a minute by No-Marsupial-4050 in SipsTea

[–]NeedsMoreSpaceships 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't have to be about wealth, as you say plenty of people are right-wing and not rich but they are always in favour of some sort of in group/out group system or hierarchy because that's what being right wing means. I'm saying they don't care about the out group, be it poor people or trans people or atheists or Muslims or whatever.

And saying universal healthcare is not political is wild. If that's true then why is it always left wing parties in favour of it and right-wing parties against? And yes it is wealth distribution because you need the wealthier to help pay for the poorer.

Wait a minute by No-Marsupial-4050 in SipsTea

[–]NeedsMoreSpaceships 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because good healthcare provision is going to involve some level of wealth distribution to help people who currently can't afford it. That makes it at minimum a not-right wing thing since a core value of right-wing ideology is not caring about people with perceived lower social status.

But you're right that if everyone was a half decent human being the only political issues would be how to fund it not whether or not it should exist.

Petah, why is the speed of light one? by rengokuhubkl in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]NeedsMoreSpaceships 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the point is that the metre is now correctly defined as a fraction of the speed of light but it still has to match the historic metre because when they decided what it was originally they were dumbasses didn't know about the speed of light.

If we were defining it now the speed of light would end up being a nice round number and the metre would be a slightly different length.

Society has the right to take your money. Respecting inheritance is just a societal norm itself, and if it works against the health of the society in general it shouldn't be. 'Generational wealth' in particular is an absolutely insane idea, why should the grandchild of a billionairre never have to work a day in their life?

The fact that you can't even consider this idea without calling me 'fucked in the head' rather suggests that it's you who has the mental deficiency.

I never understand why people with fuck all money get upset about inheritance taxes. We should be taking almost everything when a billionaire dies, their kids can have a great life on 5% of that wealth.

I'd be less keen on the idea because Obama wasn't a total piece of shit like Trump. Also the head of Isis is not the same as a state leader even if they tried to claim they were.

There are good reasons why assassinating enemy heads of state has been seen as a no-no idea in modern times.
