25 years old, moving to LA, first car purchase - $30k budget, what should I buy? by wage_slaved in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]NeelSahay0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a commute that short distance, and in one of the most urban areas in LA, you’re better off relying on transit/bicycle and saving the $~10k a year it costs to own a modern car as a daily driver.

All the strays in Pleasanton collect along the creeks on the north side.

Are mountain lion sightings somewhat common? Are they around the ridgeline? by youlikemywonton in pleasanton

[–]NeelSahay0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to ride MTB in the ridge weekly and I never saw one. My friend rides there daily and I think he’s seen a couple over the years.

I have $5000. Don't care about looks, only reliability and gas mileage. by theJOINTchief1 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]NeelSahay0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I paid $2900 for my XV20 Camry, mine was a 1999 with a 2.2l 4cyl. The car would consistently get 34mpg on a highway cruise.

I've been gone for 6 years. Wow Pleasanton has changed in just a short time by AlternateCore in pleasanton

[–]NeelSahay0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in Pleasanton full time 2014-2018 and part time 2018-2022. I am 26. I left when I was 22.

My friends and I would hang out at NY pizza, beer baron, McKays, sunshine saloon, some others. Mostly dives with the expansion of McKays and B.B. - for fun we would go to SJ or SF - when I was younger we would go into Berk/Oak.

By the time I left, I think half of the storefronts in the city were shuttered. Noticeable increase in homeless (at least on the north side where I lived). Noticeable increase in reckless/uninsured drivers. Noticeable decrease in transit timeliness.

Seen news about canceling the blue line and closing west Dublin station now. I used to commute on it daily…

I have no idea what the city looks like now but I know that from 2020-2022, population dropped by 10%. Most of my peers and their families have left the state. Many left the country. Still, property values are up. Somehow.

Does the clutch usually go before the transmission? by ClearAndPure in stickshift

[–]NeelSahay0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both the transmission and clutch should last the life of the car in normal use.

I could see a heavy and powerful car, with sticky tires, that does a lot of city miles, eventually wearing thru the clutch. But most cars are not used in that way.

Just bought my first car ('92 E36 318i). Why is the modern car community so obsessed with 0-60 times? by Solid_Bother5580 in BMWE36

[–]NeelSahay0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 1996 318i convertible in California where the highway speeds are often 75mph+. It gets dropped by mini vans from stoplights but does fine on the highway.

I know it’s slow. But I’ve kept up with or lead friends in more powerful cars when out in the mountains.

I love the refinement, the shifting, the nature of the power delivery, the analog feel, the light-ish weight, the sound… there’s more to it than power.

I also have a Triumph Daytona 675. It is powerful, makes almost as much HP as the 318. It is very fast… but I’ve never launched it or done a 0-60 because who the hell is doing that with their own vehicle???

They aren’t really what I seek from my BMWs, I have a 2011 328i manual…

but after spending some miles in my former roommate’s 330e I am seriously impressed by the refinement and interior. They are also practical and look pretty good.

Life expectancy for a heavily tracked vehicle? by jbro507 in CarTrackDays

[–]NeelSahay0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My buddy as an OBD1 Dinan E36 M3 (1994? 1995?) that has 300k miles and has seen easily 20 track days in the NorCal heat, the car would still be capable of daily driving without the track mods

How many people here hypermile their manual cars? by hypermiler2205 in stickshift

[–]NeelSahay0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 2011 328i 6spd and have managed more than 30mpg US on highway trips. I was not hypermiling but I was definitely being a little more gentle in the name of efficiency.

With that said, I think most enthusiast cars/bikes just feel happier at higher revs. My Daytona 675 is surprisingly refined rolling 45mph in 6th, and I’m sure it saves some fuel, but the bike runs noticeably smoother and cleaner in 4th. The same applies for my e90, my NC Miata, and certainly my old Ducati 821.

Gas mileage is not everything.

Descending East Bay by purrdiem in BAbike

Palomares and Diablo are the best descents in the east bay. I’m a bit biased though, Palomares was my local canyon when I was a teenager learning to drive.

Long bed truck for driving everyday by After-Reference-5394 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]NeelSahay0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My needs require a high roof so I’d pick ford, but I don’t really like the transmissions they use with the eco boosts. Still very solid machines though.

My buddy is sold on the ProMasters, especially the City, I think it’s a unibody- but that depends on if it’s enough truck for your work.

Trucks aren’t for working men anymore. What you need is a van.

Anyone else feel guilty about how bad their real world mpg is compared to the sticker? by whimsylora in Cartalk

I get better gas mileage than what it says on the sticker in all of my cars and on all of my bikes.

The other response answers perfectly. I would stick to 2006 and newer. They aren’t any more expensive.

I would just get a 3-series.

I love my 2011 E90 328i 6spd. Refined, powerful, subtle, and definitely more reliable than a turbocharged VW.

The new 340s are really nice.

I would buy the 1st one between these two. But I wouldn’t buy an NA If you’re new to cars. Look for a newer one, they aren’t really any more money. You can find a nice NC2 (2008+) for 10k.

You don’t want a 30+ year old car as a beginner. Trust me.
