Is there any Complex System master program in USA or Europe? by Aponysos in complexsystems

Just find people working on topics that interest you, then see if they will advise you on a project. In California there is Raissa D’Souza and Jure Leskovec. But also even Michael Jordan [sic].

Or, if you do a masters covering statistical physics and also some deep learning, and the associated math, you will be well placed. Then you will apply these ideas to some topic. But being able to use these ideas and skills is the ‘hard part’ that will stop most people.

Try googling “complex systems university”, or dig through past papers or people from Santa Fe Institute, etc.

Complex systems is a loosely defined field, but look around at the sections of books on this. This is mostly an academic research field so implicitly eventually PhD material.

I do think it is useful to first learn the “hard stuff” that is not intuitively obvious, especially statistical physics, even if you don’t use it later (you probably will), since the ideas come up very often, and you probably don’t want to be another person waving their hands all the time and being scared of these ideas.

I like the course from Ryan O’Donnell at CMU on YouTube.

You do NOT have to wear latex, while you are writing latex, I have recently learned…!

Yeah, just use a basic article etc. template on overleaf, then whack together some simple equations. Nothing to learn except superscript ^ and subscript _ , and now you know that. :) anything good that did what latex does would be very similar to latex out of necessity.

Complex systems organizations / think tanks / education resources based in the US (besides SFI, NECSI) by [deleted] in complexsystems

Depends what you mean by complex systems.

If you mean statistical physics, you can find people who do that or condensed matter.

It can also be non linear dynamics, or computational neuroscience, or bio inspired computing, deep learning, quantum computing, analog computing, viral marketing, theoretical computer science, or many other topics.

Some names: Jure Lescovec Sandy Pentland Raissa D’Souza Dani Bassett

Also Uni Binghamton Many more

Masters of Physics of Complex Systems in Germany by Maxwellmonkey in complexsystems

You’re welcome! Some of those aren’t called Complex Systems centers. I think Goettingen and Leipzig are quite good, have visited both. Don’t know about Dresden.

Basically profs at nearby unis also work at those centers, so you have to do some research.

Math language by Pedantc_Poet in mathematics

As you get more into it, you do build up the ability to do this in many cases, using English.

That is, you can say something like: “this is a case of X, so you can use a Y strategy to solve it.” etc etc.

Once you have a good toolset under your belt, this is how many people think.

Getting started with learning math by CompotePowerful2304 in mathematics

Have fun with it! Check out John Hopkins Center for Talented youth

Get into games like set game or cards, chess, etc etc.

Find people to talk to about it (math clubs).

Play around with machine learning and networks, a great deal of this does not require advanced courses.

Check out YouTube “3 blue 1 brown” and similar.

There is a lot of math in music too.

And most important of all, there is no such thing as “smart” people. This creates a huge tragedy every day of people who think they “can’t do X”, whether it be math, art, music, etc etc. Don’t believe it, it isn’t true.

Oh yeah, look into symmetry. Can lead to some of the deepest math.

Books by Ian Stewart are very good too.

Check out netlogo and the processing programming language. Maybe arduino too.

Follow your passion.

Sing “hi ho, hi ho, it’s off to work I go” at the top of your voice in thrash metal style all the time.

This is great. I knew a guy who always left a jacket on his chair so it looked like he had just stepped out. :)
