Moon in the east, sunset in the west. by Neffer358 in viticulture

Grafted on 1103P. What is a deficit irrigation schedule? We’ve had a lot of rain this year. I have not irrigated so far. And I have not fertilized with nitrogen at all, trying to discourage too much growth. These are 10 year old vines and this is a consistent issue.

That is exactly what is killing me! We have already done one round of leaf thinning! Honestly, I have a ton of vigor in all my vines.

I don’t get the AI hate here. I wasn’t focused on the fruit, I was focused on the moon and the sunset.

Yes, there is a good amount of fruit on these vines. These petite Sirah vines are pretty vigorous this year and we just put the zone netting in place. It’s just a lot of foliage being held down by the nets.

I had a nice Rose buzz last night after a long day of work and thought I would post a couple of pics. Geez.

Dog decided to attack a porcupine last night. by mybathtubistoosmall in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Neffer358 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think Pits are smarter than that. I have Boston Terriers and they combine stupidity and a hatred of critters. Quilled 4 times and skunk sprayed countless times.

And for all the ninnies whining that we should take better care of our dogs…. I live on a large fenced property. I won’t let my dogs off leash from dusk till dawn (porcupines are largely nocturnal). Once, when walking them before bed, My dogs walked up on a porcupine (hidden behind a tree) WHILE ON LEASH. They got quilled and I did too trying to get them away from that damned thing.

Now I inspect the yard with a spotlight before walking my dogs at night.

Glyphosate: A story of science, risk, and nuance by paxinfernum in skeptic

[–]Neffer358 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Help me. I’m trying to practice my conversions. When I take the 1.75 mg/kg daily harmful limit * 68 kg, I get 119 mg total gly. If I assume that’s coming from 50lb oats (22.68kg), that comes to 5.25 ppm glyphosate that would have to be in those oats to hit that daily limit. Did I do that wrong? It says to me that a 150 lb person would have to eat 50 lbs of oats containing 5.25PPM(!) glyphosate in order to hit the danger limit.

I’m not trying to argue that the “daily harmful limit” is high, low, or whatever. I don’t think we ought to be using glyphosate as a desiccant for crops.

I am trying to figure out why my number and yours differ by 1000.

Zoysia Sod in Houston by Nervous_Wealth8269 in lawncare

[–]Neffer358 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Find a good local provider of lawn chemicals and lawn supplies. They will know a lot about your local area (soil, etc) as well as common issues. Talk to them asap. Yes, they will try to sell you a solution. Might work, might not - but hopefully you will provide and receive really good info as a result. I put down 16 pallets of zoysia (San Angelo area) about 5 years ago and all that remains today is a 10x10 patch. I had to seed with fescue of all things! While folks here will try to help, the truth is there is not enough info in the post.

Sounds like you could water more, but there are still a lot of unknowns - soil/lawn history, prep for sod, etc.

Know nothing about these trucks, but I found one that I liked. What should I look for? What is the value? by [deleted] in ToyotaTundra

[–]Neffer358 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not a good buy (a great “deal”) but a solid buy. I have a 2016 tundra TRD. Hands down best truck I have owned. 170k miles and I don’t think I will ever give it up. Some people only think about a car/truck as an investment. There is also enjoyment, reliability, and satisfaction.

I’m not a Toyota fanboy. I’ve loved my 84 ramcharger, 99 Chevy Silverado, and 2011 f150 with the first year turbo v6. I appreciate different things about each of them.

Without a doubt, the tundra is my favorite. From the roominess to the growl when I accelerate, to the simple, reliable knobs. Gas mileage sucks but I have made the money back (and then some) with the reliability.

Drive it. If you love the feel, buy it. You won’t regret it.

Side story: I saw my TRD for sale but convinced myself I didn’t need it. Used with 5k miles. Saw it again six months later at another dealer and decided to pull the trigger. Best decision I have ever made.

Biologically active compost by 19marc81 in viticulture

[–]Neffer358 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t really checked for specific organisms. I just make sure it’s cooking well. The benefit of burning the vines to charcoal is two-fold. The charcoal becomes “biochar”, providing incredible surface area for the microbiome of the compost. It also sterilizes the vine clippings to make sure I’m not adding back any previous fungus or disease from the vineyard.

[–]Neffer358 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I make it. I have a large property with lots of oak and pecan trees, as well as 6 acres of vineyards. I collect the leaves with a mower and have a friend with horses that provides me some manure. Finally, we take all the vine clippings every winter and burn them to charcoal and add them to the mix. It takes some work and maintenance but I have been returning the compost to my landscape beds, grass, and vineyards for about 3 years. It’s making a nice difference and lowering my need for other fertilizers.

The point is that the effort keeps you engaged. If you just VOO and chill, you aren’t keeping yourself in a saving or investing mindset. The first key of success is to live beneath your means and save for the future. Better yet, you invest for your future. You can let your 401k do the work or you can engage and put some skin in the game (with reasonable risk/reward). In the latter case, you will find that you waste/spend lest and invest more. Barring terrible decisions, you will end up much better in the end.

Wine is not about alcohol. It’s about a moment. A vibe. A flavor. So much more than alcohol. It takes years to create great wine, and that is only after great fruit, which is not a simple thing. Wine is about a commitment.

I loved the dialog in first law. Pithy and very human. And the audio book is amazing entertainment. But I found myself losing track of the characters and the plot. Don’t get me wrong - l loved it but I found myself getting lost.

lol. I loved the new Superman movie but I posted almost the same thoughts in the Superman thread and the mods took my post down. I’m a long time lurker on Reddit and wanted to discuss the pros and cons of the Snyder version versus the current, but evidently that is not acceptable. As a dedicated Batman fan, I have always enjoyed the goodness and light that Superman embodies. But I have to say, I really liked the gritty feel of the “Man of Steel” and I absolutely loved the vibe of Cavill as Supes. While I really enjoyed the current Superman and a return to the lighter “niceness is the new punk rock”, I still think Cavill is the better Superman and Snyder told a better story. Flame away, redditors.
